Seokchon Lake tonkatsu restaurant with cheese-waterfall katsu: Matsumi

In short

Matsumi Seokchon Lake Main Branch is a tonkatsu and mazesoba (Japanese brothless noodle) restaurant at 262 Baekjegobun-ro, Songpa-gu, Seoul. Arriving at 5pm, right as Matsumi reopens after its break time, the writer had the spicy cheddar cheese tonkatsu buried under a waterfall of cheese and the mazekatsu set, then mixed rice into the leftover mazesoba sauce to finish. With tender pork and mazesoba seasoning that isn't overdone, Matsumi is a place worth coming back to.

Today I've got a proper tonkatsu spot I found in Jamsil.😋

Whoa🤤 this place is seriously dedicated to tonkatsu.🔥

There are plenty of tasty restaurants out there, but the ones that make you think 'I need to come back' the moment you take your first bite aren't actually that common.☺️ At Matsumi, the food was great, but the owner's kindness was just as memorable — it's a place I want to visit again.💛

Matsumi Seokchon Lake Main Branch fills up fast even at 5pm

Matsumi Seokchon Lake Main Branch is a tonkatsu and mazesoba restaurant on Baekjegobun-ro near Seokchon Gobun Station. I timed my visit for 5pm, right when afternoon service resumes after break time. I figured going right at opening would mean I'd have some breathing room, but nope.ㅋㅋㅋ Other dine-in customers kept arriving around the same time as me, and I saw people coming in for takeout too.😄 The place started filling up fast.😳😆 It had that feel of a real neighborhood favorite that everyone in-the-know in Songpa is already onto, which got me even more excited before I'd even eaten.🤤🤩

The assorted katsu looked great and the mazekatsu had me curious too🤔🤤 — I had a happy dilemma before even walking in over what to order so I could report back that I'd eaten well.ㅎㅎ

Solo seats and hair ties: the vibe inside

Matsumi's interior is clean and relaxed overall — a good spot to eat with a friend, and comfortable enough for a family meal too.😊 There are solo seats for eating alone comfortably.😊 As someone who loves eating solo, the second I saw the seating I was already planning my next visitㅋㅋㅋ

From light snacks to cleanse your palate after the meal to hair ties ready to grab when you need them, everything's thoughtfully stocked.😊 These are small things, but they're exactly the kind that are annoying to be missing when you actually need them, so having them ready ahead of time felt really considerate.👏🏻✨ You could feel the care put into thinking through every little detail from the customer's perspective.✨👍🏻 It warmed my heart before I'd even eaten.☺️

The walls are covered with explanations of the tonkatsu and mazesoba, along with mouthwatering photos and posters.👀 It's fun to look around while waiting for the food.😁 Even before the food arrived,

So how good is this actually going to be..🤔🤤

my anticipation kept buildingㅋㅋㅋ The menu descriptions especially felt like a little preview study session for what I was about to eat, so it was genuinely fun to read them.🤓

Ordering at Matsumi: QR code, with spice level choices

At Matsumi you order via a QR code at your table.📱 They kindly walk you through how to order via QR and how to enjoy the food, so even a first-timer doesn't need to worry.😊👍🏻

There's such a wide range of dishes that browsing through the menu is fun in itself.👀 From assorted katsu to mazesoba to curry, I had a happy dilemma before ordering.🤤💭🤤

Ordering is simple — just use the QR code at the table!📱 Adding or removing options felt just like customizing a delivery order — spice level, extra toppings, whatever you want — and it was way more intuitive and convenient than I expected.👍🏻 Being able to slowly browse the menu and mix and match to your taste made this ordering method really enjoyable.ㅎㅎ Being able to adjust the spice level in particular means anyone worried about heat can order to their own taste.🌶️😊

What's with the cats sitting together on top of the poster?ㅋㅋㅋㅋ😍 I'm the type who can't walk past little cute details like this, so I zoomed in for a photo.📸😂

Spicy cheddar tonkatsu: a cheese waterfall look and tender meat

Matsumi's spicy cheddar tonkatsu comes out with cheese piled on so high it nearly buries the cutlet completely. The second it arrived I grabbed my camera for the visual.📸 With cheese practically drowning the cutlet and a generous side of cabbage, it's a plate that looks filling before you even take a bite.🤤

Spicy cheddar cheese tonkatsu piled high with cheese

At this point, isn't it less 'topped with cheese' and more 'the tonkatsu got dropped into a vat of cheese'?🤣🧀 That yellow cheese pouring down like a waterfall hit exactly my taste.🤤👍🏻

Tonkatsu isn't just about a crispy coating, right? If you bite in and the meat is tough or dry, no sauce can save it — but here, one bite in and I thought,

