I'm the type who saves any aesthetic-looking café the moment I spot it on Instagram, and one such place had been sitting in my map app for a while: Waltz and Dr. Mahn, an old-fashioned European-style building right on the Bukhangang river. My husband and I finally made the drive out to see it in person.

After parking, we walked to the left and there it was — a red-brick, antique European-style building facing straight out onto the calmly flowing Bukhangang river.

The building also runs a coffee museum, but unfortunately it was closed for its regular day off when we visited. I made a mental note to check it out next time!

The big windows across the front were flung open, and even on a weekday afternoon the terrace and window seats were full of couples, friends, and families taking their time.

Antique interior and uniformed staff who serve at your table

Inside, Waltz and Dr. Mahn is a classic space filled with antique furniture and decor that feels like it's carried decades of history. Ordering wasn't done via kiosk or tableside tablet at all — instead, a uniformed staff member came right to our table, old-school full-service restaurant style.

The window seats were already full, so we settled at a table further inside — but even there, a huge picture window framed the Bukhangang view perfectly, so there was zero feeling of being stuck in a back corner.

Every piece of furniture and decor carried the marks of age, yet everything was kept impeccably neat and dignified. It felt like stepping into an actual antique museum — a little classic European travel thrill washed over me.

What moved me most was that instead of the now-common kiosk or table-order tablet, a friendly uniformed staff member came directly to our table, explained the menu with real care, and served everything themselves — genuinely old-school, and it truly felt like being taken care of.

We ordered a hot Sumatra Mandheling, the signature drink Honor and Cheval, and an opera cake. On the staff's recommendation, I chose hot coffee instead of my usual iced.

I usually prefer iced, but the staff suggested hot as the way to get the full flavor of the Mandheling, so I went with that. The moment it arrived, what caught my eye first was the gorgeous vintage teacup in a Burberry-check pattern!

Taste notes: the acidity was held right back, giving way to a heavy body and a deep, nutty, slightly bitter bean flavor. A faint herbal note lingered at the finish, leaving everything remarkably clean.

It brought back fond memories of a Mandheling coffee a beloved younger friend once gifted me — the deep aroma alone was enough to soften my whole mood.

My husband's pick — the moment it landed on the table, it looked like an old-school café parfait reborn in glamorous, modern form!

Taste notes: cherries, kiwi, grapefruit, shine muscat grapes, and luxurious French macarons were piled generously on top, an instant burst of freshness even before the first bite.

Flavor layers: a smooth, nutty milk base underneath rich vanilla and chocolate ice cream, all tied together with a deep caramel sauce — like an entire dessert plate compressed into a single glass, ultra-sweet in the best way. Perfect if you like your dessert drinks sweet and rich.

While we lingered over coffee and dessert, I noticed a couple at the next table celebrating an anniversary. Watching the staff bring out their wine-paired dessert plate complete with a careful lettering message, my husband and I promised each other to come back for a proper course meal with wine on our next special anniversary.
