Bibimbap restaurant in Gwacheon: Bibisam's soft torim rice

In short

Bibisam Gwacheon Main Branch is a torim bibimbap restaurant near Government Complex Gwacheon Station in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi. I returned with colleagues for beef tartare, octopus, and bulgogi bibimbap, and liked the soft rice and balanced seasoning, though a single bowl may feel a little light.

I went to Bibisam Gwacheon Main Branch (비비삼 과천본점) for bibimbap at lunch in Gwacheon. It is introduced as a restaurant specializing in torim bibimbap, made with Korean beef, Korean pork, and domestically grown rice.

This was my second visit. I paid for my first meal myself, then came back with close work colleagues because I liked it.

How close is it to Government Complex Gwacheon Station, and is parking available?

The address is 101, 1F, 10 Saesulmak-gil, Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. The original post states that it is 59 m from Exit 11 of Government Complex Gwacheon Station on Line 4, and that it is open daily from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM. There is no on-site parking, so you need to use a nearby public parking lot.

What was the atmosphere like, and was it busy at mealtimes?

The shop had newly opened when I visited, but it did not feel unsettled. On both my first and second visits, the ordering and dining flow felt well established.

The restaurant was tidy, and by my count there were about five two-person tables and five four-person tables. There were quite a few customers, so I thought there could be a wait at mealtimes.

What are the menu prices and ordering process?

Menus started at ₩9,000 when I visited. I did not record every item, but lunch felt reasonably priced.

Each table had a tablet, so I could order from the table.

The four of us ordered two Korean beef tartare bibimbap sets, an octopus bibimbap, and a bulgogi bibimbap, then added two Korean beef tteokgalbi (grilled minced beef patties) sets. The prices I recorded were ₩14,500 for the Korean beef tartare bibimbap set, ₩11,000 for the octopus bibimbap, and ₩10,000 for the bulgogi bibimbap. I recorded the Korean beef tteokgalbi set as ₩1,000 each, but its exact components and additional charge need confirmation.

When the food is ready, a notification appears on the tablet. You collect it yourself from the pickup counter, and the food came arranged on a wooden tray. The bowls were hot, so I needed to be careful when collecting them. After eating, you return the dishes to the tray-return station.

What is available at the self-service bar?

The self-service bar along one wall had white kimchi, miso soup, and sesame oil. Scissors and tongs were also available.

I could add as many enoki mushrooms as I wanted to the miso soup. Everyone in my group served different amounts to suit their preferences.

The white kimchi was crisp. The side dishes may feel simple, but I found them sufficient with the bibimbap.

How were the torim rice and Korean beef tartare bibimbap?

The bibimbap bowl felt quite large. Following the guidance to mix it with chopsticks, I combined the rice and namul (seasoned vegetables) with my chopsticks.

The beef tartare came separately in a small bowl. I added it and mixed everything together, only noticing after I had finished the table guidance saying not to mix the tartare but to place it on top of the rice. I still liked it mixed, too.

The rice, prepared using the torim method of rinsing cooked rice with hot broth, retained the texture of the grains while staying soft and glossy. There was plenty of namul, and I especially liked the crisp bite of bellflower root. It was already seasoned, so no one in my group added extra seasoning.

Was a single serving enough, and how was the added tteokgalbi?

On my first visit, the amount of bibimbap did not feel especially large relative to the bowl. This time, we added two Korean beef tteokgalbi sets to share, and they went well alongside the bibimbap.

A soft-fried egg came with it as well, and the four of us finished everything. With these additions, I felt comfortably full without feeling heavy afterward. If a single serving seems like it may not be enough, a set or extra side is worth considering.

What did my colleagues think of the octopus and bulgogi bibimbap?

The colleague who had the octopus bibimbap said the octopus was tender. They also said the seasoning was not intensely spicy or overpowering, so it was easy to eat.

The colleague who had the bulgogi bibimbap also said the seasoning suited them and liked that the meat had no sinewy parts.

There was also seaweed powder on the table, but I was so focused on eating that I did not add it. A single serving may feel a little light, but the soft rice and texture of the namul stayed with me. Since each person receives a complete tray, I felt it would be easy enough for a solo lunch or a meal with colleagues.
