Yongsan snack bar after the National Museum, 11:30 combo: Hyeonseonine
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점) is a tteokbokki and Korean snack bar on Yongridan-gil near Sinyongsan Station in Yongsan, Seoul. After visiting the National Museum of Korea, the writer arrived around 11:30am on a weekday, was seated without waiting and ate the Hyeonseon Combo Set (tteokbokki, mini gimbap, assorted fritters, sundae (Korean blood sausage) and fish cake), and 10 minutes later more than 10 office workers were queuing for lunch. Where is Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch and when is it open?
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점) is a snack bar down an alley near Yongridan-gil, within walking distance of Sinyongsan Station. The hours the writer noted are 11:00–24:00, with a break from 14:30 to 16:00.
I had business in Yongsan, so I stopped by Hyeonseonine for the first time in a while. (I'd been to the National Museum of Korea!) It's such a famous snack bar that I'd always wanted to go once, and after visiting I understood why so many people come.
- 📍 Location: Hangang-daero 40ga-gil, Yongsan-gu, Seoul (near Yongridan-gil)
- 📍 Hours: 11:00–24:00, break time 14:30–16:00

Come out of Exit 5 or 6 of Sinyongsan Station on Line 4 and walk into the alley. A utility pole, so very Seoul. Charming, isn't it?

What kind of brand is Hyeonseonine?
Hyeonseonine started as a street stall in 2004 and now runs 8 directly managed branches, I hear. You can enjoy proper traditional snack food here, from spicy to mild tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), instant tteokbokki, handmade mini gimbap (seaweed rice rolls), handmade sundae (Korean blood sausage), crispy fritters and warm fish cake. It felt like a brand that wants to hand over tasty memories and experiences, not just sell food.
How long is the weekday lunch wait at Hyeonseonine?
When I arrived at around 11:30am on a weekday, 3–4 two-person tables were still open, so I ordered right away with no wait. But... 10 minutes later, more than 10 people were waiting. It was office workers' lunch hour, of course.

Reserve through Catch Table, order at the kiosk.

We had the Hyeonseon Combo Set. Looking around, lots of people were eating the instant tteokbokki too.

Atmosphere and facilities at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch
The restaurant is fairly large, yet it was packed with people. The ceiling is high, though, so it didn't feel stuffy, which I liked. The restrooms are separate for men and women, which is handy, and the chairs are built so you can tuck your bags inside.

There's even a guide on how to eat it deliciously, which shows the owner's thoughtfulness.

After ordering at the kiosk and sitting down, water, side dishes and pickled radish are self-serve. Office workers are the main customers, so aprons are a must, I guess.

Just what you need, no fuss! This place is ready like that. They also run a review event, so give it a try.

What's in the Hyeonseon Combo Set and how does it taste?
The Hyeonseon Combo Set comes with tteokbokki, mini gimbap, assorted fritters, sundae and fish cake. The table was filled to the brim, and it felt hearty just to look at.

Wheat rice cake tteokbokki
The first thing I tried was the tteokbokki: chewy wheat-flour rice cakes soaked through with a sweet and spicy sauce, the kind you keep reaching for. It isn't just hot; the savory depth is there, so I think anyone, young or old, can enjoy it. It lives up to the name of a top Yongsan tteokbokki spot.

Mini gimbap (seaweed rice rolls)
The mini gimbap is bite-sized so it's easy to eat, and it's packed with filling. Dipped in the tteokbokki sauce, it went really well. At a snack bar, you just have to have gimbap alongside, I thought.

Sundae (Korean blood sausage) and assorted fritters
The sundae was clean with no off smell, and it came with liver and lung too, so you get a variety of textures. Dipped lightly in the salt served alongside, the sundae's own nutty flavor came out even more.
The assorted fritters came out crispy, just right for dipping in the tteokbokki sauce. The vegetable fritter is full of filling, and the dumpling and other fritters weren't greasy, so I could enjoy them to the end.

Fish cake
The fish cake comes with warm broth, which softened the spiciness of the tteokbokki. The broth was refreshing and clean, and I finished a bowl in no time.
Above all, I was happy to enjoy so many dishes at once. It's good for sharing a variety with friends, and it also felt easy to come alone for a simple meal.

Is Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch worth a visit?
I think Hyeonseonine has been loved for so long because of its back-to-basics flavor. Without adding fancy ingredients, you can really taste familiar, nostalgic snack food.
If you're looking for a good place to eat in Yongsan, and want a proper taste of nostalgic snack food, I recommend Hyeonseonine. As befits a Yongridan-gil favorite, it's easy to reach and the menu is varied, so it should make a satisfying meal whoever you go with.
