What is Orot Silbi, a date-night izakaya near Gongdeok and Mapo Station?
Orot Silbi (오롯실비) is an izakaya close to both Gongdeok Station and Mapo Station, and it's often recommended for dates and blind dates. I had a dinner plan in Gongdeok, went looking for a place, and found Orot Silbi, known as an izakaya with a nice mood. It's easy to get to and often recommended for dates and blind dates, so I went in with high hopes.

What are the bar seats at Orot Silbi like?
The space stood out for its soft lighting and wood-tone interior, and we sat at the bar. It felt comfortable and stylish at the same time. From the bar you can watch the staff prepare the food, so the wait was never boring, and I was happy to feel that izakaya atmosphere up close.

If you're looking for a good bar in Gongdeok, I think these bar seats are worth trying once.

Orot Silbi set for two: sashimi and black pepper seafood stir-fry
This time we ordered the set for two, which included sashimi and black pepper seafood stir-fry (kaisen). It had good variety and was a perfect match for drinks.
Sashimi: fresh and nicely thick
The sashimi in the set looked clean and neat from the plating on. Several kinds of fish came arranged tidily, and each piece had a great texture and tasted fresh. They were cut to a good thickness, so they were satisfying to chew, and with soy sauce and wasabi they were even better.

The accompaniments served alongside went well with it and were nice to nibble on between bites, and I could fully taste the fish itself. Slowly enjoying it with a drink was really satisfying.

Black pepper seafood stir-fry: subtle pepper aroma and smoky wok flavor
Next came the black pepper seafood stir-fry, which, as the name says, had a subtle pepper aroma. It was generously loaded with seafood, and the smoky wok flavor plus the black pepper gave it great savory depth. It wasn't harsh, yet you kept reaching for more, a different charm from the sashimi.

The seafood kept its texture, so it was fun to chew, and it blended well with the other ingredients. Going from mild sashimi to a bite of the stir-fry felt like switching the mood, so I never got tired of it and enjoyed it to the end.

Jim Beam highball or soju: which drink paired better?
For drinks we ordered a Jim Beam highball and soju. The highball was refreshingly fizzy with a whiskey aroma that wasn't overpowering, so it went well with the food. With the sashimi it cleaned the palate nicely, and it paired well with the black pepper seafood stir-fry too.

Partway through we had soju too, and of course soju goes well with sashimi and seafood dishes. The menu is full of food made for drinking, so the glasses just kept coming.

How was the service at Orot Silbi?
The staff noticed what we needed before we asked and explained the food kindly, so even on a first visit I felt at ease. At the bar we were close to the staff, but the service never felt pushy, which made the evening even more pleasant.

Is Orot Silbi a good spot for a blind date or date night?
The overall mood is pleasantly lively rather than rowdy, so it was easy to talk. I could see why it's so often recommended for dates and blind dates. Plenty of the guests were couples or small groups, and everyone seemed to be eating comfortably.

Orot Silbi location and how to get there
Orot Silbi is close to both Gongdeok Station and Mapo Station, so it works well as a meeting spot, and it's near Gyeongui Line Forest Park, which makes it a decent location for a walk after eating. With such easy access, it's no trouble to stop by for a casual drink after work.

Wrap-up: a Gongdeok izakaya worth a return visit
Overall I was happy with everything: the food, the mood and the service. The sashimi and the black pepper seafood stir-fry each had a clear charm, and adding the Jim Beam highball and soju made it even more fun.

Next time I'd like to try the seasonal dishes and other snacks too. If you're after a good izakaya in Gongdeok, or can't decide where to go for a date or blind date, this is a place I'd recommend at least once. The well-made food and relaxed mood make this a visit I'll remember for a long time.
