Hwangnidang-gil fruit sando bigger than Hanjeongseon: Tareudang
In short
Tareudang is a takeout-only fruit sando and giant mochi dessert shop on the main street of Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. The writer bought peach yogurt chapssaltteok (glutinous rice cake), gold kiwi chapssaltteok, fig yogurt mochi and an egg tart and ate them right on the street, and every piece was packed with whole fruit. Having also tried the much-hyped Hanjeongseon mochi, the writer rates Tareudang's Hwangnam giant mochi a step above.

These days, if you ask what's the hottest dessert, everyone shouts hanjeongseon! Fruit chapssaltteok (glutinous rice cake mochi) is having a real moment. I've tried hanjeongseon, and I've also tried Tareudang, a Hwangnidang-gil favorite in Gyeongju that sells fruit sando — and here's my honest, vivid verdict: Tareudang's Hwangnam mochi beats hanjeongseon.
Where is Tareudang on Hwangnidang-gil?

Tareudang sits at 49 Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju, right on the main street of Hwangnidang-gil, so it's easy to find. There are tons of good restaurants and dessert cafés on Hwangnidang-gil, but as a takeout-only spot, Tareudang doesn't have the long waits some of the others do — while the taste is absolutely top-tier. There's no big sign, so look for the standing sign out front. Just picture it as the dessert shop next to Onsen.
How big is Tareudang's Hwangnam giant mochi?

Tareudang, the fruit sando spot on Hwangnidang-gil, is called 'giant mochi' because it's overwhelmingly bigger than other fruit mochi out there. They were busy wrapping up orders, so I snapped a photo of the chapssaltteok mid-packing — haha!
Tareudang's menu: no out-of-season fruit mochi

Besides the fruit sando that made Hwangnidang-gil famous, the menu also has egg tarts, mochi, gotgam sando (dried persimmon sando) and more. The gotgam sando varieties were nearly all sold out, and among the mochi, strawberry and tangerine weren't being sold since they're out of season. Still, the peach yogurt chapssaltteok I'd been dying to try was there, along with mango yogurt chapssaltteok, fig yogurt chapssaltteok, and other must-try items — so I stood there agonizing over the choice while I waited, then finally ordered.
How to store Tareudang's fruit mochi

Tareudang recommends about 30 minutes at room temperature, and 2–3 hours if you use cold packing. Same-day refrigeration is fine, and same-day eating is recommended. Freezing isn't recommended, so I'd suggest buying only as much as you can finish the day you buy it!
Hanji wrapping that looks like a gift set

The cute fruit mochi comes wrapped in hanji (traditional Korean paper), which is adorable. Do you know 'jipjeongseon,' the bit from the comedy channel Chimchakman? He did a hanjeongseon review, and wrapped up like this, it really does look just like a full-on hanjeongseon, lol. But honestly, this giant mochi is even harder to find than hanjeongseon since it only exists in Gyeongju, so there's no way I wasn't going to eat it, haha!

On top of that, the egg tart looked so tempting that I ended up buying one of those too.

The cute wrapping is great for a proof-of-visit photo too, honestly.
How the peach, gold kiwi and fig yogurt mochi taste

I meant to eat it once I got home, but I couldn't resist and ended up eating it right there on the street. The peach yogurt chapssaltteok was overwhelmingly big to begin with, and inside, the peach was packed in with zero gaps. The fruit itself is genuinely big, delicious, sweet — amazing, truly.

The gold kiwi chapssaltteok also had a thick rice-cake skin, but it never felt heavy or sickening, and a whole gold kiwi is stuffed inside — the visual made it crystal clear why they call it giant mochi. And the taste is just so good; the combination of yogurt, fruit, and chapssaltteok is amazing. The fruit itself is so delicious there was no way it could taste bad, and taking a big bite gave me that happy-taste feeling that makes you want to do a little dance — certified delicious.

The fig yogurt mochi was the only one I could cut with a knife to show the cross-section! You can see how big the fig is, right? Layers of chapssaltteok and yogurt are packed in and it's so good, sob. When you're touring Gyeongju and your energy dips, taking a big bite of this sends your happiness levels right back up, sob.
Tareudang, the fruit sando spot everyone raves about on Hwangnidang-gil, sticks to making everything fresh every morning and selling it the same day — fruit, gotgam sando (dried persimmon sando), all of it — so you can trust what you're eating. The gotgam sando even comes in pretty packaging that makes it a great gift, and it tastes great too. If you're heading to Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, I'd strongly recommend trying at least one item here — it's a must.
