Gangnam beef BBQ: sirloin topped with grilled pollock roe, Matbaegogi

I visited Matbaegogi (맛배고기), a beef restaurant near Nonhyeon Station in Gangnam with free corkage and even private rooms. If you're looking for a BBQ place around Nonhyeon Station in Gangnam, this is one I'd recommend, so have a look!

Matbaegogi location, hours and practical info

Matbaegogi is at 35 Hakdong-ro 2-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the 1st and 2nd floors. It's open daily 11:00–22:00 with last order at 21:00, and on weekdays there's a break time from 15:00 to 17:00.

Group visits, reservations, takeout and Wi-Fi are all available, and both corkage and parking are free.

You can walk to Matbaegogi from Exit 3 of Nonhyeon Station in under 2 minutes, and parking is free too.

What is the atmosphere like at Matbaegogi? Are there private rooms?

The inside feels less like an ordinary BBQ joint and more like a stylish Korean dining restaurant! The seating was varied, and I liked that it was quiet and relaxed rather than the busy, chaotic vibe BBQ places usually have.

There are also private rooms for a bit more privacy, so it seems like a good fit for a family meal, a company dinner, or any time you need a more private table.

The restrooms are inside the restaurant, separate for men and women, and they were kept clean haha

Matbaegogi menu and free corkage

The menu runs from grilled meat and set menus to sides, alcohol, whisky and other liquor (yangju), and drinks, and corkage is free, which makes it easy to use.

There are also dishes that go well with the meat, like yukhoe (seasoned raw beef), naengmyeon (cold noodles) and doenjang-jjigae, plus lunch menus for office workers. I introduced the full menu in a video in the original post!

Matbaegogi side dishes: salad, pollock roe and doenjang-jjigae

The side dishes that come with the meal include salad, tofu, sauces and kimchi, all good with beef, and you also get pollock roe (myeongran) to grill alongside the meat and a doenjang-jjigae as standard.

The vegetable and tofu salad was delicious! It's a nice light start before the meat~

Yukhoe bibim noodles served with the Matbae Special for two

I ordered the Matbae Special for two, and it comes with these yukhoe bibim noodles (spicy mixed noodles topped with raw beef)! They look delicious already,,

Break the yolk and mix it all together. The tangy, spicy flavor really wakes up your appetite;;

Chewy noodles with tender yukhoe, the texture combination was absolutely the best

What's in the Matbae Special set for two (300g)

The Matbae Special set for two is 300g in total of sirloin, scored chuck flap and rib finger, and it comes with vegetables too.

At Matbaegogi the staff grill all the meat for you from start to finish, and they really grill it beautifully

Sirloin: thick-cut but not tough

The first piece was the sirloin! It's thick so you really get the chew, but it isn't tough

It's even better with rice. I'm one of those people who eat meat to eat rice,, I can't eat meat without rice

They grilled the pollock roe nicely too, so I put a piece on top of the sirloin and ate them together

Scored chuck flap: more tender than expected

Next up was the scored chuck flap! Maybe thanks to the scoring, it was more tender than I expected, and it had a different charm from the sirloin

Rib finger: the last cut, with yukhoe bibim noodles

The last cut was the rib finger, which as always gets a deeper beefy flavor the more you chew, and eaten together with the yukhoe bibim noodles it was the perfect combination
