Yeonnam-dong donburi date: thick katsudon & tendon, Jongno Donburi
In short
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam is a Japanese rice bowl (donburi) restaurant in a basement on Donggyo-ro 46-gil in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo, Seoul. In a calm, quiet setting, the katsudon came with a sweet sauce and a thick pork cutlet, and the tendon had thin, crisp batter and plump shrimp tempura, both thoroughly satisfying. Jongno Donburi Yeonnam is a Yeonnam-dong rice bowl spot worth revisiting, whether on a date or for a solo meal.

It's good for eating alone and the mood is so nice for a date too, right?
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam menu
Jongno Donburi Yeonnam has a wide range of donburi (Japanese rice bowls), from katsudon to sake-don, and there is a nabe set (hot pot set meal) too.

- Katsudon (pork cutlet rice bowl)
- Ebi-don (shrimp rice bowl)
- Double katsudon
- Gyu-don (beef rice bowl)
- Tendon (tempura rice bowl)
- Buta-don (pork rice bowl)

The basic side dishes come out neatly arranged, and the spicy pepper is a real kick.

How is the katsudon at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam?
The katsudon at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam is a rice bowl with a sweet, teriyaki-like sauce, soft egg and a thick pork cutlet on top. With so many menu items I agonized for a while, but I wanted something sweet, so katsudon was an excellent choice!

Sweet teriyaki-style sauce, soft egg, and the cutlet on top. The rice was moist too, so it made a really filling meal.
See how thick and solid the pork cutlet is? I want to eat it again 🤤

What tempura comes on the tendon at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam?
The tendon at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam comes topped with shrimp, pepper, eggplant, king oyster mushroom, enoki mushroom and kabocha squash tempura.

The thin batter is amazingly crispy. It's not greasy at all, and the tempura is delicious,

the shrimp is plump too, and the ingredients are big and hearty, so every bite feels full.

It comes with soy-based sauce by default, so it goes well with the rice, and the tempura is tasty on its own, so I think it would pair really well with beer.
