Danyang bakery when garlic bread sells out: Black Garlic Salt Bread

In short

Black Garlic Salt Bread (흑마늘소금빵) is a salt bread bakery inside Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, opened by the young garlic researchers behind Danbbang Bakery. After Danyang's famous garlic bread sold out early, the blogger bought Set 1 (4 original salt breads) and Set 2 (2 original, 1 garlic, 1 black garlic) and ate them back at their lodging. Verdict: the deep, savory black garlic salt bread at Black Garlic Salt Bread is no mere garlic bread substitute but a best-ever salt bread.

Black Garlic Salt Bread (흑마늘소금빵), a salt bread bakery in Danyang

Why I went looking for salt bread in Danyang's Gugyeong Market

If you come to Danyang, Gugyeong Market (구경시장) is a must-visit stop.

View of Danyang Gugyeong Market, a must-visit on a Danyang trip

There are a few foods you have to try at Gugyeong Market, like dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) and garlic bread. And right now there's one more must-try that's getting really hot: salt bread.

Honestly, I had come for the famous garlic bread too. The most famous Danyang garlic bread comes from Danbbang Bakery (단빵제빵소).

I went full of excitement, but sadly it had already closed early because of selling out. I did get there a bit late, too.

Notice that Danbbang Bakery closed early after selling out

Then I happened to spot Black Garlic Salt Bread right nearby. It turns out the young people who made Danbbang Bakery, who have researched garlic for a long time, are behind it. So somehow I trusted it. I only ate it instead of garlic bread, but next time I visit Gugyeong Market I'll come just for the black garlic salt bread. Here's my honest review of this Danyang salt bread bakery.

Location and atmosphere of Black Garlic Salt Bread

Of course it's inside Danyang Gugyeong Market. The market isn't big, so it's easy to find. Walk about 20 seconds from the Danbbang Bakery toward the entrance and you're there. I tried several times to photograph the outside with nobody in it, but there was never a moment without people.

I eat salt bread pretty often, but black garlic salt bread is a first for me. I'm so excited.

Text introducing black garlic salt aged for 20 days

The black garlic is cooked down for a full 15 hours, and the black garlic salt is aged for 20 days. You can tell how much care goes into it.

Sign about the made-and-sold-same-day rule

The rule is made and sold the same day. The dough is made daily, and no preservatives, colorants or chemical additives are used. It's on a different level from the salt bread at Paris Baguette. This was before I'd tasted it, and as a bread lover I was so excited. One thing is certain: this is a great salt bread bakery in Danyang.

Right behind the shop is the black garlic aging room. It's fascinating and impressive.

How I chose Set 1 and Set 2

Then the dilemma started: what to buy, and how? There are 4 kinds: original, garlic, black garlic and streusel (sobo-ro). I wanted to try all four, of course, but the streusel was sold out.

Buying a set is a little cheaper. There are 4 sets in total. I can't say one set is better than another; it really comes down to personal taste.

I ordered two: Set 1 with 4 originals, and Set 2 with 2 originals, 1 garlic and 1 black garlic. The packaging was neat and easy to carry, which I liked.

Original, garlic and black garlic, eaten at the lodging

I ate them as soon as I got to the lodging. They were still warm.

Warm salt bread opened at the lodging

I started with the most basic one, the original salt bread. It's definitely different from the salt bread I usually eat. The inside is moist and properly chewy. The more you chew, the nuttier it gets in your mouth, and with the salty salt it's a perfect sweet-and-salty combo.

Inside of the original salt bread

Next, the garlic salt bread. Made by the garlic-researching young people behind Danbbang Bakery, so how could it not be good? It has a subtle, sweet garlic flavor. Was garlic seasoning always this sweet? It can stand in for garlic bread.

Last, the signature black garlic salt bread. This one is a real treat among treats. The deep, rich savoriness and the healthy kind of sweetness unique to black garlic blend with the nutty bread for a refined taste. I wish I'd bought more black garlic salt bread. This is a great salt bread bakery in Danyang.

I went as a substitute because I missed out on garlic bread at Gugyeong Market, but I came away having met the best salt bread of my life. Beyond the crisp, moist basic texture, the distinctive combination using Danyang garlic and black garlic is really appealing. If you visit Gugyeong Market on a Danyang trip, don't forget to try one of each here along with the garlic bread. If you love bread, you won't regret it. That's the end of my honest review of Black Garlic Salt Bread.

Parking and opening hours

If you come by car, use the ground-level lot or the riverside lot right in front of Gugyeong Market.

There's plenty of space, so no need to worry about parking. It's a large free lot, so no parking fees, and you can walk around the market too, which I liked. Hours are 10:00-20:00, closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
