What is Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch like?
Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch (고등어명품이되다 수원점) is a mackerel restaurant in West Suwon. The dining room is huge and so is the parking lot, so it's an easy place to visit. Maybe that's why there was a wait even though I went on a weekday... it's clearly a hit.

The sign (?) is visible from far away, so it's super easy to find!

Getting excited, right?

Waiting and choosing your menu
You can join the waitlist through Catch Table, a Korean reservation app. I did too, and waited that way.

I originally came for grilled mackerel, but while waiting I looked at the menu and saw a set meal that includes mackerel sashimi, so I marked it in my mind!!!

After being seated I read the menu slowly and, huh? Mackerel mulhoe?? I've seen plenty of mulhoe, but never mackerel mulhoe! And mackerel sushi! I'd been planning on the sashimi set, so let's get the sushi with raw fish on top too!! And since we came to a mackerel place, an extra grilled mackerel!!
The ceilings are high, so the space feels open. Even with lots of customers it doesn't feel stuffy, and I liked how wide the gaps between tables are.
How are the self-bar side dishes?
At Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch you refill side dishes yourself at the self-service bar. Since you'll be walking back and forth, wide spacing between tables is the best!!

There are as many side dishes as at a hanjeongsik (Korean full-course) restaurant, and wow, from japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) to seaweed soup it feels like a birthday table! So it's a good place for family gatherings or special-occasion meals.
Is the grilled mackerel salty?
The grilled mackerel here isn't intensely salty like salt-cured jeotgal-style mackerel; the seasoning is just right. Food comes out fast while you wait, and the grilled mackerel came out so quickly it startled me!

Piping hot grilled mackerel, big, and seasoned just enough that you could eat it without rice. It is not that super salty cured-style mackerel!! Wow! While I was eating it, the mackerel mulhoe and mackerel sushi arrived.
Is the raw mackerel sushi fishy?
The raw mackerel sushi had no fishy taste at all. It was my first time trying raw mackerel sushi.

The wasabi is already on top of the rice, so you just dip it lightly in soy sauce, and it's clean-tasting and chewy!!

Mackerel sushi was also a first for me, and it has real charm. Oh!!
What does the mackerel mulhoe taste like, and how much is it?
The mackerel mulhoe at Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch is ₩20,000, and it comes with not just mackerel sashimi but also abalone, other raw fish and seaweed on top of icy broth. It was my first mackerel mulhoe, and the most memorable dish of the day.

The mackerel mulhoe!! It's not only mackerel: there's abalone and other raw fish too, with vegetables and fish piled high over icy broth. It gives off a feeling that it'd clean out your arteries. There's seaweed too!! Because the broth is icy, you can just mix it and eat with chopsticks!! As you eat, the broth melts, and that's when you add the somyeon (thin wheat noodles).

The chewy mackerel sashimi with the crunchy abalone is the best combo!! The broth is well seasoned too: spicy, sour and sweet in harmony!! And this dish is ₩20,000!!

It's perfect mulhoe for hot days like these. There's more fish and vegetables than noodles, which I love!!
Why is the mackerel sashimi so fresh?
Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch has a tank with live mackerel. The reason you can eat such fresh sashimi is the mackerel in that tank!!

Live mackerel at Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch!! There's a reason it's so popular.

Is Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch good for a family meal?
The fish is grilled in a wood-fired oven, food comes out fast, and there are baby chairs, so it's good for family meals. It's good for get-togethers too!

The side dishes are varied and all tasty. Unusually, jeyuk-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) is served as a side dish too, so even with different tastes at the table everyone can enjoy the meal.
