Korean restaurant in Suseong, Daegu with solo bar seating: Cafe Dongi

On a late-waking weekend, with a big dinner reservation already booked, I wanted something light and clean for lunch — proper Korean food. I'd long known Cafe Dongi as a Korean food favorite, and when I spotted a branch near Daebong-dong in Suseong 1-ga, I figured today was the day. So I went 😊

Where is Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga Branch, and what are the hours?

📍Address: 대구광역시 수성구 수성로69길 65 상가 7동 106호. It's near Daebonggyo, and close to Exit 4 of Daebong Station, so public transit was convenient too!

Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga Branch is near the Suseong 1-ga Community Center, which made parking easy!! The apartment shopping-complex parking lot was also usable. Overall, parking wasn't a hassle at all haha.

A plain but roomy dining room

Cafe Dongi has a plain exterior you could easily walk past, but look closer and it's actually a fairly large space.

I loved that the whole outer wall is floor-to-ceiling glass haha (I'm a natural-light fanatic ☀️).

When does the wait start? Arriving at 1pm on a weekend

We went at an in-between hour, around 1pm, and didn't have to wait — but ironically, more guests kept arriving as 1:30–2pm approached!! By the time we left, it was nearly full, and a line looked about to form. (The waitlist sign-up sheet is on the side table indoors 📝)

For guests waiting outside in the heat, they'd thoughtfully set out water. You could really feel how popular a spot it is!!

Clean, comfortable interior at Cafe Dongi

Stepping inside, everything felt tidy and well-organized. Eating in a comfortable space matters a lot, right? The tables were also spaced generously apart, so even with neighbors nearby, we could focus on our meal 😄

The bar table that makes solo dining easy

Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga Branch has 2- and 4-person tables, but also a bar-style table right in the center. A lot of people eat solo there!! The menu has that healthy home-cooked feel too, so eating alone here still felt like a filling, wholesome meal! If you're looking for a solo-dining-friendly restaurant, I'd recommend it 👍

Free self-service bar: eggs, five-grain rice and barley candy

What I think is Cafe Dongi's biggest perk: the unlimited egg, five-grain rice, and barley candy service bar! You can really feel the owner's generosity through this bar 💙

There was a 30-egg tray set up, refilled continuously as it emptied. We're light eaters so we stopped after one egg each, but plenty of guests were loading up on eggs! Since you can use it as freely as you like, this bar seems great for anyone wanting a hearty meal 🤍

Rice and dried seaweed can also be refilled from the service bar at no extra cost — total value for money!!👍

Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga Branch menu and prices

We usually read a restaurant's menu closely and decide what to order before we go (foodie J-planner problem). I thought I'd studied up, but the menu changes slightly over time, so some old items were gone and new ones had appeared. I've updated it here with the latest version, so do check!! There are regular set meals, hanjeongsik sets served with a tabletop brazier, and even the famous sweet-and-sour pork side — plenty of variety for a group to be happy ❤️

Single dishes for takeout

The food is so neat and delicious that a lot of people seem to order single dishes to go! Nearly every menu item was available for takeout 👍

What arrives when you order a set

When you pick a set, the default doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) could be swapped for kimchi jjigae for an extra ₩1,000. Plenty of sides could be added too. (Adding a side also gave a ₩1,000 discount on the sweet-and-sour pork!!haha;;)

Smoky stir-fried jjukkumi (baby octopus) set meal

The stir-fried baby octopus set came with jjukkumi bokkeum (spicy stir-fried baby octopus), doenjang jjigae, side dishes, a sauce, and seasonal tea. There was a personal brazier under the octopus dish, so it stayed hot all the way through, which I loved haha.

The basic side dishes were bean sprout salad, stir-fried anchovies, and pickled gungchae (a leafy vegetable) — three total. The octopus stir-fry also came with an extra mayonnaise sauce. Such home-cooked-feeling sides made it even better!

The stir-fried octopus itself had that faint smoky char flavor spreading the moment it hit your mouth. Smoky char plus sweet-spicy sauce plus springy octopus — the kind of flavor that makes you smile without meaning to 😆

Dipped in the mayo-based sauce, it got even smoother and more flavorful — totally my style haha.

The doenjang jjigae was salty and deeply savory too — a total rice thief!! A stew is essential with Korean food, and this one was really filling haha.

Sweet-spicy flame-grilled jeyuk (spicy pork) set meal

The jeyuk-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) set also came on a personal brazier, so it stayed warm until we finished.

The basic side dishes were the same as the octopus set above. (We cleared every one of them haha.)

The jeyuk-bokkeum had a well-balanced sweet-and-salty flavor — exactly what good jeyuk-bokkeum should taste like, the kind that makes rice disappear on its own! I'm sensitive to any gamy meat smell, but this was clean, no gamy notes at all. The portion of meat was generous too, enough even after a rice refill!!

Mini sweet-and-sour pork: a generous tasting portion

When the sweet-and-sour pork first arrived, I thought the portion looked a bit small, but once we cut into it, it was plenty!! It even came with fried rice cake pieces — a real treat haha.

The meat itself was so tender and substantial that the quality really stood out. I finally understood why everyone says you have to try Cafe Dongi's sweet-and-sour pork! Its reputation isn't for nothing haha — eating it myself, I got it completely 😆

Complimentary dessert: barley candy (bori gangjeong)

You know this is another good one, right?! Finishing off with omija tea (five-flavor berry tea) and barley candy, I didn't even need a café afterward haha. Cafe Dongi nailed even the finishing touch ❤️
