Cheonggyecheon tteokbokki shop: mild pot after a walk, Hyeonseoni-ne

Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch (현선이네 청계즉석점) is a pojangmacha-style (street tent bar–style) snack bar serving instant tteokbokki (rice cakes simmered at your table) beside Cheonggyecheon Stream, near Exit 3 of Euljiro 1-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. After a walk along Cheonggyecheon on a chilly day, two friends shared mild instant tteokbokki for 2, simmered on the table's induction burner, sipped the fish cake broth that arrives first, and fished out the fried dumplings early to keep them crisp. For two spice-shy eaters, the mild tteokbokki at Hyeonseoni-ne was slightly spicy but easy to eat, a warm meal after a Cheonggyecheon walk.

Hoehyeon Station peanut bread shop: 80-piece box for beer, Daesin

Daesin Ttangkong-ppang Namdaemun Market branch is a peanut bread and egg bread shop on Namdaemunsijang 2-ga-gil, near Hoehyeon Station Exit 5 in Jung-gu, Seoul. On the way to a dinner meetup near Namdaemun, the writer picked up an 80-piece box of peanut bread for ₩10,000. The whole roasted peanuts inside were so nutty that the writer and a friend could not stop eating while sharing it. For a Namdaemun Market snack to share or something to go with beer, the Daesin Ttangkong-ppang 80-piece box is a generous, good-value pick.

Seochon cherry blossom alley hanok café: free water spring at Oldsse

Oldsse Seochon is a hanok café in Seochon, Jongno, Seoul, tucked into an alley that turns into a cherry blossom path every spring. After lunch and a walk around Seochon, the writer stopped at Oldsse Seochon for a hot latte and an Irish coffee. The highlights were 'Oldsse Ongdalsaem' (올딧세 옹달샘), a free water spot out front where any passerby can have a drink, and the high-ceilinged interior with exposed rafters and clay walls. Oldsse Seochon is a stylish hanok café worth adding to any Seochon alley walk.

First gyukatsu, grilled with salt, near Gwanghwamun Station: Hurato

Hurato Sikdang Gyeongbokgung Main Branch is a Japanese restaurant serving gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) and steki (seared beef steak) in the basement of the Royal Building Arcade, near Exit 1 of Gwanghwamun Station in Jongno, Seoul. Trying gyukatsu for the first time after seeing it on blogs, the blogger arrived with a friend around 1pm, walked in without a wait, and grilled a gyukatsu and a steki set (19,500 won each) on a tabletop grill. Hurato Sikdang Gyeongbokgung Main Branch was satisfying, offering both the nutty breadcrumb crust of gyukatsu and the tender texture of steki.
