Achasan Tong Galbitang near Achasan Station: the day the ribs were huge

Achasan Tong Galbitang (아차산통갈비탕) serves whole-rib galbitang near Achasan Station, and I went with a friend for a restorative bowl of soup. On a day that's cloudy one minute and hot the next, you just want to fill your stomach with something solid. We kept saying "let's eat something soupy today" until we finally headed to Achasan Tong Galbitang, known as a go-to near Achasan Station. The goal was simple: a steaming bowl of soup to properly recharge! 😊

When we got to the front, the big sign and the galbitang photos caught my eye first. Just like the name says, you can tell they're confident about their whole-rib soup. It looked like lunchtime could get crowded, so it's better to go with some time to spare haha.

Also, Achasan Tong Galbitang has a break time from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM, so be sure to check the time!

Inside Achasan Tong Galbitang

Inside, there are wooden tables under bright lighting, and the overall mood was comfortable for a meal. It's less a fancy place than

Jumbo king galbitang for ₩18,000: rib size and taste

What we ordered at Achasan Tong Galbitang was the jumbo king galbitang (₩18,000). The name had "jumbo" in it, so I wondered just how big it would be, but the moment it arrived, that thought vanished. A long rib bone rises above the earthenware pot, and just looking at it I thought, "We're really going to eat well today!" My friend and I stared at the size of the ribs for a while as soon as it came out 😄

The broth was clear and clean. With scallions and egg garnish (jidan) on top, it looked neat, and the scent of meat rose faintly through the hot steam.

Ribs this big, won't they be tough?

Honestly, I was a little worried at first that ribs this big would be tough. But when I pulled the meat with tongs, it came off the bone softly. Even the meat clinging around the rib bone was moist, not dry. I dipped the meat that tore apart along the grain into the broth, then soaked it in mustard sauce and ate it with rice, and the clean, mild flavor of the meat came through even more. With galbitang, it's a letdown when the meat is big but awkward to eat, but at Achasan Tong Galbitang the large size and tender texture go together, which I was happy with.

Deodeok salad and the side dishes

Personally, a piece of meat with a little kimchi on top went well together,

and paired with the spicy deodeok salad (무침, seasoned mountain root), my appetite really perked up. I thought deodeok was just a side dish, but the seasoning was bold and the chew was great, so I kept reaching for it. It's said to be prepared daily as a main side dish, so if you have galbitang at Achasan Tong Galbitang, definitely try it too. The side dish lineup was hearty as well.

Kimchi, kkakdugi, onion and chili pepper came out as basic sides that suit galbitang, and the spicy sides made the broth taste even cleaner.

Unlimited rice and the self-serve misugaru and gangjeong

Above all, Achasan Tong Galbitang offers unlimited rice, so even on a day with plenty of meat and broth you can keep eating without worry. You come to recharge, and it'd be a shame to run out of rice, right?

After the meal, I also grabbed misugaru (roasted grain drink) and gangjeong (crispy sweet rice snack) from the self-serve corner. The misugaru was thick, not watery, with a rich nutty flavor, perfect as a palate cleanser after hot galbitang. Gangjeong is offered as a freebie too, so it ends the meal on a small, happy note! 😊

The downsides: waits and break time

The downsides of Achasan Tong Galbitang are that there can be a wait at popular times, and that there's a break time. Especially if you're planning a meal after Achasan, I recommend avoiding the hours around 3:30 PM.

It's not just a place with big ribs; I could actually eat the meat on the bone tenderly. I think I'll remember it on days when I want a hearty meal with a friend, or when I'm craving an easy, restorative dish near Achasan.
