Korean restaurant in Suyu with kid-friendly bulgogi: Iseol Myeonok

In short

Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch (이설면옥 수유본점, also known as Iseol Hamheung Naengmyeon) is a Korean restaurant on 419 Café Street in Gangbuk, Seoul, serving naengmyeon (cold noodles), bulgogi and galbi. For a weekday family dinner, the blogger ordered the Seoul-style old-fashioned bulgogi her child had asked for, using the 2+1 deal, plus king dumplings, and the child happily ate the complimentary japchae and seaweed soup on their own. With mild seasoning and plenty of parking, Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch is an easy recommendation for dinner with kids.

I visited Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch (이설함흥냉면 수유본점) on 419 Café Street, a spot I'd happily recommend for dinner in Suyu. The menu runs from naengmyeon (cold noodles) to Seoul-style bulgogi, galbitang (short rib soup) and galbijjim (braised short ribs), so it works for everyone from kids to grown-ups. We had a great meal here once with my parents-in-law, so this time we came back because my child wanted bulgogi.

A family restaurant on 419 Café Street with no parking stress

There are private parking lots in front of and behind the restaurant, so you can visit without worrying about parking. Plenty of places on 419 Café Street are surprisingly awkward for parking, so this was a real plus.

Last time we came at weekend lunch, and it was crowded with a wait. This time it was a weekday evening, and it felt relatively relaxed.

A good atmosphere for kids and parents

The dining room is spacious and the tables are nicely spaced, so it was comfortable to eat here. Baby chairs are available, and we saw lots of big multi-generation families too. It felt right both for a family meal with a child and for taking your parents out.

How does the Seoul-style bulgogi 2+1 deal work?

At the time of our visit, the restaurant was running a 2+1 event: order 2 servings of Seoul-style bulgogi (서울옛날불고기) and get 1 free, or order 4 and get 2 extra. My child said they wanted bulgogi, which is why we came, so we ordered the signature Seoul-style bulgogi.

We ordered 2+1 servings of Seoul-style bulgogi, plus king dumplings (왕만두) and steamed rice.

A generous spread, starting with the side dishes

The side dishes are skate hoe-muchim (간재미 회무침, spicy marinated raw skate), japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), cabbage salad, corn salad, kimchi and pickled onions, which is quite generous.

Side dishes including skate hoe-muchim

My favorite was the skate hoe-muchim. It's also sold as a proper menu item, and getting it as a side dish is great: the sweet-and-sour flavor is perfect for whetting your appetite before the meal.

The seaweed soup and japchae that won my child over first

A warm seaweed soup (miyeokguk) comes out too. With both seaweed soup and japchae, which my child loves, they dug in with their nose in the bowl before the bulgogi even arrived! 🤣 When you eat out with a kid, nothing makes a parent happier than seeing them go for a side dish they like. The meal got off to a very smooth start.

Seoul-style bulgogi piled high with bean sprouts

The Seoul-style bulgogi is cooked at the table on a burner. There's plenty of meat, and a mountain of bean sprouts is piled on top, so the look of it surprised me the moment it arrived. The sprouts do wilt as it cooks, but since it starts out so generous, the amount is still substantial.

A staff member also watches over the bulgogi until it's fully cooked, so you don't have to worry about a thing and can just enjoy eating. Once it's done, the heat is turned down low and it keeps simmering as you eat, so the bulgogi stays warm until the end of the meal.

Is the bulgogi seasoning too salty or sweet?

The seasoning is just right: not harsh, and easy to eat. Some restaurant bulgogi is so sweet-and-salty that it tastes great but leaves you terribly thirsty afterward, right? This isn't like that. It's not bland either, just the perfect flavor to eat with rice.

Well-cooked bulgogi with lots of bean sprouts was really good. Crunchy sprouts and tender beef work well together, and there are mushrooms and glass noodles mixed in too, so you get a variety of textures. The portion is generous: I ate only about half a bowl of rice and it was still plenty for a meal.

Table during the Seoul-style bulgogi dinner

The regulars' raw egg, sukiyaki-style trick

During the meal, a video from a TV broadcast was playing on the restaurant's screen. It said regulars crack a raw egg into the edge of the hot pot and dip their bulgogi in it. It's like eating Japanese sukiyaki! I mean, who thinks of using the pan this way? A true food genius. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I love sukiyaki, but sadly I saw this video right near the end of our meal. Next time I'm definitely trying it this way.

King dumplings for my dumpling-obsessed husband

For my husband, who's a huge dumpling fan, we also ordered the king dumplings. They come from a naengmyeon specialist, so I expected them to be good, and sure enough they were. As the name says, they're really big.

The meat filling is packed in with no gaps, so it was satisfying from the first bite. I was already full from the bulgogi and only meant to taste one, but it was so good I kept reaching for more. They'd go well with naengmyeon, but they also pair nicely with Seoul-style bulgogi.

Is it a good Suyu spot for a family meal with kids?

My child, who usually doesn't focus on eating when we dine out, ate really well on their own here, so the meal finished faster than usual. Come to think of it, all the kids' favorites were on the table: bulgogi, japchae and seaweed soup! For eating out with a child, isn't that a winning combination?

The adults enjoyed the generous Seoul-style bulgogi and the child had a hearty meal of their favorite sides, so the whole family was happy with the dinner.

Display of awards by the counter at Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch

On the way out, I noticed awards, certificates and medals displayed by the counter. A "Korean Food Master" (대한민국 한식대가) certificate from the Korean Food Forum caught my eye. You can feel the chef's expertise and pride in Korean food in this place.

We came once with my parents-in-law and this time for the bulgogi my child likes, and both meals were satisfying. Above all, I liked that the Seoul-style bulgogi is tasty without being harsh, and the portions are generous. The side dishes are well put together, and I appreciated that staff cook the bulgogi for you so you can relax. With plenty of parking and a roomy interior, it would suit a visit with kids or with your parents.
