Why I picked Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch among Bongdam Chinese restaurants

We were looking for a Chinese restaurant for two on a weekend lunch and ended up at Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch (동천홍 봉담점). To tell you the conclusion first: "I think we'll come again."

"What should we eat today?" I'm sure many of you ask that every weekend. So did I. We'd had meat a few days earlier, we'd been eating a lot of Korean food lately, and I wanted something different but still filling. Chinese food came up naturally. At first I was thinking about jajangmyeon (black bean noodles), but as we talked, someone said, "I want yurinki for the first time in a while," and I immediately searched for Chinese restaurants in Bongdam.

There are more Chinese restaurants in Bongdam than you'd think. But I wanted a place that's good for family, easy to park at, and has a nice atmosphere, and Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch naturally caught my eye.

Where is Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch?

Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch is on the 2nd floor of the Fila building at Wangnim Rest Area, about 2 minutes by car from Jangan University. First-timers might worry it's hard to find, but the building is quite big and stands out, so it's easier than you'd expect.

It's also a convenient location from Hyangnam, Jeongnam, Ujeong and Paltan, not just Bongdam.

Is parking easy at Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch?

The parking lot in front of the building is quite large, and even though we visited at weekend lunchtime, parking wasn't difficult. If you're looking for a Chinese restaurant in Bongdam with easy parking, that's a clear plus.

Parking is one of the things I care about most when judging a restaurant. However good the food is, inconvenient parking makes me hesitate to go back, especially when I'm bringing my parents or a child.

Browsing the menu in the elevator

We took the elevator up to the 2nd floor, and the inside was covered with photos of dishes. I saw jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), dongpoyuk (braised pork belly), yurinki, jeongabok (mixed seafood and meat stir-fry), gochujapchae (pork with chili peppers), palbochae (eight-treasure stir-fry), the Dongcheonhong special rice dish and more.

Atmosphere and private rooms at Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch

Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch is a calm, upscale-feeling Chinese restaurant with brick interiors and soft indirect lighting, and it has a separate private room next to the entrance. The first thing I thought when I arrived was, "It's much cleaner than I expected." It felt a little different from a typical neighborhood Chinese place, and I naturally thought it would be good to bring my parents here.

Private rooms make it even better

The room next to the entrance looked good for all kinds of occasions: family gatherings, birthday meals, company dinners, formal family introductions and small get-togethers. Quite a few people look for restaurants with private rooms these days because you can eat quietly, and Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch satisfied me on that point too.

A high-ceilinged hall that doesn't feel stuffy

Inside, the ceiling is high, so it doesn't feel stuffy. The space is wide and open, and I was comfortable throughout the meal. The birdcage-shaped lights hanging from the ceiling were also memorable; it's a small thing, but it helps set the mood. Personally, it felt more like a Chinese restaurant than an ordinary Chinese takeout-style place.

A good place to visit with kids

Baby chairs were also available. Little touches like this show consideration for families, and when I looked around, I did see families who had come with children.

A neat self-service area

The self-service area with water, cups and tableware was also tidy. Overall I got the impression that hygiene is good. Taste matters in a restaurant, but so does cleanliness, and I was satisfied on this point too.

Torn between tangsuyuk and yurinki

I opened the menu at Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch and agonized longer than expected. Tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), yurinki, kkwabaerou (sweet and sour pork, Harbin style), dongpoyuk, jeongabok, gochujapchae, palbochae… there were so many things I wanted to eat.

I was torn between tangsuyuk and yurinki until the very end. But I usually like yurinki, and I kept thinking of the menu photo I'd seen in the elevator. In the end I decided on yurinki.

What we ordered for two, and the prices

  • Yurinki (small) ₩28,000
  • Jjamppong rice ₩10,000
  • Total ₩38,000

I think one dish plus one meal item, small yurinki and jjamppong rice, is just right for two people. It was the combination I was most satisfied with.

The side dishes matter more than you'd think

The side dishes were danmuji (pickled yellow radish) and zha cai (짜사이) salad. Zha cai will be familiar to anyone who likes Chinese restaurants, and its crunchy texture and salty taste cleanse the palate. Eating yurinki, then zha cai, then a spoonful of jjamppong rice broth brought my appetite back. It's a small side dish, but it did its job well.

Is the jjamppong rice broth spicy at Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch?

The jjamppong rice at Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch isn't excessively spicy, just pleasantly kick-y, with a broth where the savory depth of seafood and the sweetness of vegetables blend well. The first dish out was the jjamppong rice, and the red color of the broth raised my expectations right away.

I think a jjamppong is mostly judged by the first spoonful. The moment I tasted the broth, I said, "Oh?" It wasn't too spicy and it wasn't too bland. It was just right.

