Satto Bulpan: a BBQ spot found among the franchise signs in Dongdaegu Station's eateries alley
Satto Bulpan (사또불판) is a briquette-grill BBQ restaurant on Dongbu-ro 30-gil in Dong-gu, Daegu, in the eateries alley by Dongdaegu Station. Walking through that alley, you pass a long row of familiar franchise signs, and Satto Bulpan was the one that stood out among them.

These days your feet naturally head to familiar brands, but a BBQ place run under an owner's own name always catches my eye a second time. And once I went in, I thought, "Yes, this is what a real hidden gem feels like."

What is the atmosphere like inside Satto Bulpan?
It definitely has an old-school vibe, but the inside is really tidy and clean, which impressed me even more.

It keeps the comfort of an old place without letting hygiene slip. If you're looking for a BBQ place near Dongdaegu Station, I think it would satisfy just about anyone you bring along.

Why Satto Bulpan is getting word-of-mouth near Dongdaegu Station
What I liked most at Satto Bulpan was the owner's vibe. You can feel them keep checking on every single table and carefully watching how guests react.
It doesn't feel like just running a business; the wish that "I hope people enjoy the food at my restaurant" comes through completely, and that's probably why it stuck with me.

600g of briquette short rib grilled over patented clean briquettes
What I ordered at Satto Bulpan this day was 600g of briquette short rib (yeontan galbi-sal). Briquette grilling has great atmosphere, but some people worry about health or hygiene. Satto Bulpan says it uses only patented clean briquettes, not ordinary ones.

Briquettes must be fussier to manage and take a lot of work, so it feels like they stick with them just for that deep fire flavor. That's where I could sense the owner's philosophy.

The meat was clean with no gamey smell, and the short rib itself was good quality, so my satisfaction shot up the moment I ate the first piece.

Satto Bulpan side dishes: gamtae, meljeot and garlic soy sauce
The side dishes come out as soon as you order, with no fuss, just what you need. The most memorable were the gamtae (a fine seaweed), the meljeot (salted shrimp sauce) and the garlic soy sauce.

Honestly I don't eat meljeot often because of its distinctive smell, but maybe the owner's blend is just good: it wasn't too salty or pungent, and it actually brought out the flavor of the meat.

Wrapping the meat in gamtae was an unusual combo that worked well, and the garlic soy sauce was a sneaky kicker I kept reaching for! It doesn't feel like a place that only does the meat well; they put real thought into what goes with it.

Doenjang-jjigae and steamed rice: is the rice good at Satto Bulpan too?
The moment I lifted the lid on the rice, I could tell they care about it. After meat, doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew) and rice are a given. Since I'm raising kids, I'm particularly picky about rice when eating out, and not many places use good rice.
But the moment I opened the lid here, I thought, "Wow, they really care about their rice." Rice is the most basic thing, but doing the basics properly is harder than it looks. A place with good rice makes you trust its other ingredients too, and here the rice was tasty even on its own. I felt a place this serious about basics will last a long time.
On top of that, there's a free egg steam (gyeran-jjim) service once, a small but nice little bonus.
A Dongdaegu Station BBQ place worth coming back to: Satto Bulpan
Among the countless BBQ places near Dongdaegu Station, Satto Bulpan is where I got that "I've found a place run with real sincerity" feeling for the first time in a while. It's good value, tasty, keeps its old-school charm while staying clean and comfortable, and works for a casual meat meal with friends or a relaxed drink while watching baseball.
A surprising gem I stumbled on among the franchises, a Dongdaegu Station restaurant I'd of course go back to 👍🏻
