Konkuk Univ. soba spot: wasabi soba set before dance practice, Kosi

Kosi Konkuk University Branch is a Japanese restaurant in Gwangjin, Seoul, about a 5-minute walk from Exit 1 of Konkuk Univ. Station, serving house-made udon, soba and tonkatsu. Before dance practice, the writer and a friend had lunch there, ordering tempura bukkake udon, a soba set and an extra tonkatsu for ₩35,500 in total. After many visits, the soba at Kosi Konkuk University Branch is still the dish the writer always ends up ordering again.

Seolleung restaurant pre-movie dinner, spicy cream risotto: Kkuudeok

Kkuudeok Seolleung Main Branch is a Western restaurant in Gangnam, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Seolleung Station Exit 2, where diners grill their own skirt steak on a burner set into the table. For dinner before a movie, two friends ordered the Kkuudeok Set (46,800 won) and added brisket perilla leaf pasta and spicy cream risotto for 1,000 won each, for a total of 48,800 won, and the refillable jar of homemade pickles and five sauces were the highlights. Kkuudeok Seolleung Main Branch suits two people who want to decide how rare the steak stays.

Gwangjin ramen for two at ₩40,000: hormone-don and takoyaki, Mentsuru

Mentsuru Children's Grand Park Branch is a late-night ramen shop in Gwangjin, Seoul, a one-minute walk from Exit 4 of Children's Grand Park Station. Two friends spent 40,000 won in total on tori paitan (rich) at 12,000 won with extra pork belly chashu, hormone-don (beef intestine rice bowl) at 15,000 won with pork belly chashu and egg, and takoyaki 5pc. With yuzu pickled radish and a bowl of rice per person included, Mentsuru is a good place to eat until you're stuffed and talk for hours.

Guui Station Chinese restaurant meat jjamppong set: Hyeongjeae Guui

Hyeongjeae Guui is a Chinese restaurant run by two brothers, a 4-minute walk from Exit 2 of Guui Station in Gwangjin, Seoul. On a return visit with a friend, the writer ordered the ganjjajang + jjamppong + sweet and sour pork lunch set (41,000 won, down to 37,500 won), and the meat jjamppong with beef belly stood out for its chewy noodles and strong smoky wok flavor — the best dish at Hyeongjeae Guui. For a good-value lunch combo near Guui Station, Hyeongjeae Guui is worth going back to.

Guui Station café with mango cake and iced flat white: Center Coffee

Center Coffee Guui East Pole is an open-plan specialty coffee shop on the B1 floor of NC East Pole, right in front of Exit 3 of Guui Station in Gwangjin, Seoul. Dropping by after lunch with a friend, the order came to 19,500 won in total: an iced flat white for 5,500 won, an iced mugwort latte for 6,500 won and the new mango cake for 7,500 won. The mango cake's yogurt-like cream paired well with the fruit, and the high ceilings make Center Coffee feel far more spacious than a basement café usually does.

Konkuk izakaya millefeuille nabe finished with udon noodles: Ito

Ito is an izakaya in Gwangjin, Seoul, a 2-minute walk from Exit 2 of Konkuk University Station. Two friends ordered the Ito Han-sang set (assorted sashimi plus millefeuille nabe) for 63,000 won, added udon noodles for 2,000 won and shared a draft Kelly beer and a Coke Zero, spending 72,500 won in total. The portions were just right for two, and finishing the millefeuille nabe broth with udon noodles was the best decision of the night.
