Hapjeong Korean BBQ date with grilled kimchi and somaek: Ijjok

Ijjok Kimchi Samgyeopsal is a pork belly restaurant in a basement space near Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. Visiting for a dinner date, the writer ordered the 2–3 person set, ate pork belly grilled tableside by the owner topped with kimchi seared on the grill, paired it with somaek (soju-beer mix), and finished off the complimentary doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and steamed egg down to the last bite. A satisfying pick for anyone who wants to talk and eat without worrying about the grill.

Couple lunch near Hongik Univ. Station: salmon don and tempura don

Jongno Donburi Yeonnam is a rice bowl-focused Japanese restaurant tucked in a basement between Hongik University Station and Yeonnam-dong, Seoul. Salmon-loving me ordered the salmon rice bowl on the staff's recommendation while my boyfriend, who doesn't eat salmon, went for the tempura rice bowl, and we shared both happily. With its calm, cozy interior on top of good food, it's a solid pick for a Yeonnam-dong date lunch.
