Pork BBQ by Danggok Station: odol galbi + cold noodles at Sillim Hwaro

In short

Sillim Hwaro (신림화로) is a pre-grilled pork BBQ restaurant on Bongcheon-ro in Gwanak, Seoul, near Exit 1 of Danggok Station. The writer ordered the 510g grill set for 2 (pork belly, pork neck and odol galbi) with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and mulnaengmyeon (cold noodles in broth). The juicy pre-grilled meat and the odol galbi with cold noodles stood out, though the stew was a little salty. Verdict: Sillim Hwaro is a pork belly spot a Sillim local recommends with confidence.

Every summer I get strangely obsessed with greasy meat.. is it just me? I got a discount from Sillim Hwaro (신림화로) and finally went! I'd walked past it before and seen people happily eating by the window and thought, I have to try this place,, haha

Where is Sillim Hwaro? How far from Danggok Station?

Sillim Hwaro is at 278 Bongcheon-ro, 1st floor, Gwanak-gu, Seoul. It's under 500m (I think?) on foot from Exit 1 of Danggok Station.

I got there just as I was starting to break a sweat walking from Danggok Station. The outside looks really clean, right?

Sillim Hwaro lunch special and watermelon hwachae

Sillim Hwaro runs a lunch special, and the price blew my mind.. a price that doesn't belong in today's cost of living.. if it were near my workplace I'd go every single day!!!!

Oh, and if you're eating meat, don't forget to have the watermelon hwachae (fruit punch) for dessert! Sadly we were too full to eat it.. I regret not having it so much T_T

Spacious seating and pre-grilling area inside Sillim Hwaro

Inside Sillim Hwaro: can you bring a big group?

The inside is bigger than I expected, so groups are fine! There's also a trustworthy country-of-origin board. In the middle of the room there seems to be the space where they pre-grill the meat. A yummy smell keeps drifting over from there lol

Our seat was at the inner window side. I'd booked through Naver Reservation and was greeted by this cute reservation sign. The owner's handwriting is like mine~ so thoughtful, thank you><

Drinks. I'm a grown-up so I wanted alcohol with the meat, but sadly I wasn't feeling well, so I ordered a soft drink,, the sides all look delicious too (drool). Small-appetite tears TT

What we ordered for 2 people

  • 510g grill set for 2 (pork belly + pork neck + odol galbi)
  • Doenjang stew (soybean paste stew)
  • Mulnaengmyeon (cold noodles)
  • Rice
  • A drink

That's what we ordered. Quite a lot, haha

Side dishes at Sillim Hwaro: muksabal and scallion kimchi

Sillim Hwaro serves muksabal (chilled acorn jelly soup) along with the basic side dishes. My boyfriend said the muksabal here is super tasty, the best. Personally I thought the scallion kimchi (pa-kimchi) was crazy good.. it tasted like my mom made it ( ˶˙🐽˙˵ ᐡ )

Sillim Hwaro grill set for 2: how does the pre-grilled meat taste?

Here comes the piping hot grill~ While you zone out staring at the fire, they bring the meat over haha. Look at that gorgeous sight,,, I'm drooling even while writing this post.. Aren't the colorful vegetable skewers cute? The owner's touch, I totally approve.

Sillim Hwaro grill set for 2 with vegetable skewers

The meat at Sillim Hwaro comes pre-grilled. Maybe because of that, it gets golden and finishes cooking quickly, and I'm not exaggerating, it's really, truly delicious.*✧⁺˚⁺ପ(๑・ω・)੭ु Bite into it and the juices burst out.

I don't know if you can order extra vegetable skewers, but if you're a couple, friends or a group with vegetable lovers? If extras are possible, you absolutely must add them. Luckily(?) my boyfriend doesn't like vegetables, so they're all mine~~

Odol galbi with cold noodles

Of the whole grill set, the odol galbi (crunchy pork rib meat) was the real kick. You absolutely, absolutely have to eat it with the cold noodles.. it beats yukssam naengmyeon (a meat-wrapped cold noodle dish) hands down. It has a crunchy bite but isn't too hard, with a sweet, tender swallow. Hallelujah~

The downside: the doenjang stew

If I had to name a downside at Sillim Hwaro, personally it was the doenjang stew. I like doenjang stew with lots of broth, but this one was more of a jjageuri style (thick and reduced), so it felt a bit salty.

How to enjoy the review-event pork rinds

The pork rinds I got for the review event were a great dessert!!!! A tip: grill the rinds until quite crispy, then dip them in both the injeolmi (roasted rice cake) powder and the honey? syrup? they give you. Pure heaven.

The pork rinds are super hot, so blow on them for a long time before eating. Otherwise you'll burn your tongue.

Today was Sillim Hwaro, a great pork BBQ spot. Sponsorship aside, as a Sillim resident in Gwanak-gu I can proudly say it's a place I strongly recommend! ( ੭ ˙🐽˙ )੭
