Sunday hangover soup in Yeouido: Hanwoo ox-foot soup, Jungang Haejang

Jungang Haejang Yeouido is a hangover soup (haejangguk) restaurant on the 2nd floor of One Sentinel in Yeouido, Seoul, serving the hangover soup that made its name in Samseong. On a Sunday morning visit, the writer ordered haejang gunmandu (pan-fried dumplings), Hanwoo yang-seonji haejangguk (Korean beef tripe and ox blood hangover soup) and Hanwoo ujok-tang (ox-foot soup) with five big pieces of Hanwoo ox foot. Jungang Haejang Yeouido is worth recommending for everything from a morning hangover cure to lunch and an evening of gopchang (beef intestine) hotpot with drinks.

Kalguksu restaurant by Jeongdong Theater: hangover yukgaejang, Tanbaek

Tanbaek is a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on Jeongdong-gil in Jung-gu, Seoul, right next to the National Jeongdong Theater. The writer visited Tanbaek around 5pm, just after the break time ended, with an older friend who has worked in Jeongdong for 20 years, and ordered gom kalguksu (beef bone broth noodles), yukgaejang kalguksu (spicy beef soup noodles) and a 9,000-won yangmuchim (seasoned beef tripe); the clear, clean Korean beef broth stood out most. Tanbaek suits both a morning-after hangover cure and a warm dinner after a show at the National Jeongdong Theater.

Yeouido pub for daytime drinks with no break time: Yukhoegwan Pocha

Yukhoegwan Pocha Yeouido (육회관포차 여의도점) is a yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) and seafood pub on the 2nd floor of Hongwoo Building, 78 Gukjegeumyung-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, where daytime drinking is possible because there is no break time. At 3 p.m., from a window seat, the writer had the uni platter (sea urchin), same-day-slaughtered beef tartare and a Suntory Kakubin highball made with Singha soda water, and even the complimentary beef seaweed soup was satisfying. Open from 3 to 5 p.m. when most Yeouido restaurants close, Yukhoegwan Pocha is a good daytime drinking spot after a Han River walk.
