In short

Kosi Konkuk University Branch is a Japanese restaurant in Gwangjin, Seoul, about a 5-minute walk from Exit 1 of Konkuk Univ. Station, serving house-made udon, soba and tonkatsu. Before dance practice, the writer and a friend had lunch there, ordering tempura bukkake udon, a soba set and an extra tonkatsu for ₩35,500 in total. After many visits, the soba at Kosi Konkuk University Branch is still the dish the writer always ends up ordering again.

Kosi Konkuk University Branch is a Japanese restaurant in Konkuk Univ. serving house-made udon, soba and tonkatsu. My friend and I were on our 5th dance practice session together. This time we decided to meet up, have lunch first, load up on caffeine, and then practice. For lunch I picked Kosi, a Konkuk Univ. favorite I've been to n times now.

You order through a table tablet, but the menu is hard to read on the screen, so I'm attaching the menu from the entrance instead.

Notice about Kosi's house-made udon noodles

Why is the udon at Kosi so good?

Kosi's udon is house-made from just three ingredients: salt, water and flour. Here's how the shop describes it.

House-made noodles. Noodles made from just three ingredients, salt, water and flour, in which you can feel the care of human hands. The udon dough is trodden and kneaded, then aged for two days or more. Because dough is affected by weather, temperature and humidity, it needs careful attention every day. The dough, made with time and care, is stretched, cut and boiled right in the kitchen to become a first-rate bowl of udon.

I came a little after lunchtime and customers kept coming in anyway. No wonder it's such a famous Konkuk Univ. spot. The kitchen is open, so you can watch the cooking. Every time I visit I notice again how spotless the place is.

What two of us ordered at Kosi and what it cost

For the two of us: tempura bukkake udon, a soba set, an extra tonkatsu and 2 cans of zero cola, ₩35,500 in total. Everything looked so good that choosing was hard, but since it's summer we went with cold udon and soba.

  • Tempura bukkake udon ₩11,000
  • Soba set ₩14,500
  • Extra tonkatsu ₩6,000
  • Zero cola ₩2,000 × 2 cans
  • Total ₩35,500

Anyone here like figures?

Every table has extra seasonings. If you ask, they'll bring you an apron.

Our ordered dishes from Kosi laid out on the table

The dishes were so generous my eyes went wide. Neat, and the set is solid.

How are the noodles in the cold tempura bukkake udon?

My friend's tempura bukkake udon (₩11,000) is springy cold udon where you pour the sauce on to taste. In summer, cold udon beats hot udon, right?

You pour the cold udon sauce over the bouncy noodles as much as you like. My friend started with a bit, said it wasn't salty at all, and ended up pouring in all of it, haha. They said it had a deep bonito flavor.

The noodles are totally alive. My friend told me to try some, and I picked up a single strand, and even that one strand filled my mouth. The springiness was so different from ordinary udon. Next time I'm ordering the tempura bukkake udon too. The portion is huge as well.

Add the yubu chobap (tofu-pouch rice) and you hit max fullness.

Extra tonkatsu at Kosi

Is the ₩6,000 extra tonkatsu worth it?

We shared the extra tonkatsu (₩6,000) with my friend. For ₩6,000, what is this quality?! Crispy and clean-tasting, I kept reaching for it. The breading is no ordinary breading. Tonkatsu sauce is provided.

What comes in the Kosi soba set and how it tastes

The soba set (₩14,500) comes with soba, a salad, basic side dishes, 5 kinds of tempura and yubu chobap. Now, on to my own soba set. The salad and sides are a clean, no-fuss lineup.

Salad and basic side dishes of the Kosi soba set

The soba is every bit as good as the udon noodles. It's why I order soba every time I go to Kosi. Clean is the only word for it.

I stirred in only half the wasabi. Even half, since it's fresh wasabi, it tingled right up my nose! The harmony of noodles and dipping sauce is beautiful. It's the best soba I've ever had. Even when I agonize over the menu, I end up circling back to Kosi's soba.

The set lineup is so good: perilla leaf tempura, sweet pumpkin tempura, 2 shrimp tempura, sweet potato tempura and yubu chobap.

The crunch of the tempura is seriously... I want to record it for ASMR. Kosi is a Konkuk Univ. spot that can make anything.

Notice about the free sweet potato croquette for Sejong University students

If you're a Sejong University student, Kosi gives you a sweet potato croquette. So jealous!!!

Kosi even has candy to freshen your mouth afterwards. I fully recommend it as a Konkuk Univ. udon spot, soba spot and tonkatsu spot!
