Today I want to share a very romantic, special date from a rare weekday afternoon half-day off. These days weekends are so crowded everywhere that you can hardly have a proper conversation. So for once, my partner and I met on a weekday and decided to spend time somewhere quiet and serene near the Bukchon Hanok Village.
We wondered what special activity to try, and decided to make our own perfume, something we're both into. After some frantic searching, we found a unique perfume workshop that reimagines Korean nature and aesthetics in a modern way! It's Muhwawon (무화원), near Changdeokgung. We came away totally satisfied with this weekday-afternoon perfume class for two, so let me walk you through it in detail!
What's the atmosphere like at Muhwawon in Bukchon on a weekday afternoon?

Unlike weekends, Bukchon on a weekday afternoon is calm and quiet, and just walking the alleys to the workshop is healing. Weekends are always packed with tourists from home and abroad, but on weekday afternoons its serene charm is fully alive. After wandering the alleys, we arrived at Muhwawon, whose exterior already felt stylish and cozy.
Unlike run-of-the-mill franchises or busy downtown class studios, I loved the private space designed for quiet focus. Muhwawon is already a well-regarded perfume workshop in Seoul, and apparently a word-of-mouth Bukchon date spot among couples.

It looked great for couples making memories like us, and just as good for making a heartfelt gift for friends or family. The moment we stepped in, a subtle, elegant scent wrapped around us, our senses woke up, and the stress seemed to melt away.

How is Muhwawon different from other perfume workshops in Seoul?

Muhwawon is an atelier that delicately and modernly interprets scent materials inspired by Korean nature and culture: hanji (traditional paper), temples, traditional herbs and wild flowers. Out of all the perfume workshops in Seoul, the deciding reason we chose it was this range of scents and its distinctive concept.
It was really appealing that we could make our own signature perfume based on soothing, natural scents rather than the artificial, typical industrial perfumes we always smell.

The workshop interior also mixed Eastern aesthetics and modern trendiness in a very classy way. Seeing the neatly arranged dropper bottles and scent guidebooks on each table made my heart race like I'd become a perfumer. Since it was a quiet weekday afternoon, we could enjoy the whole space cozily and relax into the class.
How does the 2-person perfume-making experience at Muhwawon work?

We booked the 2-person perfume-making experience and visited. Once you sit down, a kind instructor walks you through the basics of perfumery step by step.

Rather than listing difficult theory, the instructor explained the characteristics of the ingredients and the nature of top, middle and base notes in an easy-to-absorb way, so even beginners can follow along.
① Exploring your own taste (scent testing)

After the explanation, you smell dozens of single scent materials one by one. Every time I put scent on a blotter and held it to my nose, my eyes lit up. There was a really varied selection, from warm woody notes to dewy wildflower scents and cozy musk.
Among them, the original Korean ingredient scents that carry Muhwawon's identity were so classy they made me gasp. It was a useful time to reflect deeply on which scent families I usually prefer.
② Designing your own secret formula

Once each of you has picked your favorite scents, the real blending begins to find your signature ratio. You put a beaker on a precise scale and blend while counting drops.
This is where the charm of the 2-person experience really shows! You can keep talking, picking accords (harmonies of scent) that suit each other's blotters, with things like "This warm mood suits you" or "A fresh grassy scent is so you." Precious conversations getting to know each other better flow naturally, so I thought it was a perfect Bukchon date course.
③ Delicate blending and completion
We mixed drop by drop with the dropper, and when the perfume was done and I smelled the final blend in the beaker, it felt like a one-of-a-kind "work of art of our own" had been born. Warm weekday afternoon sunlight seeped through the window into the studio, and that atmosphere itself became a movie-like memory.
How is the finished perfume packaged?
When blending is done, they carefully fill it into a classy Muhwawon bottle. Add the label sticker and it looks as polished and pretty as a luxury niche perfume brand sold in stores.
All around the workshop there are various photo spots set up to photograph your finished work in a moody way. We took a solo shot of the package, then a couple's photo with our two finished perfumes side by side, and the photos came out so atmospheric that we uploaded them to social media right away.
Holding the finished perfume in its lovingly made package box, I felt proud and deeply moved, as if we had given each other a one-of-a-kind scent.
Why I recommend Muhwawon as a weekday-afternoon date

Muhwawon was more than a one-day class; it was a precious pause in a tiring routine. If you want to escape the stale café-and-cinema route for an upcoming weekend or special day and truly connect, I don't think there's a better place.
I especially recommend taking a day off or half-day and visiting on a weekday. Walking the calm, quiet Bukchon alleys and focusing wholly on your partner makes for the best healing experience.
- A rare chance to express Korean natural scents in your own style
- Stylish, tasteful interior and a private class
- Luxurious packaging that fully reflects the maker's taste
After blending, you can walk to nearby Samcheong-dong, the Changdeokgung stone-wall road or Seosunra-gil for a stroll and a good dinner, which makes for a superb route.
Wrapping up

This weekend or on a coming weekday afternoon, why not hold your partner's hand and head to Muhwawon, the Bukchon perfume workshop and the best Bukchon date course of your life?
The special scent you design and refine for each other will help you remember that precious weekday afternoon, fragrant and clear, forever. I paid myself (no sponsorship) and was 100% satisfied with this fragrant perfume class date in Jongno.
