Bukgajwa-dong group dinner spot with free parking: Mapo Gui Madang
In short
Mapo Gui Madang Bukgajwa Direct Branch is a pork belly restaurant on Geobukgol-ro 23-gil in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, where whole pork belly is pre-grilled and served on a hot stone plate. On a visit with his son, the writer had the pre-grilled whole pork belly with the house nut sauce, Jeolla-style pa kimchi (green onion kimchi), jjageuchi noodles and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), and parked for free. For a group dinner in Bukgajwa-dong with no parking worries, Mapo Gui Madang is worth a spot on the list.

Seodaemun-gu, Seoul — this was the pork belly of my life, you really have to go.
Picking a dinner spot for a group is genuinely harder than it sounds, isn't it? Everyone has different tastes, and once you add parking worries into the mix, it can make you not even want to decide. If you're in the Bukgajwa-dong area weighing your BBQ options, hear me out today.
The Bukgajwa-dong grill house I drove past every day but never tried

I'll be honest — I walked past this place every single day. And every time I thought "next time, next time," but never actually went. That day, too, I originally planned to go to my usual neighborhood BBQ spot, but my son texted me before he'd even left work: "Dad, hurry up and get off work so we can go eat meat" haha.

Carried along by that momentum, I finally opened the door to Mapo Gui Madang Bukgajwa Direct Branch. It's located at 2 Geobukgol-ro 23-gil, Seodaemun-gu, in the Sinjin Building.
Parking in Bukgajwa-dong: Mapo Gui Madang offers free parking

Honestly, it's not easy to expect free parking at a neighborhood BBQ joint in Seoul. I came in worrying about alley parking nearby, but Mapo Gui Madang Bukgajwa Direct Branch actually offers free parking. That's a bigger point than you'd think when choosing a group dinner spot — especially if a team of 10+ people is each driving their own car. Just being able to set that worry aside feels like half the meal is already won.
The side dishes and service before the pork belly arrives

After we ordered, the side dishes came out first. But the meat took forever to show up. "Why is this taking so long?" I wondered. Turns out they pre-grill everything before bringing it out. The whole pork belly, its surface golden with that smoky pre-grilled flavor, gets cut into bite-sized pieces and neatly arranged on a heated stone plate. They basically cook it all for you. The older I get, the more I appreciate places that do this — no more sweating over the grill while everyone else eats and you barely get a bite yourself. That never happens here.
Why the whole pork belly, pre-grilled and set on a stone plate, stands out

Pork belly is honestly hard to tell apart from place to place. Even at well-known franchises, it mostly tastes the same, and the difference usually comes down to service or atmosphere. But at Mapo Gui Madang Bukgajwa Direct Branch, the meat itself was different. Pre-grilled with that smoky flavor and served on a stone plate, the juices stay locked in rather than draining away. Soft and moist inside, golden and crisp outside.

House nut sauce, Jeolla-style pa kimchi and pork belly in one bite
And then there's the special sauce here. It sits where you'd normally find ssamjang (soybean dipping paste) at a pork belly place, but this one is a real trick. It has a nutty flavor, a bit like roasted grain powder (misugaru), and somehow it also carries a hint of ssamjang. It's not a sauce you can pin down to just one flavor, but spooned over the meat, it worked incredibly well.
On top of that, there's a separate serving of the Jeolla-do green onion kimchi that's repeatedly mentioned on the sign. Both the napa cabbage kimchi and green onion kimchi get grilled together on the pan in the rendered pork fat — the napa kimchi was properly fermented, exactly right for pairing with pork belly, and the green onion kimchi... it tasted just like my grandmother's, the best kimchi-maker in the family. Calling it a perfect trio with the pork belly wouldn't be an exaggeration at all.
After the meat: jjageuchi noodles and doenjang jjigae

I personally have a low-key important criterion when choosing a BBQ restaurant — whether ramyeon is on the menu. It might sound trivial, but a BBQ place that has ramyeon automatically becomes one of my favorites. This time, instead of ramyeon, we ordered jjageuchi (spicy noodle soup), and the noodles had a proper chewy bite. The water-to-sauce ratio was spot on, and they didn't skimp on the egg and cucumber toppings — satisfying to look at and to eat.
My son played taste-tester for the doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and it passed. There's a reason doenjang jjigae at a BBQ restaurant tastes good — the pork fat adds a savory richness that blends with the deep flavor of the soybean paste. This place's doenjang jjigae stayed true to that basic formula.
The staff at Mapo Gui Madang stayed with me as much as the food
Throughout the meal, the staff in the dining hall were incredibly kind. And not just kind — genuinely funny. They'd drop a quip as they brought out dishes, and the mood stayed great the whole time. Walking out, my son and I must have said "let's come again" ten times. It reminded me once more that a great restaurant is never just about the food.
