Gangbuk chicken shop for fresh sauced chicken: Gimssi Chicken

In short

Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch is a chicken shop in Gangbuk, Seoul, where you can take away dakgangjeong and chicken wings. I chose medium dakgangjeong for 9,000 won, chicken wings, and cheese jalapeño sauce, then watched the chicken get tossed in sauce right on the griddle. A great easy market snack or dinner takeaway.

What did I take away from Suyu Market?

When you wander around Suyu Market, market food is just impossible to walk past, right? Jeon (savory pancakes) and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) are great too, but the smell of chicken frying always makes me stop in my tracks, haha. On this visit to Suyu Market, I picked up medium dakgangjeong (sweet-and-spicy glazed fried chicken) and chicken wings from Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch (김씨치킨 수유시장점), a dakgangjeong specialist!

The price board in the photos shows dakgangjeong in mild, medium, and spicy flavors: medium is ₩9,000, special size is ₩13,000, and large is ₩17,000!! Such good prices!

Inside Gimssi Chicken at Suyu Market

As I looked around Suyu Market, I spotted Gimssi Chicken's yellow-and-red sign. Chicken was displayed out front, and I could even see it being fried inside, so it really caught my eye.

Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch sells not only dakgangjeong but also boneless fried chicken, chicken wings, drumsticks, and more. I debated what to get at first, then went with medium dakgangjeong—the basic thing I most wanted to try—and chicken wings that are easy to pick up one by one.

The medium dakgangjeong I ordered was ₩9,000. It seemed like an easy, no-pressure size for taking along as a snack while exploring the market, or bringing home to eat with other dishes.

Dakgangjeong tossed straight on the griddle

Best of all, I could watch it being made after ordering! They put the crisp fried chicken on a griddle, added the sauce, then tossed everything evenly with a spatula. The glossy red sauce coated every piece of dakgangjeong, and just watching it gave me that delicious, distinctly market-dakgangjeong feeling. If you come looking for great dakgangjeong at Suyu Market, I think it would be fun to watch the cooking too.

Watching my order get tossed in sauce straight on the griddle made the wait feel even more exciting somehow, haha.

And there it was—seriously delicious dakgangjeong, finished!!! It was so, so nice that it could be fried, sauced, and packed up right away.

Which sauce did I choose for the chicken wings?

I also asked for a sauce recommendation to have with the chicken wings!! The owner's pick was cheese jalapeño :) There were several options, from spicy sauces to cheese jalapeño and mustard, and the sauces in the photo were ₩500 each. If you're taking away chicken wings or fried chicken, adding one to suit your taste would be a nice idea!!

An easy takeaway while exploring the market

Ordering chicken these days can get pretty expensive, but at Suyu Market you can choose exactly the menu and amount you want, which feels like one of the joys of market food. With medium dakgangjeong at ₩9,000, it did not feel like a big splurge for a quick takeaway while looking around. I think it would suit anyone searching for a good-value place to eat in Suyu too.

More than anything, when you visit Suyu Market, you do not usually buy just one thing and leave—you browse around and pack up little bits of whatever you feel like eating, haha. Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch was a good place to pick up dakgangjeong as a snack or dinner while doing exactly that.

I could not resist that smell in the car on the way home. So before getting in, I ate one piping-hot chicken wing and then set off!

I ate the dakgangjeong and the remaining chicken wings at home, and they were so, so good! If you're looking for great dakgangjeong at Suyu Market, chicken around Mia Sageori, or a good-value Suyu takeaway that will not break the bank, put Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch on your list. I loved being able to watch the frying and saucing amid the market atmosphere, then choose exactly the menu and quantity I wanted. Recommended!
