Yeongdeungpo chicken restaurant: cheongyang cream nurungji, Jangjakgun
In short
Jangjakgun Munrae is a herbal nurungji (crispy scorched rice) whole chicken restaurant on Seonyu-ro in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. On a Monday evening visit booked in advance, the writer ordered the cheongyang cream herbal nurungji chicken for 27,000 won and added a mozzarella cheese topping for 2,000 won, asking for the rice and corn on the side so they could be stirred into a cream risotto afterwards. The chicken at Jangjakgun Munrae had the grease cooked out of it, so even the skin never felt heavy — easily a whole bird per person.

A Munrae Station chicken restaurant where you can enjoy authentic herbal nurungji whole chicken in various fusion styles — Jangjakgun Dangsan
Why go back to Jangjakgun Munrae once the weather cools?
Just a while ago it was so hot outside that you could barely breathe, but now that Malbok has passed, the weather's actually gotten quite cool. Time really does fly.

I was so busy I barely noticed summer passing, but it feels like fall is arriving quickly and I'm so glad — these days I've been craving herbal nurungji whole chicken, perfect for this kind of weather, so I went ahead to my favorite Munrae Station chicken restaurant, Jangjakgun.

It's a bit disappointing that there's no parking, but I'm a pedestrian anyway so it didn't matter much — I was craving chicken so badly and hadn't been in a while, so I was really excited and made a reservation ahead of time.

When I opened the door and walked in, the place was almost fully booked even on a Monday evening — it really hit me why this Yangpyeong-dong chicken restaurant is so popular around here.

A friendly staff member seated us and immediately scanned the menu for us. Now that they have set menus, it felt like even better value for money.

For the menu, I ordered the cheongyang cream herbal nurungji chicken, which I'd fallen completely in love with last time, plus a separate cheese topping, and ordered it separately. After a short wait, they brought out a generous spread of side dishes first.

The basic side dishes are set on the table first, and if you need more, you can help yourself at the self-service bar. I love the cabbage salad, so I remember going back for more of it quite often.

What does the cheongyang cream nurungji chicken (27,000 won) taste like?
Munrae Station chicken restaurant Jangjakgun's ordered menu Cheongyang cream nurungji chicken (₩27,000) Herbal nurungji whole chicken served with a savory yet spicy cream sauce. A hugely popular menu you can enjoy in various ways, like mixing the rice with the cream for a risotto-style dish.
After ordering and waiting a bit, they brought out the chicken that had just been roasted outside over wood fire, cooked with the cream sauce, and set it right on the table. The mouth-watering look of it made me drool instantly.

Rice and corn on the side: making a cream risotto
The rice normally comes packed inside the chicken, but since I didn't want it getting soggy mixed with the cream sauce, I asked for it to be served separately, and they kindly obliged.

Later, after eating some of the chicken, mixing the rice with the cream sauce gives you a chicken cream risotto kind of vibe, making the meal even more enjoyable.

The corn is also normally placed on top of the chicken, but since I'm not a big fan, I asked for it separately, and I liked the attentive service of serving things according to your preference at this Yangpyeong-dong chicken restaurant.
The real charm of this Yangpyeong-dong chicken restaurant is the whole chicken, drained of grease and surprisingly moist and tender. It's so good that you can eat even the skin without it feeling heavy at all, and the meat is savory and light the more you chew — the kind of flavor that makes one chicken per person totally doable.

Is the 2,000 won mozzarella cheese topping worth it?
Add-on topping menu Mozzarella cheese (₩2,000) 100% natural mozzarella cheese, pairs perfectly with the chicken (Normally placed on top of the chicken, but served separately upon request)
Another charm of Jangjakgun, besides its various fusion-style menus, is being able to add toppings however you like. I love adding a cheese topping, so even though it costs an extra ₩2,000, I ordered it — they gave a generous amount, and stretching the cheese, which really did seem to be 100% natural mozzarella, was quite fun.

I thought the portion was pretty big, but I guess I'd been craving chicken so badly that it disappeared in no time haha. It was so delicious, and next time I really want to try the herbal nurungji rosé chicken — I'll definitely have to go back to check that one off.
