The temperature swings lately are big and my energy keeps dropping, so when I went to Icheon I wanted something restorative for dinner. That's how I ended up at Baekonjeong Yeomso (백온정 염소), known for proper health food.
I'm sensitive to gamey smells, so I get really picky whenever I try a restorative dish. This time, though, Baekonjeong Yeomso was far better than I expected. I was completely satisfied.
Baekonjeong Yeomso location, opening hours and parking
Baekonjeong Yeomso is at 215 Jungsin-ro, 1st floor, Icheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. It is open every day from 10:00 to 21:00, with last order at 20:30.

There's a private parking lot in front of the restaurant. It's spacious, so even beginner drivers can park comfortably.

A modern goat soup restaurant, not an old-school eatery
The exterior was neat and clean from the start. When you hear "health-food restaurant," you tend to picture an old place showing its age, but Baekonjeong is so modern and tidy that I felt like I'd walked into a refined Korean set-meal restaurant or a café.

Inside, the bright, warm wood-toned interior stood out. Everything from the floor to the tables was kept clean, and with 4-seat and 6-seat tables, the hall is comfortable enough for group gatherings or for bringing your parents.

What comes with the goat soup set for two at Baekonjeong Yeomso?
After sitting down and looking over the menu, I ordered the goat soup set (yeomso-tang jeongsik) for two, which you could call Baekonjeong's signature.

After ordering, I looked around and spotted a display of 16 medicinal herbs and tips on how to enjoy goat soup even more. My excitement was sky-high before I'd even taken a bite.

Side dishes and complimentary warm goat extract
The kimchi, kkakdugi (radish kimchi) and pickles served as side dishes stayed nicely crunchy. What was unusual was that piping hot goat broth (yeomso-jeup) came out with them. With my condition up and down in this changing season, drinking it should help restore some energy, right?

The set came with goat soup, whose rich, deep broth is the highlight, plus goat muchim (seasoned goat meat salad) and pot rice, which go well with it.
Goat soup broth and meat with no gamey smell
The goat soup arrives bubbling in a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot). I swallowed a spoonful of broth, and it felt deep and heavy, as if simmered for a long time. As it went down, the warmth seemed to reach deep inside my body.

It was also packed with ingredients. Every spoonful came up loaded with meat and garlic chives, so I could feel the owner's generosity. I scooped a big spoonful of rice into the soup and ate it, and honestly it felt like a tonic in itself.

How to eat goat soup with perilla sauce, vinegar and ginger
I dipped the goat meat in the perilla (deulkkae) sauce served alongside, and it had no gamey smell at all. The chewy-yet-tender meat was so good. It had the softness and clean taste of fresh meat, and the gentle chew was a work of art. Personally, I added a little vinegar and ginger to the sauce, and it turned out to be a surprisingly nice treat.

Is Baekonjeong Yeomso's goat muchim good for first-timers?
Next up was the goat muchim. I'd never had goat muchim before Baekonjeong, so I was really curious how it would be, and you should definitely try it together with the soup! The combination of garlic chives, perilla leaves, goat meat with no gamey smell, and the seasoning was great. Even someone as fussy about meat as me was very satisfied.

Finishing the pot rice with sungnyung (scorched-rice tea)
After finishing the pot rice, the last thing is sungnyung (nurungji tea, scorched-rice water), nutty and delicious, right? Slurping it down cleaned up my mouth and left my stomach feeling full and settled.

Can you buy takeout, meal kits and goat extract at Baekonjeong Yeomso?
Baekonjeong also sells takeout, frozen meal kits and goat broth, which make good gifts. It would be nice to pick some up on your way home after the meal.

There's candy at the counter, and coffee and drinks are set out by the entrance, so they make a nice after-meal treat!
Is Baekonjeong Yeomso good for a restorative family dinner?
Thanks to the rich but never harsh, deeply flavored dishes, by the time I left I felt warmth all through my body and a surge of energy. It had all three: a neat presentation, a comfortable atmosphere, and flavors anyone can enjoy without a love-it-or-hate-it divide.
If you want to treat your loved ones or parents to a healthy, special meal, I hope you'll visit Baekonjeong Yeomso in Icheon. Fill yourself with energy with a heartfelt health-food table!
