Hongcheon hanok bakery café with salt bread and tissue bread: Gil151

In short

Gil151 Hanok Cafe (길151 한옥카페) is a 1,800-pyeong hanok bakery café in Nam-myeon, Hongcheon, Gangwon. Expecting little from such a big café, the writer still loaded up on salt bread, tissue bread, cheese long sausage bread and pain suisse right after lunch, was surprised by how good the coffee was, and met two yard cats named Caramel and Latte. Gil151 Hanok Cafe is not just big: its bread and coffee make it a rest stop worth recommending on a Hongcheon trip.

Gil151 Hanok Cafe: a huge café with great bread and coffee too?

Gil151 Hanok Cafe is a big hanok (traditional Korean house) café in Hongcheon, Gangwon, and both the coffee and the bread were delicious. I went on a trip to Hongcheon a little while ago, heard there was a famous hanok café nearby, and had to check it out!

Honestly, at big cafés the space is often gorgeous but the coffee and bread are a bit disappointing. So I went with no big expectations, and Gil151 turned out to be the real deal!! The coffee was great and the bread was out-of-this-world good!! haha The moment I ate, my mood lifted and I got weirdly excited, so let me tell you about it :)

  • Said to be the largest hanok café in Korea at 1,800 pyeong, built only with Korean red pine
  • A variety of bakery desserts, including handmade cakes and breads
  • Free parking available

Gil151 is in Nam-myeon, Hongcheon, and the parking lot is huge, so no parking worries at all! I just put it into the GPS and found it easily. From the entrance you can already see several hanok buildings, and they looked grand and impressive haha

The garden between the hanoks and the terrace seats

There are several hanok buildings with a wide garden in the middle. On a nice day the terrace seats would be wonderful too. It had the perfect vibe for a cup of coffee in the sunshine :)

Is the seating inside okay for groups at Gil151 Hanok Cafe?

Inside, there is plenty of floor seating and regular tables, so even a big group looked like no problem. The interior is spacious and beautiful too! You can see the hanok roof-tile structure right from the ceiling, and in person it looks amazing haha It's a view you rarely get in a café, so I kept staring up at it for a while.

There was a floor-seating area and lots of regular tables. The inside felt comfortable, and the seats were fairly well spaced.

What happened in front of the bread display at Gil151

Looking at the bread display, everything looked so delicious 🤤 I originally planned to have just a quick coffee, but when I came to my senses, my tray was piled high with bread haha

This looks good, huh? Oh, I want to try that too? And before I knew it I was picking one of each kind lol

How were the salt bread, tissue bread, cheese long sausage bread and pain suisse?

I picked salt bread, tissue bread, cheese long sausage bread and pain suisse (a Swiss-style chocolate custard bun), basically swept up everything on the shelf lol I had definitely just eaten lunch and was full, yet the bread was so good that it kept going in! haha

The coffee was delicious too and went well with the bread. It's usually hard for a big café to get the coffee right as well, but Gil151 does coffee well too!

The salt bread and pain suisse were textbook crispy outside, moist inside, and the tissue bread was fun to peel apart layer by layer and so tasty that I kept eating it haha

Caramel and Latte, the cats in the yard at Gil151 Hanok Cafe

Outside the café there were two cats named Caramel and Latte. After enjoying the bread and coffee I was so full that I thought I'd take a short walk, and while looking around outside there were two ridiculously cute kitties.

There were name tags on their collars, and one was Caramel and the other was Latte. Caramel + Latte = caramel latte!!! lol So cute. Wait, who came up with those names? They're too cute T_T Thanks to them I left feeling good right to the very end 🐱🧡
