Nowon sushi buffet, weekday dinner with Dad: salmon sashimi, Kuu Kuu

Kuu Kuu Nowon Branch is a sushi buffet on the 6th floor of 247 Nowon-ro in Nowon, Seoul, near Hagye Station. While Mom was away on a trip, the writer and Dad booked a weekday 7:30 pm dinner and ate three plates of raw salmon sashimi alone, plus Uljin red snow crab soup, snow crab pasta, LA galbi (marinated short ribs) and jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), though lamb chops were not served that night. Verdict: for all the raw salmon sashimi you want at Kuu Kuu Nowon Branch on a weekday dinner, arrive early.

Dog-friendly jokbal spot in Sangbong with garlic bossam: Samo Jokbal

Samo Jokbal Sangbong Branch (삼오족발 상봉점) is a newly opened jokbal (braised pig's trotters) and bossam (boiled pork wraps) restaurant on Sangbong-ro 25-gil in Jungnang, Seoul. The writer called ahead to confirm dogs were allowed, then visited with their dog and dad and ordered a half-and-half of fire-grilled spicy jokbal and garlic bossam. Neither sauce was sweet and the bossam had no gamey smell. The writer's dad, who normally doesn't enjoy bossam, ate it the most, making Samo Jokbal a Sangbong jokbal spot worth recommending to anyone who wants garlic bossam without the sweetness.

Sheer winter-cool lip tattoo when tint fades in Gangnam: Lamoon Brow

Lamoon Brow is a 1:1 custom semi-permanent lip tattoo studio near Gangnam Station Exit 5 in Seocho, Seoul. The writer came to Lamoon Brow with dull, asymmetrical lips where only the outline remained once her tint wore off. She was diagnosed as a winter cool tone and got a slightly sheer color so it wouldn't look unnatural, plus line correction. The lip line was painful, but the result was so satisfying she kept checking the mirror even bare-faced.

Gangnam Station kaisendon before a lip tattoo, plus futomaki: Ilpum

Ilpum Gangnam Branch is a kaisendon (Japanese seafood rice bowl) and sushi restaurant in a basement on Seocho-daero 74-gil, near Gangnam Station in Seocho, Seoul. Before a semi-permanent lip tattoo appointment, the writer ate alone at the counter on a weekday evening, ordering the premium kaisendon and one futomaki (thick sushi roll), and enjoyed the kelp-aged sashimi, very fresh uni and a lineup running from chawanmushi to mini udon and pudding; the basic kaisendon is ₩26,000. Ilpum Gangnam Branch is a Gangnam Station kaisendon spot where even a solo diner gets a filling, course-like meal.

Jamsil snack bar, keto gimbap takeout for my parents: Jamsil Cheotjip

Jamsil Cheotjip (잠실첫집) is a Korean snack bar serving noodles and gimbap in the basement of the Trigium shopping arcade at Saenae Station in Songpa, Seoul. After an early finish at work, the writer had a solo meal of hangover anchovy noodles, mukcham keto gimbap and shrimp keto gimbap, then packed the leftover keto gimbap for their parents, who enjoyed it even after dinner. Jamsil Cheotjip is a good lunch spot near Saenae Station for a light, healthy and filling solo meal.

Jamsil sandwich shop for late-night family snacks: Florisandwich

Florisandwich Jamsil (플로리샌드위치 잠실본점) is a sandwich shop popular for group orders, on the first floor of the Ricenz arcade by Saenae Station in Jamsil, Songpa, Seoul. The writer took away a basil chicken apple bun, a spicy chicken ciabatta and a ham and cheese croissant, shared them with family as a 10pm snack, and ate the leftovers the next day as a picnic-style lunch at the office near Cheonggyecheon. Verdict: Florisandwich is light enough for dieters and easy to take out for a Hangang Park outing or a baseball game.

Okjeong, Yangju Korean BBQ after 9 pm: lean pork neck, Mat Chandeul

Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in the Okjeong central shopping district of Yangju, Gyeonggi, specializing in 14-day aged pork that staff grill all the way through for you. The writer arrived with her boyfriend after work, past 9 pm, ordered 2 servings of fresh pork belly and 1 serving of fresh pork neck, and fell for the belly dipped in salt alone and the meaty flavor of the lean neck. After losing her old regular barbecue spot, the writer decided Mat Chandeul is the place to settle on.

Women's M-shaped hairline tattoo in Songpa, Seoul: Mood Moon Brow

Mood Moon Brow is a one-person semi-permanent makeup studio near Sports Complex Station in Songpa, Seoul. The writer, who had hidden a square forehead that looked like M-shaped hair loss behind bangs since middle school, got a hairline tattoo at Mood Moon Brow and felt no pain at all, thanks to numbing cream before the session and extra pain-relief cream midway. Verdict: the square forehead became rounded, and she can now go out without worrying about her bangs.

Hanam Misa Chinese restaurant: implant-friendly tangsuyuk for Dad

O Hyeongje Hwangje Nurungjitang Hanam Misa Main Branch is a nurungji (scorched rice soup) and Chinese restaurant on Misa-daero in Hanam, near the Misa rowing stadium. On a weekday evening after work, a family of four ordered seafood abalone nurungji soup, mung bean abalone nurungji soup and fresh tenderloin tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), ate comfortably with their dog behind a pet screen, and the tender tangsuyuk was easy to eat even for a dad with dental implants. O Hyeongje Hwangje Nurungjitang is a mild, easy-on-the-stomach Chinese restaurant in Hanam Misa that left the parents very satisfied—a solid pick for family gatherings.

Coex Indian restaurant, aloo paratha & rasgulla: India The Durbar

India The Durbar Samseong Station Branch (인디아더르바르 삼성역점) is an Indian restaurant on basement level 1 of a building on Samseong-ro 84-gil near Coex in Gangnam, Seoul. After a work trip to Coex, two friends arrived around 3:30 PM and ordered butter chicken makhani, prawn vindaloo, garlic butter naan, aloo paratha, lassi and rasgulla à la carte. The butter chicken makhani was good enough to scrape the bowl clean, while the prawn vindaloo and lassi fell short. For proper Indian curry near Coex, the butter chicken makhani at India The Durbar is the answer.

Eel restaurant in Myeonmok for Dad's birthday, set for 4: Cheonsangae

Cheonsangae Jangeoga Myeonmok Sagajeong Branch (천상애장어가) is a charcoal-grilled eel restaurant on Myeonmok-ro in Jungnang, Seoul, between Sagajeong Station and Myeonmok Station. For Dad's birthday, the writer, her parents and her older brother booked a weekday dinner and ordered the set for 4, adding 1 extra eel, nurungji sungnyung (scorched-rice tea) and Tongyeong salted oysters, while staff grilled everything from start to finish. Cheonsangae Jangeoga is a satisfying Myeonmok eel restaurant for a restorative family meal with parents.

Pocheon Western restaurant late lunch: truffle risotto at Oseuseu

Oseuseu is a quiet, cozy Western restaurant on Wangbang-ro 118beon-gil in Sineup-dong, Pocheon, Gyeonggi. After missing lunch, the writer arrived at Oseuseu around 2:40pm and ordered a grilled baby napa cabbage salad, a 220g house steak and a truffle mushroom risotto à la carte. Despite assuming truffle wasn't for them, the writer scraped the risotto bowl clean. For a Pocheon date or a pasta and Western meal, Oseuseu satisfies on both price and flavor.
