Isu Station BBQ with 1L dongdongju and self-serve ramyeon: Chammak
In short
Chammak Isu Station Branch is a makchang (grilled beef intestine) and pork belly restaurant a 5-minute walk from Isu Station in Dongjak, Seoul. The writer ordered the makchang set for two (pork belly, makchang and shishito peppers) with 1L of dongdongju (unfiltered rice wine), plus self-serve vegetables from the salad bar, self-serve Yeol Ramen and a doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). The makchang was chewy with no off smell and the smoke extraction worked so well that the meal — and the drinking — ran long.

I'd heard a new makchang place near Isu was pretty good, so I got curious and went — and the sides were great, the makchang itself was delicious, there was a wide variety of vegetables at the self-serve bar, and the staff were super friendly. Ended up having a really satisfying meal!

Besides soju and beer, they unusually had 1L dongdongju and 1.7L makgeolli, so I ordered dongdongju as my first drink — and it turns out makchang and dongdongju pair surprisingly well, haha. Ate it up happily!
Where is Chammak Isu Station Branch?
Chammak, the makchang spot in Isu, is about 5 minutes from Isu Station, and there are a lot of good restaurants clustered around here haha.

I went to Chammak, the makchang spot near Sadang/Isu, and the sides were so good I ended up drinking way too much

Chammak in Isu also has great value for money, so it's a good spot for a date too!

I don't think you're supposed to smoke here... haha. That little guy in the circle I love him.
Inside Chammak: smoke extraction that keeps the air clean
The most important thing when picking a BBQ place is whether the smoke gets sucked up properly — and Chammak in Isu ventilates really well, so I could eat comfortably without getting smoked out... T_T

I visited during an off-peak hour, but people kept coming in nonstop, which surprised me haha.

Lots of families come here too, and the crowd spans all ages, so I think this is going to become known as THE makchang spot in Isu soon haha.
Chammak's sides, and the free self-serve ramyeon
At Chammak you can boil your own ramyeon (instant noodles) yourself to go with the makchang, which is such a charming touch haha. The table next to us was a family out for dinner, and it was so cute watching what looked like middle schoolers polish off two bowls of ramyeon haha.

There are three kinds of ramyeon — Jin Ramen, Odongtong Myeon, and Yeol Ramen — so you just grab whichever one you want and the staff fill a pot with water for you haha.

What's on Chammak's self-serve vegetable bar
And at the self-serve bar! There's lettuce, napa cabbage, pickled radish, mushrooms, eggplant, and more — all vegetables you can help yourself to. T_T

The vegetables were really fresh, which I loved, and there were side dishes like bean sprout salad and kimchi too... I really hope this place stays in Isu for a long, long time T_T_T_T_T.

And there were sauces too — curry powder, salt, and soybean powder — so you can dip your makchang in whichever suits your taste. Love that T_T

We went with Yeol Ramen and grabbed some green onion from the self-serve bar to add in!

The makchang set for two with 1L dongdongju
We ordered the makchang set for two, which comes with pork belly, makchang, and shishito peppers.

Since it's a makchang place, I didn't expect much from the pork belly, but it was really good too!

And unusually — they had dongdongju, so I ordered it... turns out makchang and dongdongju really do go well together, great combo haha.

They grilled the vegetables and makchang together on the pan for us...

A true grilling master cooked it for us, so we got to enjoy it fully.

The makchang was chewy and had no unpleasant smell at all, and leaving it on that pan a bit longer made it even crispier and chewier — so good haha.
How was Chammak's doenjang jjigae?
I said I wanted doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) instead of just ramyeon broth, so we ordered it~~~

It had this earthy, countryside-doenjang kind of flavor that made it really delicious! The broth was so rich and deep, loved it T_T. With sides like kimchi jjigae, steamed egg, doenjang jjigae, and naengmyeon available, this is a great Isu Station restaurant for fully enjoying makchang and grilled meat!
Is Chammak Isu Station Branch worth a visit?
Chammak, the new spot in Sadong/Isu, is great for family dinners and also SO great as a date spot in Sadang — the makchang itself was delicious, and since they also sell pork belly, it works well as a general BBQ restaurant near Isu Station too. The side dishes are great, but with the self-serve ramyeon and self-serve bar you can enjoy the makchang in even more varied combinations, so I recommend it! The staff were genuinely kind and the makchang was so good that I think I'll be back whenever I'm craving makchang in Isu!
