Bulgogi lunch after the Gimcheon zipwire, for 4: Sonamu Sikdang

In short

Sonamu Sikdang Gimcheon Main Branch is a grilled bulgogi restaurant in Apo-eup, Gimcheon, Gyeongbuk. After the Gimcheon zipwire and the Buhang Dam suspension bridge, four of us shared 2 servings of soy-sauce grilled bulgogi and 2 servings of ojam bulgogi (squid and pork), and ordering rice brought doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and side dishes with it. Sonamu Sikdang was full at lunchtime, but the wide parking lot and the hearty full table made it a satisfying lunch stop on a Gimcheon day trip.

After enjoying the zipwire and the suspension bridge in Gimcheon, we headed to Sonamu Sikdang Gimcheon Main Branch (소나무식당 김천본점) for lunch.

It took about 20-30 minutes by car from the attractions to the restaurant. Not super close, but a pleasant drive, and a good place to stop for lunch while touring Gimcheon.

Especially after the zipwire and the suspension bridge, we'd worked up an appetite and wanted something hearty. Four of us visited that day and ordered grilled bulgogi and squid-pork bulgogi to share.

We'd been looking for a good lunch spot in Gimcheon and landed here — when we arrived, it was already packed, being lunchtime.

The place was full when we got there, but we were seated after a short wait.

I'd heard this was a favorite among Gimcheon locals, and visiting in person confirmed it — plenty of people were coming in for lunch, the kind of place that clearly has steady local support.

Wide view of the large parking lot in front of the restaurant

Best of all, the large parking lot right in front made parking easy. Even during lunchtime, there was plenty of space, so we didn't have to worry about bringing a car.

Inside, there are regular tables, plus a space in the back for larger groups to eat together, so it looked like a good spot for family meals or gatherings.

The menu also included a variety of options beyond grilled bulgogi, like squid bulgogi, grilled chicken feet, and grilled deodeok (mountain bellflower root).

What four people ordered: soy-sauce grilled bulgogi x2 and ojam bulgogi x2

With four of us there that day, we split our order between two menu items from Sonamu Sikdang Gimcheon Main Branch: 2 servings of soy grilled bulgogi and 2 servings of squid-pork bulgogi.

Rather than ordering just one dish, we wanted to try different flavors, so this is what we picked. With four people, having both dishes on the table to share worked out well.

The soy grilled bulgogi and squid-pork bulgogi were quite different in flavor direction, so switching between the two kept it from getting repetitive.

The side dishes that come with the meal

Even before the main dishes arrived, Sonamu Sikdang Gimcheon Main Branch set the table with a whole spread of side dishes. Order a bowl of rice and doenjang jjigae comes along with it.

Along with the side dishes, they set out lettuce wraps, garlic, and ssamjang (dipping sauce), which went great with the grilled bulgogi.

With several of us eating together, it was fun trying each side dish one by one.

Ordering a bowl of rice also got us doenjang jjigae, which paired nicely with rice and meat.

The rice, made with Suhyangmi rice, had a nutty aroma and good sheen and stickiness. Warm rice topped with grilled bulgogi went really well together.

With the savory doenjang jjigae on the side too, it made for a hearty bowl of rice.

With such a solid basic spread, this place would suit anyone looking for a good Korean restaurant.

Is the soy-sauce grilled bulgogi mild enough for kids?

The soy grilled bulgogi at Sonamu Sikdang Gimcheon Main Branch isn't harsh in flavor — it leans sweet and savory, so the kids ate it without any fuss. Since our kids don't do well with spicy food, we tried this dish first.

Being grilled over a grate, the meat had a subtle smoky char that I liked. The soy sauce seasoning wasn't too intense either, leaning sweet and

savory, so the kids ate plenty without any complaints. Thanks to that, the rest of us got to eat comfortably too, without worrying about the kids.

The meat was delicious on its own, but wrapping a little rice, the soy grilled bulgogi, and garlic in a lettuce leaf made for a pretty hefty bite.

The natural grilled aroma from cooking over the grate gave it a different charm from regular soy bulgogi. If you like the char of direct-fire grilling, this style of grilled bulgogi would suit your taste well.

These days a lot of people look for menus with that smoky briquette-grill flavor, and this place delivers a subtle smoky char from the grate too — if you like that deep briquette-grilled taste, this should be right up your alley.

Ojam bulgogi: the spicy squid-and-pork dish

Spicy seasoned squid-pork bulgogi

The second dish we tried was squid-pork bulgogi. Stir-fried squid and pork together, it was distinctly different from the soy grilled bulgogi.

The sauce was a bit richer and spicier, which paired well with rice.

You get the chewy texture of squid alongside the tender texture of the meat, which was more interesting than eating just one type of meat.

Dipping into the spicy sauce and eating it with rice, I kept reaching for more.

If the soy grilled bulgogi is on the sweet and mild side, squid-pork bulgogi felt like the punchier, more appetite-driving option.

With four of us there, I was glad we ordered both dishes.

Sonamu Sikdang dining hall full of lunchtime customers

The day we visited, the restaurant was packed from lunchtime onward, with a steady stream of customers coming in.

It made sense why this is known as a favorite among longtime residents of the Apo area in Gimcheon.

In particular, the meal wasn't just meat served alone — it came with several side dishes, doenjang jjigae, and rice, which made for a satisfying lunch overall.

So if you're looking for a good lunch spot in Gimcheon, this style of Korean food is a solid option. It's also a place worth recommending to anyone in Gimcheon looking for a hearty meal with family.

The plum drink served after the meal

Before leaving, we also had a glass of plum drink. It came with slush ice floating on top, looking refreshing just to see, and after a hearty meal it was sweet and cool — a perfect way to cleanse the palate.

After filling up on meat and rice, finishing with a cool plum drink felt like a clean way to wrap up the meal.

Even though it was lunchtime and busy with plenty of other diners, once the food arrived we were able to enjoy the meal comfortably. After the Gimcheon zipwire, this was a pretty satisfying lunch for us.

We visited for lunch after riding the Gimcheon zipwire that day, and the packed dining room was the first thing that stood out.
