Gongdeok Station gyukatsu restaurant, weekend evening wait: Gyudo

In short

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) restaurant on basement level 1 of the Obelisk Apartment shopping arcade on Mapo-daero in Mapo, Seoul. Arriving by car on a weekend evening meant a wait, then a basic smoked gyukatsu set for 22,000 won and a Kirin Ichiban draft beer for 6,000 won, with each slice grilled on a personal hand-forged brass brazier and eaten with salt and wild garlic wasabi, then poached egg mixed into rice and bonito broth ochazuke to finish. For anyone chasing the gyukatsu they ate in Japan, Gyudo is the Seoul restaurant worth settling on.

Searching for good restaurants near Mapo Station, I found this gyukatsu place, Gyudo ✨ It's been years since I've had gyukatsu.. 🤤 I couldn't forget the taste from Japan and tried a few times in Korea, but it never worked out. So I gave up for a while — until I ate at Gyudo and finally found a place to settle on in Seoul 👍

I came by car — head to the Obelisk Apartment underground parking lot. It's split into an officetel line and an apartment line, so park on the apartment side and come down to the basement level.

Weekend evening wait, and the walkway straight from Mapo Station

I visited Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok on a weekend evening and there was a wait 🥲 Everyone, please make a reservation!! While waiting and sitting around, I realized it's directly connected to Mapo Station — so surprising..!

Inside Gyudo: seating for first dates and solo diners alike

Gyudo's interior is clean and stylish, so it'd be a great spot for a blind date..! They even have a separate coat closet so your jacket doesn't smell like meat — such a nice touch ✨

Plenty of seating, from bar seats good for solo dining to tables for 2-4.

Gyudo's menu beyond gyukatsu: yakiniku, niku mabushi, kids' donkatsu

Besides gyukatsu, they also have yakiniku, niku mabushi, and hot-plate steak, plus kids' donkatsu — so lots of families were there too 👍

Check the usage guide and how-to-eat instructions for reference.

Self-bar with three broths and Sindongjin pot rice

At Gyudo's self-bar there are three broths — Solomon's seal tea, bonito broth, and tonkotsu broth — so pour whichever suits your taste onto your pot rice.

Gyudo uses premium-grade Sindongjin rice, and refills are even free 👍👍 It had a nice chewy texture and great flavor.

In my personal drawer was a pouch engraved with the Gyudo logo containing cutlery, and flake topping underneath!

The 22,000-won basic smoked gyukatsu set and Kirin Ichiban draft beer

My companion ordered the Kirin Ichiban draft beer 6.0 — cold and dangerously familiar in the best way 🤭💓

The basic smoked gyukatsu set 22.0 arrived neatly as a full spread. It felt like I was on a trip to Japan haha 🫧

Gyudo's gyukatsu is made using an open-set smoker with wood smoking. Coming with pot rice was also such a surprise.

The wild garlic wasabi, all the sauces, and the mu-saengchae (radish salad) are apparently 100% handmade. The mu-saengchae especially was so good I finished it all haha (it's refillable, just ask a staff member!)

How to grill gyukatsu on your own brass brazier

Gyudo's specially custom-made brass brazier ✨ It heats up fast, so I put the gyukatsu on it. So gorgeous 🫶🏻

Sizzle sizzle.

Salt first, of course! 🧂 Then I tried it with the wild garlic wasabi too — it wasn't too spicy so I could pile it on generously.

Giving us a poached egg too was such a nice touch…🥚 Dipped the gyukatsu in it, then mixed the leftover with rice — genuinely so good 👍

To keep eating nonstop, I loaded up the brazier with gyukatsu 🤭 The salt + wasabi combo was the best.

Finishing the meal with bonito broth ochazuke

Adding the flakes made it feel like a mix of ochazuke and Korean nurungji (scorched rice) — such a unique combination >.< I went with the bonito broth, and it wasn't salty at all, just an explosion of umami — I finished every bit hehe

Even the receipt has a nice touch at Gyudo 🧾 Write a receipt review and you get premium butter and shrimp tempura, so don't miss out, everyone ✨

At Gyudo, Korea's only premium gyukatsu restaurant, grill and eat your own special gyukatsu made from oak-smoked, 20-hour-aged striploin, then finish with ochazuke 🫧
