Gwacheon Korean restaurant for seaweed soup sets: Haenon Miyeok

I went to Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch with my child for a weekend family meal. Even days after having the seaweed soup set meal, I kept thinking about it. I was pleased not only with the seaweed soup, which had plenty of fish, but also with the side dishes and self-serve bar.

How were the space and parking for a family meal with a child?

The restaurant was spacious and clean, and there was ample parking. The space was divided into left and right sections from the entrance, and there was plenty of room between the tables and chairs.

We arrived before 11:30 a.m., and one section was already full of diners. Within 20 minutes of our arrival, many families and groups came in.

Which seaweed soup set meals did we choose, and how much were they?

The menu centered on seaweed soup set meals with abalone, beef, dried pollock, and flounder. There were also other Korean dishes, including beef bulgogi and stir-fried spicy pork.

The three of us visited with a young child. Since my child and I like fish, we ordered the boneless flounder seaweed soup set and the dried pollock seaweed soup set. Each was ₩19,000.

The seaweed soup set meal came with six basic side dishes and a salad. From two-person sets onward, it also included seasoned flounder and chicken breast vinegar salad.

How were the self-serve side-dish bar and steamed-rice refills?

I could get more side dishes from the self-serve bar, including japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), fried eggplant, and seasoned cockles. The steamed rice also had unlimited refills, which was convenient for a meal with my child. The per-person set meal was around ₩20,000, but I felt satisfied with the value considering the side dishes and refills.

When I visited, I felt that the self-serve bar was kept clean. I especially liked being able to have more japchae and fried eggplant, and I also enjoyed the chicken breast vinegar salad, seasoned cockles, and seasoned flounder that came with the set meal.

What did the boneless flounder and dried pollock seaweed soups taste like?

The boneless flounder seaweed soup was served generously in a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot). To my taste, it did not have an overpowering seasoned flavor; instead, I could taste the deep broth and the nutty seaweed.

The rice was neatly served as well. There was plenty of flounder in the seaweed soup, so my child enjoyed it too.

The dried pollock seaweed soup I had also contained plenty of plump pieces of dried pollock. Perhaps because I usually like dried pollock soup, this one suited my taste even better.

I was pleased with the seaweed soup, the side-dish selection, the parking, and the space, and the staff were kind as well. Next time, I would like to return for a meal with my parents.
