Couple lunch near Hongik Univ. Station: salmon don and tempura don

In short

Jongno Donburi Yeonnam is a rice bowl-focused Japanese restaurant tucked in a basement between Hongik University Station and Yeonnam-dong, Seoul. Salmon-loving me ordered the salmon rice bowl on the staff's recommendation while my boyfriend, who doesn't eat salmon, went for the tempura rice bowl, and we shared both happily. With its calm, cozy interior on top of good food, it's a solid pick for a Yeonnam-dong date lunch.

A Japanese restaurant chosen for lunch near Hongik Univ. Station

Today I'm writing about Jongno Donburi Yeonnam, a place my boyfriend and I found while looking for lunch near Hongik Univ. Station. I've always liked rice bowls and Japanese food in general, so I went hunting for a good spot around the station and ended up here — and both the food and the vibe of the place won me over, so I wanted to share it with you :)

A calm, cozy interior 🌿

The first thing I noticed the moment we walked in was how calm and comfortable the atmosphere was. There are so many stylish, picture-perfect restaurants in Yeonnam-dong these days, but Jongno Donburi Yeonnam wasn't trying to be flashy — it had a quiet, unhurried mood instead, which actually made it a much more relaxing place to eat.

Overall it felt clean but warm, the kind of place that would work fine for eating alone, and equally good for a relaxed meal with a partner or friend like me. Restaurants usually make you focus purely on the food, but here the space itself gave off such comfort that I felt myself relax throughout the meal.

The menu and the staff's recommendation

On top of the interior, I was also impressed by how carefully made the menu was. (Every photo looked so delicious it was hard to choose, ugh.) The kind staff told us salmon was today's recommended dish, so as a certified salmon killer, I decided to trust them and order it haha!

What I ordered: salmon rice bowl 🐟

Honestly, salmon rice bowls are tricky to nail well — the taste can vary a lot depending on the freshness of the salmon and how it pairs with the rice — so finding a genuinely good one isn't as easy as you'd think. But this one really satisfied me. The salmon was soft and moist, and it went perfectly with the rice.

With each bite of salmon and rice together, the flavor was clean and savory in a way that balanced really well, and it wasn't an overly strong or heavy-tasting bowl, so I kept wanting more. I think anyone who loves salmon would be happy with this dish. I already love salmon so I had high expectations going in, but it exceeded them — this ended up being the most memorable dish of the meal 🤍

(Seriously, one bite in and I could've fainted from how good it was.)

My boyfriend, who doesn't like salmon, got the tempura rice bowl! 🍤

My boyfriend, who came with me, isn't much of a salmon fan, so he didn't hesitate to order the tempura rice bowl instead. I had the salmon bowl and he had the tempura bowl, and ordering different dishes meant we could share and try both — which was nice :)

The tempura bowl also had a great combo of crispy tempura and rice, and more than anything, I was happy to see my boyfriend, who doesn't usually eat salmon, enjoy his dish way more than expected. If you're a couple with different food tastes, splitting up like this — one salmon don, one tempura don — could be a great way to go.

The visuals were insane, ugh. It was genuinely so good I almost fainted~!! I figured the kimchi would just sit there since rice bowls can feel heavy, but it wasn't greasy at all and I ended up scraping the bowl clean with the kimchi~

There's a restroom inside the restaurant, so that's convenient too~

Looking for a Japanese restaurant near Hongik Univ. Station

There are so many good restaurants near Hongik Univ. Station that it's genuinely hard to decide where to go, but Jongno Donburi Yeonnam turned out to be a solid choice when you want good food and a good atmosphere at once. I especially loved the calm, cozy interior — it wasn't loud or chaotic, so we could take our time eating, and it felt like a great fit for a date in Yeonnam-dong.

Above all, I really enjoyed my salmon rice bowl, and even my boyfriend, who doesn't like salmon, was satisfied with his tempura rice bowl — so I think this place works even for couples with different tastes. If you're looking for a clean, well-atmosphered Japanese restaurant near Hongik Univ. Station in Yeonnam-dong, I'd recommend trying a rice bowl at Jongno Donburi Yeonnam 🍚 Next time I visit, I'd love to try one of the other rice bowl options too :)
