Yeonnam-dong brunch café for friends: cream tteokbokki at Jam Jam

Jam Jam (JAMJAM) is a dog-friendly brunch café rooted in Australian-style brunch, set in a semi-basement on Seongmisan-ro 29-gil in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo, Seoul. On a visit with friends, the table ordered a donut pancake, cream tteokbokki (rice cakes in a creamy sauce), dutch coffee and an iced Americano, and the donut pancake with Earl Grey jam and the better-than-expected cream tteokbokki were the highlights. With good atmosphere, brunch and coffee all round, Jam Jam is a Yeonnam-dong brunch café worth recommending for a date or a get-together with friends.

Yeouido American-style burger pub for a classic burger: Bass Burger

Bass Burger Yeouido is an American pub-style handmade burger restaurant on basement level 1 of the Yulchon Building, near Yeouido Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. The writer ordered the classic Bass Burger, a side of chili mozzarella cheese bars and the house Bass Lager, and was happy enough to refill the self-serve potato chips more than four times. Bass Burger Yeouido's solid classic burger makes it a dependable choice for an office lunch or a burger-and-beer stop after a date at Han River Park.

Hwaseong City Hall sashimi restaurant, engawa refills: Mulgogijari

Mulgogijari Hwaseong Branch (물고기자리 화성점) is an all-you-can-eat aged sashimi restaurant across from the back gate of Hwaseong City Hall, right next to the Namyang Tunnel in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. Two people had the omakase-style aged sashimi course at ₩40,000 per person with Byeolbit Cheongha (별빛청하) rice wine; the engawa (flounder fin) came out generously, and the refills were nearly as good as the first plate. Mulgogijari Hwaseong Branch changed the writer's view of all-you-can-eat sashimi and is worth recommending to anyone who loves aged sashimi.

Sadang izakaya for a girls' night: apple mango sorbet at Cheonjan

Cheonjan (천잔) is an izakaya (Japanese-style pub) tucked inside the Sadang food alley near Sadang Station in Dongjak, Seoul. Four women walked into Cheonjan around 7 p.m. on a Thursday with no wait and talked for almost 3 hours over stir-fried beef brisket udon, corn pancake, Nagasaki champon, apple mango sorbet and highballs, spending about 130,000 won including drinks. Soft lighting and an in-store restroom made Cheonjan easy to linger in, and the apple mango sorbet alone is reason enough to return for the next Sadang Station get-together.

Sokcho market bakery: kimchi fridge & 2-min microwave, Sokcho Sulppang

Sokcho Sulppang (속초술빵) is a sulppang (makgeolli steamed bread) shop tucked inside Sokcho Jungang Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. The writer bought a sulppang the size of an adult's face for 5,000 won, tasted it at the market, then kept the leftover sulppang in a kimchi fridge for a day and microwaved it for 2 minutes to finish it the next day. Picked instead of the famous queue-out sulppang shops, Sokcho Sulppang held its own on taste, and the reheated bread came back tasting freshly steamed.

Suwon Station restaurant for solo spicy daechang hotpot: Horangigul

Horangigul Timevillas Suwon is a daechang (beef large intestine) hotpot restaurant in the 3rd-floor dining area of Timevillas Suwon, near Suwon Station. On a solo shopping day, the writer had a one-person daechang gopchang hotpot at the spiciest level for dinner, added perilla leaves as the broth reduced, and finished by mixing a bowl of rice into the broth. Horangigul Timevillas Suwon is a satisfying choice for anyone who wants a rich daechang hotpot alone without having to order for two.
