You know that awkward question after a meal in Gangnam? You want coffee, but not somewhere too loud, and you don't want to settle for mediocre desserts either T_T This time I went to Something About Coffee (썸띵어바웃커피). The dessert display looked so pretty in photos that I had high hopes, and in person I thought, "Ah, now I get why this place is famous."

If you're looking for a café near Sinnonhyeon Station, it's a pretty satisfying pick, and it's easy to reach from Gangnam Station too, so it's worth adding to your Gangnam Station café list. I went on a Thursday at 3 PM. I'd heard there's a wait on weekends, but on a weekday afternoon the mood was much more relaxed. Good for talking, good for photos, and choosing desserts is half the fun haha

What does the exterior of Something About Coffee look like?

The exterior is a white-toned building with big windows and a little terrace area at the front, so it feels like a café on a European side street. Even in the middle of Gangnam, it doesn't have a flashy franchise feel; it feels like you've found a slightly hidden pretty café, so the first impression was great.

I walked in going "Is this the right place?", and the menu board, plants and brick floor at the entrance go together surprisingly well. If you like this kind of vibe among Sinnonhyeon Station cafés, you'll probably have your camera out right at the door. In short: the exterior is clean and pretty, and you'll definitely take at least one photo.

When should you go to Something About Coffee to avoid a wait?

Something About Coffee is known for being quite crowded on weekends, but when I visited on Thursday at 3 PM it was quieter than expected. If you hate weekend waits, I'd recommend a weekday afternoon.

Inside Something About Coffee on Thursday at 3 PM

Of course it wasn't totally empty. There were enough customers to keep the café lively, but it wasn't chaotic and I didn't have to worry about finding a seat. This time slot was just right: good for after-lunch tea time, and there were still a fair number of desserts left to choose from.

Many Gangnam Station cafés are packed even on weekdays, but this day I was lucky to sit comfortably and chat. In short: Thursday 3 PM was a success. If you want to enjoy it at a relaxed pace, weekday daytime is the answer.

What are the interior and seating like at Something About Coffee?

The interior is bigger than I expected, and the table layout doesn't feel cramped. It mixes white, wood and slightly vintage touches, so photos tend to turn out well.

Some areas look like they have high ceilings, and there are seats by the windows where light comes in, so it works for chatting with friends and would be fine as a date spot too. It isn't so quiet that you feel awkward talking, and the music isn't so loud that you can't hear each other, so it was just comfortable.

Personally, the most important thing when I look for a Gangnam Station café is the atmosphere of the seating, and Something About Coffee felt easy to sit in for a long time. In short: the interior is emotional and clean. If you like taking photos, you'll probably be happy here.

What desserts are in the dessert display at Something About Coffee?

The dessert display had a wide variety: baked goods, cookies, cakes and small desserts. Cakes with mango, strawberry and cream lined the showcase, and it was hard to pick just one.

It gets a little dangerous from here haha The dessert display was filled so beautifully, and it didn't feel like "desserts made carelessly"; each one was nicely shaped. The cakes especially had such pretty colors that my eyes reacted first. I could see why this place comes up as a go-to for desserts among Sinnonhyeon Station cafés.

That day I chose the mango fresh cream cake and the chewy cookie, but other things kept catching my eye, so I figured I'd have to come back. In short: lots of dessert choices and they look pretty. If you love sweets, it's hard to walk past.

How do the Americano and matcha cream choco latte taste?

What I ordered at Something About Coffee that day was an Americano, a matcha cream choco latte, a mango fresh cream cake and a chewy cookie. The Americano was good as a pairing for desserts, and the matcha cream choco latte was sweet and rich.

Ordered Americano, matcha cream choco latte and desserts

The Americano had a clean taste, just right with desserts. The acidity doesn't stand out too much; it's nutty and balanced, so a sip after a bite of sweet cake tidies up your mouth.

The matcha cream choco latte looked pretty first of all, and the taste was quite strong too. The bitterness of the matcha cream hits first, then the sweetness of the choco latte underneath follows, so matcha lovers will probably like it. But if you don't like sweet drinks, you might want to share it with the Americano. Eating it with desserts made it a bit of a sweet party for me, but that's the point of going to a café, right haha

Is the mango fresh cream cake very sweet?

The mango fresh cream cake has soft, light whipped cream, so it wasn't as heavy as I expected. The mango was sweet and fresh and went well with the cream, and it's a cake I'd eat again.

The yellow mango color was lovely right away. It photographs brightly, and the moment it's on the table it puts you in a good mood. When whipped cream is too sweet or greasy, you get tired of it after a few bites, but this one wasn't like that. There's mango between the sponge layers, so there's a bit of texture to chew too, which I liked.

Personally, I get upset when a fruit cake skimps on fruit, but here you could still feel the mango. It's surprisingly hard to be satisfied with the dessert at a Gangnam Station café, but I'd eat this cake again. In short: the mango fresh cream cake is a soft, fresh, seasonal-feeling dessert. It tasted even better with coffee.

The chewy cookie's highlight is the texture: slightly crisp outside, dense and chewy inside. It's on the sweet side, so with an Americano it balances out perfectly.

Chewy cookie at Something About Coffee

On its own the cookie might taste a little sweet, but after a sip of coffee you want to reach for it again. If you like baked goods, don't just look at the cakes and walk past; check out the cookies too. The desserts placed on the tables, not just in the showcase, were also displayed prettily, so it was fun to look around.

Personally, I thought the chewy cookie would be fine to take away. It feels like it would taste good with coffee at home too. In short: the chewy cookie is recommended for people who like a dense texture. It's even better with an Americano.

Why I recommend Something About Coffee as a Sinnonhyeon Station café

Something About Coffee was a Sinnonhyeon Station café that's well balanced overall: exterior, interior mood, dessert display and drink pairings. It wasn't good only because the desserts are pretty.

There are so many Gangnam Station cafés, but when you actually go, some are too crowded, some have disappointing desserts, and some look pretty in photos but taste so-so, right? At least on a weekday afternoon, Something About Coffee was comfortable to sit and eat in, and the drink and cake pairing was satisfying enough that I thought about coming back. It suits dates, meeting friends and after-meal café stops especially well. If you're looking for a pretty café in Gangnam, it's worth saving.
