Hanwoo BBQ lunch set in a private room in Mapo, Seoul: Moyeon Mapo

In short

Moyeon Mapo (모연 마포본점) is a hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant in the Yonggang-dong area of Mapo, Seoul, where every seat is in a private room. At lunch we had the charcoal-grilled seasoned beef & hotpot rice set at 25,000 won per person for two, plus pyeongyang naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) at 16,000 won, and the staff-grilled charcoal service and the abalone hotpot rice were the highlights. Arriving at noon without a booking can mean a wait of more than 30 minutes, so reserving a room at Moyeon Mapo is the right call.

I went to Moyeon Mapo (모연 마포본점), a Korean BBQ restaurant in Mapo, for a well-priced lunch special. It's popular around the Yonggang-dong area of Mapo as a beef spot and a tidy private-room restaurant. Visiting in person, it turned out to be a room-style restaurant with both reasonable prices and a proper atmosphere for a hanwoo (Korean beef) lunch set.

How long is the lunch wait without a reservation?

I went around noon without a reservation and the place was already fully booked with a wait. Since seating starts at 11:30, I had to wait through a whole turn. I took a number and waited over 30 minutes. It's a popular restaurant, so I'd recommend booking ahead.

24 private rooms: is Moyeon Mapo good for a group dinner in Mapo?

I liked Moyeon Mapo's modern, tidy interior. Every seat is a private room, with 24 rooms total that can hold up to 20 people. It seems like a good option to keep in mind if you're looking for a meeting or company dinner spot in Mapo. There are actually a lot of offices nearby, so it seems well suited as a work dinner venue.

This is room 14, the four-seat room I used. It was a private space where you could enjoy a cozy meal. Unlike a typical BBQ restaurant, it was easy to eat quietly without surrounding noise.

On the table, a menu, hot water, buckwheat tea, and a staff call bell were already set up.

What we ordered from the Moyeon Mapo lunch menu

The great thing about the lunch special is, of course, the value. You can enjoy a special beef lunch at a reasonable price, so I ordered two servings of the ₩25,000 charcoal-grilled seasoned beef set plus the pyeongyang naengmyeon.

First, the basic side dishes arrive — lettuce wraps, sauce, kimchi, and more. The three side dishes and baek-kimchi (white kimchi) came out on individual plates each, which felt clean and organized.

Soon after, the hotpot rice, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), and abalone jang (soy-marinated abalone) filled out a generous table.

Charcoal grilling service done by the staff

The main seasoned beef gets grilled by a staff member thanks to the grilling service, so all you have to do is sit back and eat.

The staff member stir-fried it over strong charcoal heat with quick, practiced hands.

It's sliced thin like bulgogi, so it cooks fast.

The server plated the charcoal-scented meat in a bowl and told us to eat it with yeongyangbuchu (nutrition chives). They also cleared away the charcoal brazier right away, which made for a comfortable setting to dig in properly.

Beef and chives are a great pairing — the chives cut through the meat's richness and add nice texture.

The seasoning isn't strong, just a light basic sauce, so you can really taste the quality of the beef itself — and it was the tender cut I love, which made it even more satisfying.

Grilled beef served alongside doenjang jjigae and side dishes

Doenjang jjigae and meat is a combo that never fails. The side dishes were tasty too, and the stew had good depth of flavor.

Abalone hotpot rice with perilla leaf pesto

The seasoned grilled beef was great, but the hotpot rice was truly the best part. Mixed with butter and abalone jang, the rice just kept going down.

The abalone was cut into easy bites and seasoned just right, not too salty.

Wrapped with the perilla leaf pesto served alongside the side dishes and some gim (seaweed), it had a distinctive taste with the perilla's fragrance spreading through the mouth. It's a flavor I'd never tried before, and finding new combinations like this is part of the fun.

Finishing with pyeongyang naengmyeon, 16,000 won

To finish, the pyeongyang naengmyeon (₩16,000) I've recently gotten into. It's interesting how the taste differs from place to place.

Bowl of pyeongyang naengmyeon with hanwoo broth and pure buckwheat noodles

Made with hanwoo broth and 100% buckwheat noodles, it was mild yet had a flavor that really hit the spot. Surprisingly, the broth had a strong meaty flavor, which suited my palate since I love meaty broths like gomtang (beef bone soup). It also had a refreshing quality that seemed to wash away the richness from the meat — a hidden gem for pyeongyang naengmyeon in Mapo.

Who is the Moyeon Mapo lunch special best for?

If you want both the privacy of a room-style restaurant and good value among Mapo's Korean BBQ spots, Moyeon Mapo's lunch special seems like a great choice. From the hanwoo lunch set in a tidy setting to the deeply flavorful naengmyeon, it was a satisfying Mapo beef restaurant experience. There can be waits during peak hours, so I'd recommend booking ahead and enjoying a relaxed lunch special.
