A walk to the 4.19 Tower after lunch in Suyu

Some days I head straight to a café after lunch, but when the weather is nice, I find myself wanting to walk a little first. This time, I had lunch at Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch near Suyu's 4.19 Tower, then took a slow stroll around the tower beneath the clear sky.

I had Seoul-style old-fashioned bulgogi and bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles) that day. Having a warm meat dish and cool noodles together, then following it with a walk, made for a pretty fulfilling lunch route.

The Seoul-style old-fashioned bulgogi and bibim naengmyeon pairing

That day, I wanted something more substantial than just a light bowl of naengmyeon, so I ordered Seoul-style old-fashioned bulgogi and bibim naengmyeon together. The warm bulgogi and cold noodles differ in temperature from the start, which made the combination fun to eat.

After a few bites of bulgogi, a mouthful of bibim naengmyeon felt like a little reset for my palate, and going back to the meat felt less heavy. On days when ordering just one dish feels a bit lacking, this is a nice combination.

Bulgogi that went well with naengmyeon

Bulgogi is such a familiar dish that it is easy to order without overthinking it. Seoul-style old-fashioned bulgogi, introduced as one of Iseol Myeonok's signature dishes, worked well ordered alongside naengmyeon. Having a meat dish made the meal decidedly more filling than noodles alone.

I thought it could be a middle-ground choice for anyone who finds a heavy grilled-meat lunch too much but feels a little disappointed with noodles alone.

Cold, spicy bibim naengmyeon

The noodles I ordered alongside it were bibim naengmyeon. Its cold, spicy seasoning made it good to eat between bites of warm bulgogi. I had a bite of noodles after a piece of bulgogi, and also tried topping the noodles with a little meat.

They were fine separately too, but ordering them together made the flow of the meal feel more natural. It is a fitting combination for a hot day or a lunch when you want both meat and noodles.

The acorn jelly (dotorimuk) and banchan (Korean side dishes) that came with the meal were neat and tasty overall, too. The acorn jelly was a light accompaniment between lunch dishes, and I kept reaching for each of the side dishes. It was a lunch I enjoyed not only for the bulgogi and bibim naengmyeon, but also for the accompaniments.

Walk around the 4.19 Tower after the meal

A walk around the 4.19 Tower after the meal

When I came out after lunch, the sky was incredibly clear. On a day like that, it felt a shame to get straight into the car, so I walked slowly around the nearby 4.19 Tower. Since I had just eaten, I strolled at an easy pace, taking in the scenery rather than rushing anywhere.

It was a day when the blue sky showed beautifully, so it was nice to take some photos and enjoy a little post-meal breathing room while walking. If you are having lunch near the 4.19 Tower, it is worth taking a walk around the area on a nice-weather day rather than ending with the meal.

Personally, I liked the post-meal route as much as the food on this visit. Instead of heading far away immediately after a hearty lunch, walking somewhere nearby made the day feel a little less rushed.

The area around the 4.19 Tower is especially handy because you can combine the restaurant area with a place to walk. It makes planning easy when you are not sure what to do after a lunch appointment. It was a good route for when I wanted a slow 20- to 30-minute walk rather than going straight into a café.

Things to check before visiting

  • Check how busy lunch is — even a large restaurant can fill up at mealtimes.
  • Check parking conditions — parking and valet information may vary by visit date.
  • Consider the combined portions of bulgogi and naengmyeon — ordering both may be more filling than expected.
  • Choose your naengmyeon type in advance — deciding between mul naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) and bibim naengmyeon speeds up ordering.
  • Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk — they make walking around the 4.19 Tower easier after the meal.
  • Take a photo on a clear day — the sky and surrounding scenery look good together.
  • Check for high chairs when visiting with children — it is handy to confirm ahead of a family meal.
  • Check whether reservations are available for a larger group — group visits are better with the reservation conditions confirmed.
  • Do not walk too quickly right after eating — after bulgogi and naengmyeon, a slow walk is more comfortable.
  • Check the latest hours — it is best to confirm the last-order time too.

A few things that may be disappointing

  • Thinking only about naengmyeon without checking the meat portion. Ordering both can make for a very filling meal.
  • Visiting during the lunch rush without enough time. If you have plans afterward, allow a little extra time for the meal.
  • Wearing very uncomfortable shoes without planning for a walk. Comfortable shoes are best if you intend to walk to the 4.19 Tower.
  • Relying only on the fact that parking is available without checking the details. Conditions on site can vary.
  • Adding lots of seasoning to the noodles from the start. It is safer to taste the original flavor first, then adjust it to your preference.

This is a good route for anyone looking for a hearty lunch in Suyu, wanting both cold noodles and a meat dish, or hoping to add a nearby walk after eating. On the other hand, if you need to eat quickly and move on right away, it is best to leave a little extra time for a meal with both bulgogi and naengmyeon.

What stayed with me from that day was both the Seoul-style old-fashioned bulgogi and bibim naengmyeon lunch, and the time spent walking to the 4.19 Tower under the clear sky. On a nice day, adding a short stroll to a delicious lunch can make for a lovely day out.
