Sokcho market bakery: kimchi fridge & 2-min microwave, Sokcho Sulppang
In short
Sokcho Sulppang (속초술빵) is a sulppang (makgeolli steamed bread) shop tucked inside Sokcho Jungang Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. The writer bought a sulppang the size of an adult's face for 5,000 won, tasted it at the market, then kept the leftover sulppang in a kimchi fridge for a day and microwaved it for 2 minutes to finish it the next day. Picked instead of the famous queue-out sulppang shops, Sokcho Sulppang held its own on taste, and the reheated bread came back tasting freshly steamed.

Why I stopped at Sokcho Sulppang in Sokcho Jungang Market
Sokcho Sulppang (속초술빵) is a well-known sulppang (steamed makgeolli rice wine bread) shop in Sokcho Jungang Market. If you travel to Sokcho, the market is pretty much a must-visit, right?

I bought dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken), wandered around looking at all the food, and finally dropped by Sokcho Sulppang, which is famous among the market's must-eats. Honestly, I used to be the person who thought, "Sulppang? Do I really need it?" haha. But then I tried a sample while passing by, and I instantly understood why everyone buys a bag. 😂
Skipping the famous queue for Sokcho Sulppang: how was the taste?
Sokcho Sulppang is deep inside the market, so it wasn't hard to find, and I could buy right away without queuing. The taste didn't fall behind at all.

The famous sulppang places always have enormous lines, right? I've tried one of those long-queue shops before too. But standing in line eats into precious travel time, so... T_T this time I bought one at Sokcho Sulppang. And... wow...? This is actually really good? haha Honestly, the taste didn't fall behind at all.

If anything, when I think about waiting an hour in line during a trip all the way to Sokcho, Sokcho Sulppang was more than satisfying for me. Sokcho has so much food and so much to see, and it's such a waste to spend all your time in lines. 😂
How much does Sokcho Sulppang cost?
A sulppang the size of an adult's face at Sokcho Sulppang is ₩5,000. The price is a real bargain 💰

The price is so kind! Thinking about bread prices these days, it's really cheap. A loaf this size for five thousand won, no reason not to buy it, right? haha There's quite a lot of it, so it's good to share with the family too.
Free tasting made it even better
At Sokcho Sulppang, the staff offer you a taste of warm sulppang. Steam was rising from the steamer and the smell alone is crazy... *sigh* When I took a bite while it was warm, I understood right away.

The fluffy texture is really good. I thought a bread called sulppang would smell strongly of makgeolli, but there's almost none of that! It's lightly sweet and plain, the kind of taste anyone, young or old, would like.
Now I get why it's a Sokcho Jungang Market favorite 🍞
The sulppang here was fluffy and moist without being too sweet, so you keep reaching for more. I tore off one piece and... huh...? I can keep eating this?.. It's very fluffy and moist, not dry at all, and not overly sweet, so my hand kept going back.

Even though I'd already eaten lots of things at the market since morning, it still went down easily.
How to store leftover sulppang? A kimchi fridge is my pick
There was too much to finish, so I kept the leftover sulppang in the kimchi fridge for a day and ate it the next day, and I was even more surprised 😳 Honestly, sulppang is best eaten the same day. But the portion is quite big, so I couldn't finish it and tried it the next day.

I hadn't put it in the freezer yet, so I kept it in the kimchi fridge for a day.

Personally, kimchi fridge storage felt much better than a regular fridge. The bread seemed to dry out less, so the texture was much better. If you have a kimchi fridge, I recommend storing it there. 👍
How to reheat sulppang: 2 minutes in the microwave and it's almost fresh 🔥
Cut off as much as you'll eat, cover it with a microwave lid, and microwave about 2 minutes, and the stored sulppang tastes almost the same as the day you bought it.

I cut just what I'd eat, covered it with only a microwave lid and microwaved it about 2 minutes... wow... it really tasted like the day I bought it? 😂 The fluffy texture came right back and the moistness was almost the same... wow..

At home I use an IKEA PRICKIG microwave lid (₩1,900). Heating with it on keeps the moisture in, so it came out much moister. It's easier than wrapping in cling film and easy to wash, so lately I use almost only this. haha

Honestly, with my eyes closed I'd believe it just came out of the steamer. So I don't mind at all bringing home several big sulppang. Cut them into portions, keep them in the kimchi fridge, and reheat one at a time, and you can enjoy them for two days!
Looking for a Sokcho Jungang Market favorite? I recommend Sokcho Sulppang!

When you come to Sokcho Jungang Market, dakgangjeong is almost a must, right? But personally I'd love for you to try Sokcho Sulppang too. In particular, I don't think you need to insist on the famous places with huge lines like I used to. I've tried both, and Sokcho Sulppang was plenty delicious and my satisfaction was really high. If anything, saving travel time to eat one more thing seemed like a much better deal. 😂
If you're going to Sokcho, do stop by Sokcho Sulppang as one of the market's best eats. I plan to buy it again next time I'm in Sokcho. 😊
