Taean spa pension with private BBQ and sunset dinner: The Classic Spa

A spur-of-the-moment trip to Taean, Chungnam, with my husband! With no plan at all, we just got in the car and left. He drove while I searched for a place to stay. Since we were booking last minute, I'd lowered my expectations a bit, but maybe because it was a Sunday night, there were more rooms available than I expected, and I was able to book The Classic Spa Pension (태안더클래식스파펜션), an oceanview stay right in front of Cheongpodae Beach. It even had BBQ and a spa, so even though it was just one night, we came back properly healed 🩵

Where is The Classic Spa Pension, and how do parking and pickup work?

The Classic Spa Pension is an oceanview pension in Taean, Chungnam, right in front of Cheongpodae Beach, just before you enter Anmyeondo. Driving from Seoul on a Sunday took about 2 hours 30 minutes.

If you drive, you can park in the pension's own lot, and it's so spacious that you don't need to worry about parking. If you're using public transport, you can request a pickup in advance from Cheongpodae Hanaro Mart. Note that pickup is only available after check-in time, 3 PM, and can't be requested on the day of your visit, so be sure to book ahead if you plan to use it!

What is the VIP Orchestra room like?

The room we stayed in was the VIP Orchestra room, and the first thing we noticed when we walked in was the kitchen. It was clean and quite spacious, with a dining table right next to it, so it was comfortable for eating or just relaxing. The fridge was roomy too, with plenty of space for the groceries we'd brought.

Window-side spa and ocean-view table

When I turned my head, the spa and the ocean view through the window came into sight all at once! A spa before bed... this is total healing, isn't it.. 🫢

The VIP Orchestra room's spa can be used from 6 PM to 11 PM, free once per night. Bubble bath powder is provided free too, so you don't need to bring any, and you can't use anything other than the provided powder! Also, filling the spa takes about 50 minutes to 1 hour, so I recommend starting to fill it about an hour before you want to use it!

There's also a table and chairs next to the spa area, and you can enjoy the ocean view from here too. It's great for a casual beer or a relaxed time with coffee or tea, and we grilled meat at the BBQ area, brought it up, and had dinner at this window table looking out at the ocean.

Watch out: the balcony door can lock

Next to that there's also a big door out to the balcony! You can enjoy the ocean view from the balcony too, but be careful: if you close the door completely behind you, it may lock and you won't be able to get back in,, 🚨 I went out to the balcony alone and the door locked, so my husband had to open it from inside 🤣

Bed, bathroom and amenities

The bed in the VIP Orchestra room was nicely wide, made up with clean, freshly laundered white bedding, so it was really comfortable and pleasant ✨ I slept soundly, and my husband said he slept even better than at home, haha.. 😴

The bathroom was kept really clean too. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste and soap were all provided, so you only need to bring a toothbrush and facial cleanser. Best of all, the hot water ran really well, and the shower left my body feeling melted and relaxed!

When is the best time for the Cheongpodae mudflat experience?

At The Classic Spa Pension you can also do the mudflat experience for free. If you're planning on it, you must search the Taean tide table before your visit and check the low tide time! They say about 1 hour 30 minutes before and after low tide is good for the experience, but by the time we visited the window had already passed, so we just took a light walk on the beach.

I'd rushed out and hadn't brought slippers, but luckily there were slippers provided on the path down to the sea, so I could use them comfortably!

Right where the pension leads straight to the sea, the gear needed for the mudflat experience is set out, so you can use it easily when the time is right, and next to it is a small water tap where you can wash off mud and sand with clean water. It's well set up from start to finish, so if you time your visit to low tide, I think you can enjoy the mudflat experience to the fullest!

Walk a little way along the path and Cheongpodae Beach opens up right in front of you! The sea is so close to the pension that it was easy to stroll and enjoy it without any effort.

Next to the stairs down to the sea there's also a large outdoor BBQ area where you can have BBQ in the evening. If you tell the owner your preferred time when you check in, he lights the charcoal on time, so you can use it right away without the hassle of preparing. Ocean view plus BBQ is love .. 💙

The sea connects right to the pension's stairs! The water hadn't fully come in yet, so it was nice to stroll leisurely along the wide sandy beach, and even though it was an awkward time, some people were making do with a small mudflat experience.

And before long, the seawater had started rising.

After the water had fully come in, I went back to the room and looked down again, and the sea filling the whole window was even prettier than when the tide was out!

How does the private 3rd-floor BBQ for VIP rooms work?

The Classic Spa Pension has a large BBQ area on the 1st floor too, but guests in the 3rd-floor VIP rooms can use a dedicated BBQ area on the 3rd floor. There are two VIP rooms, so the owner assigns each room a 2-hour slot so they don't overlap. On the day we visited, the other guests said they'd use the 1st-floor BBQ area, so we could use the private 3rd-floor BBQ space at whatever time we wanted.

The two of us grilled 1 kg of pork neck and pork belly plus shrimp, and ate it all up! 🔥

We bought the shrimp at the nearby Hanaro Mart, about 5 minutes away by car, so it was easy to pick up anything we'd forgotten or needed. Besides the mart, there's also a convenience store a 3-minute walk away, good for grabbing some beer, snacks and so on.

We grilled the meat and shrimp all at once, brought them up, and had a comfortable, pleasant dinner at the window table in the VIP Orchestra room. When I put it on my Instagram story, friends flooded me with messages asking where it was, haha. But the real atmosphere was way better than it looks in photos.. 🫶✨

As we sipped a light beer with dinner, the sun started to go down, and we got to watch the sea turn beautiful colors in the sunset.

What is the private bubble spa like?

After dinner, it was spa time in the VIP Orchestra room!

Once the water was filled enough, I added the bath powder the pension provided and turned on the spa machine, and fluffy bubbles started rising. Sitting in the warm water, chatting with my husband about this and that, we washed away the whole day's tiredness~ 😌

Checkout day and overall verdict

The next day, because we overslept, we washed up and packed as soon as we woke and checked out! It rained quite a lot on checkout day, but an oceanview in the rain had its own charm and was nice too. Ocean view, BBQ and a spa: it was a one-night, two-day trip full of healing, the first in a while..🍀