Why I liked the jjamppong rice: balanced broth

There are two types of jjamppong. The first is one with only strong heat, and the second is one where you keep spooning up the broth. Personally I like the second kind, and the jjamppong rice at Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch was exactly that.

What you notice at first is the spicy kick, but if you savor it a little more slowly, you taste the savory depth of seafood and the sweetness of vegetables together. So it isn't just spicy; it's a broth you keep reaching for.

Plenty of squid and vegetables

The jjamppong rice had squid, onion, napa cabbage, assorted vegetables, shellfish and more. The squid in particular wasn't chewy. Sometimes the squid in jjamppong is so tough it's hard to chew, but the squid that day was on the tender side. There were plenty of vegetables too, which made the broth taste much more refreshing.

Why I ordered jjamppong rice instead of jjamppong

I actually thought about regular jjamppong that day too. But it was lunchtime and I wanted something hearty, so I chose jjamppong rice instead of jjamppong. It turned out to be a really good choice. Dipping the rice in the broth felt like eating a spicy gukbap (rice soup). It tasted like something I'd crave on a rainy or cold day.

Why I finished the broth

Usually with jjamppong, I eat the noodles and sometimes leave the broth. But that day I ate quite a lot of the broth, because it wasn't too salty or harsh. The more I ate, the more the savory depth of seafood came up, and I could taste the sweetness from the vegetables too. A broth like that makes the spoon keep going on its own.

How was the yurinki at Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch?

The yurinki at Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch, crispy outside and juicy inside with Cheongyang chili and plenty of vegetables piled on top, was the most satisfying dish of the day. It came out while I was eating a bit of the jjamppong rice, and it was personally the dish I'd been looking forward to most.

I go to Chinese restaurants often, but there aren't many days I order yurinki, because tangsuyuk is so popular. But sometimes I crave yurinki more than tangsuyuk, because of that combination of sweet and sour sauce, crispy fried chicken and fresh vegetables.

The look alone passes the test

The first thing I thought when the yurinki arrived was, "This is much more generous than I expected." The plate was piled with Cheongyang chili, shredded green onion, sprouts, lettuce, red cabbage and more. The colors were great too, so it was good for photos. These days looks matter as much as taste, right? In that sense I was quite satisfied with how the yurinki looked.

The state of the frying really matters

The most important factor in yurinki is the frying. If it's soggy, satisfaction drops no matter how good the sauce is, and if it's too hard, it's a burden to eat. The yurinki at Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch was right in the middle. It was crispy outside and moist inside, and the batter wasn't thick, so it was easy to eat.

The first bite

The moment I took a bite, I thought, "This is good!" First you feel the crunch, then the juiciness of the chicken, and finally the sweet and sour sauce lingers. The order of flavors flowed together naturally.

The Cheongyang chili was a stroke of genius

What impressed me most while eating the yurinki was the Cheongyang chili. Yurinki can get a bit greasy after a few pieces, but with the chili on it, that wasn't the case at all. The sharp heat cut through the richness every so often, so I could enjoy it to the end.

Even better with lots of vegetables

The amount of vegetables on the yurinki was substantial too. More vegetables bring out the texture. Eating the chicken together with vegetables is much better than eating the chicken alone. The sweet and sour sauce went especially well with the vegetables.

How to enjoy yurinki

This is my personal recommendation. Eat it this way and you'll really feel the charm of yurinki.

  • Pick up a piece of chicken
  • Put a little Cheongyang chili on it
  • Add some vegetables too
  • Dip it well in the sauce and eat

How big is the small yurinki?

The small yurinki at Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch was just right for two adults eating it with a meal item. Even though it's the small size, it was enough for three people.

Why I chose yurinki over tangsuyuk

Honestly, I agonized until the end. Tangsuyuk rarely fails, but with yurinki there's a big gap between places that do it well and places that don't. On this visit, choosing yurinki was the right answer. It was actually a dish that stayed in my memory longer than tangsuyuk would have.

What I liked most personally

The food was good, but what I liked was that nothing was overdone. The jjamppong rice wasn't too spicy and the yurinki wasn't too sweet. I think the overall balance made it even more satisfying.

Is Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch a good place for a family meal?

Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch met most of the conditions you look for in a family meal: parking, menu choices, bringing kids, cleanliness and quiet. Having visited in person, I could see why so many family groups come.

  • Is parking easy?
  • Are there dishes your parents would like?
  • Can you bring kids?
  • Is the place clean?
  • Is it not noisy?

Parents' generation often prefer dishes to jajangmyeon or jjamppong, and there were plenty of choices like yurinki, dongpoyuk, palbochae and jeongabok. Kids, on the other hand, like jajangmyeon or tangsuyuk, so it looked like a good family dining spot.
