Seomyeon teppanyaki bar: mentaiko monjayaki at Cheolpaneun Pinggyego
In short
Cheolpaneun Pinggyego (철판은 핑계고) is a teppanyaki bar near Seomyeon Station in Busanjin, Busan, and one of the few places in the area that serves monjayaki, a runny Tokyo-style griddle pancake. A group that doesn't drink ordered mentaiko (pollock roe) monjayaki for ₩20,900, clam-packed Nagasaki jjamppong (seafood noodle soup) for ₩22,900 and a flying fish roe rice ball for ₩3,000. A staff member cooked the monjayaki on the table griddle and even drew Anpanman on it. Cheolpaneun Pinggyego is a good Seomyeon teppanyaki spot for trying monjayaki for the first time.

Where is Cheolpaneun Pinggyego in Seomyeon?
Cheolpaneun Pinggyego (철판은 핑계고) is a teppanyaki (iron griddle) bar at 35 Dongcheon-ro 85beon-gil, 1st floor, Busanjin-gu, Busan. It is open 17:00-1:00 on weekdays and 17:00-2:00 on weekends.
It's super close to Seomyeon Station! Any of exits 2, 4 or 6 works. It's also near Lotte Department Store Busan Main Branch and the Jeonpo Cafe Street, so the access is honestly the best, haha. We walked over from Jeonpo Cafe Street~

I'm not from Busan so I don't know the area well, but Cheolpaneun Pinggyego is definitely in a busy part of town, haha. It's on a street packed with bars, and the sign is big so it's easy to find! You can also see the menu from outside, which I liked.

What is the interior like, and how do you order?
The inside is really spacious, mostly 4-person tables. It's so big that I think it'd be great for a company dinner! If you're looking for a group dinner place in Seomyeon, how about Cheolpaneun Pinggyego, with its big space and varied menu?

You can order easily on the tablet at your table!

There's everything from set menus to all kinds of dishes! I learned just how varied teppanyaki can be, haha. And it's not only teppanyaki: there are also soup dishes (tang), which are the best bar food (in my opinion)! It was nice that there was plenty for non-drinkers like us.

Every table has a griddle, so your food stays warm the whole meal. I love teppanyaki so, so much ^_^

What does mentaiko monjayaki taste like in Seomyeon?
The mentaiko (pollock roe) monjayaki at Cheolpaneun Pinggyego costs ₩20,900. Monjayaki was my goal, so I ordered it without a second thought! Not many places sell monjayaki, but Cheolpaneun Pinggyego in Seomyeon does.

I hear monjayaki is a runny batter with vegetables, seafood, cheese and so on, cooked on a griddle. The main ingredient seems to be cabbage. It had lots of mentaiko too, which I loved!!
Staff cook it for you on the griddle
A staff member does the cooking (?) of the monjayaki for you~ Their hands are so fast. It's fun to watch! Great taste and entertainment, a Seomyeon teppanyaki favorite, Cheolpaneun Pinggyego ~_~

They chop it up diligently (?), sprinkle cheese on top, and done!

I thought that was it, but they drew a cute Anpanman on top, haha. Monjayaki gets a lot of talk for how it looks, but with Anpanman drawn on it, it just looks so appetizing ♥ Depending on your taste you can cook it longer, or press it down until it's a bit crispy like scorched rice!
They give you a small scraper (spatula) like this, so it's easy to eat. First impressions matter a lot, right? This was my first monjayaki ever at Cheolpaneun Pinggyego and it was so good that I'm going to look for a good place near where I live.. seriously so delicious.. I think people who like okonomiyaki will like it. It wasn't as strong-flavored as I expected, it was mild and really tasty.

Is the Nagasaki jjamppong good as a meal?
The Nagasaki jjamppong (spicy-style noodle soup) at Cheolpaneun Pinggyego is ₩22,900, with clams, shrimp and udon noodles, so it works as a full meal. I don't drink, but I still need a soup dish, that's me. There were several kinds of tang, and after some deliberation I suddenly craved Nagasaki jjamppong, so I ordered it!

As you can see, there are so many clams... ♥ And even shrimp!!! Is this what Nagasaki jjamppong in Busan is like? Totally loaded, haha.

There's a good amount of udon noodles too, so it's perfect as a meal.. ♥

The broth is milky white but has cheongyang chili peppers in it, so it's spicy and delicious. It's great with drinks and great without them. As expected of a Seomyeon bar favorite, Cheolpaneun Pinggyego~~

Is the flying fish roe rice ball worth ordering?
The flying fish roe rice ball at Cheolpaneun Pinggyego is ₩3,000 and is packed with flying fish roe and danmuji (yellow pickled radish). Then I realized we hadn't eaten any rice! So we ordered the rice ball late. You can tell they don't skimp on ingredients, a Seomyeon bar favorite, Cheolpaneun Pinggyego, haha.
My friend worked hard to make it for me, haha. Rice balls never fail, so of course it was delicious!
Would I go back to Cheolpaneun Pinggyego?
I only tried three dishes at Cheolpaneun Pinggyego, but all three were so good that I'm curious about the rest of the menu. I hear it's also famous for dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) in Seomyeon, so I'll try it next time I'm in Busan, haha.
