A Gwanggyo café after a weekend family shopping trip: Café Diaz
Café Diaz (DIAAZ) Galleria Gwanggyo is a Gwanggyo café famous for cakes heaped with fresh fruit. It's gotten noticeably chilly lately, so over the weekend we took the family out to Galleria department store to shop. Afterward I was desperate for something sweet, went on a frantic search spree, and found Café Diaz Galleria Gwanggyo, which locals say has dessert quality locked down.

Café Diaz Galleria Gwanggyo location and parking
Café Diaz Galleria Gwanggyo is inside the B1 food hall (food court) of Galleria department store, 124 Gwanggyojungang-ro, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi. Since it's inside the department store, parking is needless to say comfortable, and it's a really easy stop to combine with shopping, nearby sights or a date.

Take the escalator down to B1 and the lovely indie-pink sign and stylish round arched interior catch your eye from far away. The cakes in the showcase out front look so overwhelming that passersby stop in their tracks to look.

What are Café Diaz cakes made with?
A sign at the Café Diaz counter said they make the cakes carefully every day with fresh domestic eggs. They also say they use only 100% dairy fresh cream, so the sweetness is clean and refined without being greasy, which is Diaz's selling point. I could see why this place is famous for cake.

Café Diaz whole cake and slice cake menu with prices
For whole cakes at Café Diaz, the Figs Mongttang (size 1) and the Fruit Fresh Cream Cake (size 1) are ₩49,000 each. The Figs Mongttang is covered edge to edge with in-season figs, an overwhelming sight!

The Fruit Fresh Cream Cake (size 1, ₩49,000) is topped with a harmonious mix of six or seven kinds of fresh fruit, including Shine Muscat grapes, kiwi, grapefruit, orange, melon and figs, so it's perfect for an anniversary cake.

For anyone who finds a whole cake too much, there are slice cakes (such as the ₩11,900 blueberry slice) and spoonable tiramisu and fruit cups (₩10,000 each) that are easy to scoop with a spoon, so the choice was really wide.

Cakes and party supplies in one stop
At one side of Café Diaz Galleria Gwanggyo, there's a colorful selection of number candles, cute character candles (about ₩1,500), party glasses and cone hats. Such a thoughtful touch! If you suddenly need to celebrate a birthday or anniversary while shopping at the department store, being able to get the cake and party supplies in one go is a big plus.

Café Diaz drink menu: what we ordered
Besides the Americano (₩4,500), the Café Diaz drinks included a signature cream latte and a lineup of homemade fruit-preserve teas. To pair with the sweet cake, we ordered a HOT decaf Americano (₩5,000) and, for the chilly weather, a HOT homemade lemon tea (₩6,000).

How was the Café Diaz takeout packaging?
Café Diaz packed everything carefully in a lovely pink box that goes straight for the heart. The takeout cup sleeves also have Diaz's signature rabbit logo, which made me happy the whole way home. The moment we got home, I opened the box with a fluttering heart.

I opened the pretty wrapping and ta-da~ the cake was sitting there, fitted perfectly to the box :)

Café Diaz fruit slice cake: how much fruit is on top?
The Café Diaz fruit slice cake has such a dense topping that you can't tell whether you're eating cake or fruit! Each time I pushed in my fork, fresh milk cream seeped between the soft sponge layers and melted in my mouth. The fruit especially wasn't mushy but crisp and bursting with juice, so the freshness came through right on the tip of my tongue.

Pairing the fruit slice with decaf Americano and homemade lemon tea
Decaf Americano (hot)
The Café Diaz decaf Americano didn't have that weak, watery taste or sourness that decaf often has; it kept a rich, nutty body like dark chocolate. It tidied up the sweetness of the fresh cream cake, a perfect pairing.
Homemade lemon tea (hot)
The Café Diaz homemade lemon tea didn't have the artificial sweetness of store-bought syrup. It came with plenty of thick lemon slices, and the freshness of lemon and a pleasant sweetness were steeped in strongly, with a deep flavor that felt like it soothed the start of a sore throat.

Do you need to reserve a Café Diaz whole cake in advance?
The Café Diaz whole fruit cakes are so popular that they often sell out early on weekend afternoons. If you have a special day coming up, the safest move is to hold a whole cake at least 2–3 days ahead through Naver Booking or KakaoTalk Plus Friend.
Café Diaz Galleria Gwanggyo: final verdict
Café Diaz, on B1 of Galleria department store in Gwanggyo, was a true cake destination where gorgeous fruit-cake looks meet honest ingredients, domestic eggs and 100% dairy fresh cream, for an explosive synergy. There are no dedicated seats, so eating there may be a bit inconvenient, but the takeout packaging was excellent and the quality of the taste was overwhelming enough to more than make up for it.
