Baegyeonhonghwa (백연홍화) is a Hong Kong back-alley-themed Chinese bar on the 2nd floor of Chungmuro 5-gil near Euljiro 3-ga Station in Seoul. The Baegyeonhonghwa entrance and interior feature red lights, signs in Chinese characters and a disco ball, and the meal of lemon beer, oi tangtangi (smashed cucumber salad) and chili shrimp was topped by the chili shrimp. With great atmosphere and food, Baegyeonhonghwa is a Euljiro bar worth recommending for both dates and group gatherings.

Mini Male Coffee Roaster Yeoksam Branch is a roastery café in Gangnam, Seoul, about a 3-minute walk from Yeoksam Station Exit 6. After an eel dinner with a younger sibling, the writer stopped by Mini Male for a second round of a Helsinki latte, fresh tomato juice and two handmade New York cookies, oatmeal raisin and matcha choco, and the matcha choco cookie was the pick of the night. Open until 10pm on weekdays, Mini Male Coffee Roaster is a good spot in Gangnam and Yeoksam for coffee, dessert and a long chat after dinner.

Myeongdong hair salon after-work scalp spa with lymph massage: Yerideu

Yerideu Hair (예리드) is a hair salon in Myeongdong, Seoul, on the 3rd floor of the building next to Hedges, a short walk from Myeongdong Station Exit 9. After work, with a stuffy scalp and frizzy hair, the writer booked the 18-step scalp treatment spa clinic, which ran from scalp diagnosis and deep cleansing through neck and lymph massage, head spa and ampoule to styling. Deli sandwich shop at Seoul Station: rye pastrami for two at Wit&Meat

Wit&Meat Seoul Station is a handmade burger and sandwich shop on the lobby level of Grand Central, near Exit 4 of Seoul Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Two people shared the All Mighty Burger set and the Pastrami Queens, a rye-bread pastrami sandwich, and the writer rated the Pastrami Queens as the tastier of the two. Wit&Meat Seoul Station is a good fit for two people who want to try both a classic handmade burger and a deli sandwich.

Bukchon Korean snack bar after an art show: roe gimbap at Snack Seoul

Snack Seoul is a Korean snack-food (bunsik) bar on the 2nd floor at 46 Palpan-gil in Bukchon, Jongno, Seoul, that serves traditional Korean liquor alongside dishes like tteokbokki and gimbap. After seeing the Damien Hirst exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), the writer ordered green grape and sweet corn slush makgeolli, the signature cheese nurungji (crispy scorched rice) pollack roe tteokbokki, pollack roe egg gamtae (thin seaweed) gimbap and herring roe radish kimchi. Despite early doubts, traditional liquor and Korean snack food paired well at Snack Seoul, making it an easy spot for a casual drink after exploring the alleys of Bukchon and Samcheong-dong.

Bucheon Korean restaurant, gulbi & mackerel with Mom: Gim Myeongju

Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Sinjungdong Branch (김명주뜰안채밥상) is a Korean set-meal restaurant near Sinjungdong Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi. The writer and Mom, who loves traditional Korean set meals, shared one barley gulbi set (dried yellow croaker aged in barley) and one grilled mackerel set. Both enjoyed the cauldron rice made from freshly milled yellow rice, the rich cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) and the private rooms. Even Mom, a picky eater, was the first to suggest coming back, which makes Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang a great Korean restaurant to take your parents to.

Verdict: with floor-to-ceiling sea views and well-spaced tables, Plan A Restaurant suits both a family meal with parents and a date.
