Bite-size futomaki dinner in Gwanpyeong-dong, Daejeon: Choi Dining

In short

Choi Dining Daejeon Gwanpyeong is a fusion Japanese restaurant near the waterside park in Gwanpyeong-dong, Yuseong, Daejeon. Over dinner with a friend before a trip back to Seoul, the futomaki (thick seaweed rice roll) arrived cut into pieces small enough to eat in one bite, so the fillings stayed neatly in place alongside a whole bacon cream pasta. Choi Dining Daejeon Gwanpyeong is relaxed enough for both a date and a solo dinner.

First photo from the visit to Choi Dining Daejeon Gwanpyeong

I met a friend before heading back to Seoul from Daejeon. She told me to come near her neighborhood, Jeonmin-dong, and once I got there, she treated me to a really good Japanese dining spot.

It's easy to find near the waterside park, and it's a comfortable spot for either a date or a solo weekday dinner. Inside, there's a mix of 2-person and 4-person tables, so you can settle in comfortably depending on why you're there and enjoy some Japanese food.

How the futomaki and whole bacon cream pasta are plated

When the food arrived, the futomaki (seaweed rice roll), packed with filling right to the edge of the plate, and

the cream pasta in its light, glossy sauce grabbed my attention right away.

The futomaki showed off a gorgeous mix of colors — bright orange salmon, yellow egg roll and pickled radish, green cucumber strips, and crispy fried shrimp. The cream pasta had cheese powder and parsley scattered over a generous swirl of noodles, with a thick whole strip of bacon laid across the top for extra heartiness. The bacon, browned on the outside and juicy inside, paired with the neatly arranged, colorful futomaki made for a standout plating.

What does the bite-size futomaki taste like?

On my friend's strong recommendation, I ordered the futomaki, and what struck me most was the size — just right for a single bite, with none of the filling falling apart. At most other places the rolls are so big that cutting them ends up crushing all the ingredients, but here it fits perfectly in one bite, letting you taste the ingredients as they are. Crisp cucumber, soft salmon, and savory tempura come together beautifully with the house special sauce, delivering proper futomaki flavor.

The cream pasta we tried alongside came with a thick, pork-belly-like strip of whole bacon that you cut with scissors and eat together with the noodles — the savory cream and salty bacon balance each other perfectly. It's rich without being greasy, and it made for a satisfying way to wrap up dinner with my friend.