Whoa👍🏻 this meat is genuinely tender🤩

The crispy texture of the breading held up while the meat inside stayed moist and tender — you could really feel the texture the moment you bit down.🤤 No wonder they specialize in tonkatsu.☺️

The rich, savory cheese with a hint of spicy sauce cuts through the richness while keeping you coming back for more.🧀🌶️ I'm not great with spicy food, so I wondered if I'd be fine even at the basic spice level — it turned out to be just a light kick🌶️, with the cheese softening it out along the way🧀, so it was more enjoyable than I expected.😋 Spicy → savory → crispy → tender, repeating in every bite — my chopsticks didn't stop.ㅋㅋㅋ

Mazekatsu set: springy noodles and a seasoning that's not overdone

The noodles in Matsumi's mazekatsu set are thick but never mushy — they have a springy bite. Honestly, I'm not usually a big fan of thick udon-style noodles. But these were different.👀 Instead of the mushy udon texture I expected, they had a clearly springy, chewy bite.🤤 You just mix everything up — meat, chives, seaweed, sesame seeds, and egg yolk.

Mazesoba topped with meat, chives, and egg yolk

As I mixed it, the smell alone was already amazing..🤤 As the sauce coated the noodles, the meat and chives came along with every bite, and the combination was great when you got a full mouthful.😍 What I liked most, though, was the seasoning. With mazesoba, it can start out great but get saltier and saltier as you go, leaving you reaching for water over and over,

but here the sauce had plenty of flavor without ever tasting overly salty. There was no lingering saltiness or heaviness in my mouth after eating, and I really appreciated that.👍🏻🤤

Rich, but never overdone

That balance is genuinely hard to pull off, I think, so after finishing the mazesoba I really felt this place knows how to season food well.👏🏻

A chopstick-full of mixed mazesoba

Shrimp tempura, then rice mixed into the leftover sauce

Can't skip the shrimp tempura either.🦐 The batter stayed nice and crispy, so it was great to have a piece here and there alongside the tonkatsu. Between the tonkatsu and the shrimp tempura, I was already starting to feel fullㅋㅋ But that wasn't the end of it.🤣

Even the tonkatsu joined the mazesoba.ㅋㅋㅋㅋ I couldn't resist this combo either.🤣 Topping the tender tonkatsu with the mazesoba sauce, meat and chives gave it a completely different feel again.🤤🧡💛 Once you've worked through most of the noodles, don't forget to mix rice into what's left.🍚 With sauce, meat and chives still remaining, adding rice means not a single drop of sauce goes to waste.ㅋㅋㅋ Noodles then rice.. I genuinely felt like I needed to unzip my pants at that point.🤣🤣

Rice mixed into the leftover mazesoba sauce

After properly finishing both the tonkatsu and mazesoba, I wrapped it up with a refreshing zero-sugar cola.🥤 My stomach was already about to burst, but there's always room for something fizzy.ㅋㅋㅋㅋ🤣

What stuck with me longer than the food: Matsumi's service

No matter how good the food is, if the service falls short, you're not coming back, right? A place that's both delicious and warmly attentive tends to stay in your memory.

Matsumi was exactly that

There were instructions on how to eat mazesoba posted in the restaurant and even printed on the utensil holder, but that wasn't all. When they brought the food out, they personally walked me through how best to eat it, since I was a first-time visitor.😊 And throughout the meal, they'd check in before I even realized I needed something, offering to take away plates before I asked.✨🤩 Running a busy restaurant makes it genuinely hard to stay on top of these small details. But it didn't feel like scripted politeness — it felt like they were actually asking themselves 'what does this customer need right now?' — and that felt really warm to me.👍🏻✨🤩👏🏻 I could tell the young owners are running their place with real care. I really hope a place like this keeps doing well for a long time.🥹💛

Matsumi Seokchon Lake Main Branch, summed up

  • Tonkatsu meat is tender and moist rather than tough — very satisfying🤤👏🏻
  • The rich, savory cheese plus spicy sauce combo really works🔥
  • The mazesoba's springy noodles and never-too-salty seasoning were especially satisfying
  • Understandable why customers keep pouring in right after break time ends
  • Above all, the warm attentiveness of checking in first is what stays with you💛

It wasn't just 'that was tasty' —

I need to bring someone back here next time

was the thought that naturally came to mind. If you're looking for a solid tonkatsu spot in Jamsil, or somewhere hearty to eat during a date around Seokchon Lake, Matsumi is the place I'll keep thinking of.😊 A place that filled me up twice — once with the food, and once with the kindness.💛
