Gangnam date café, mango bar sherbet latte: Upper and Under
In short
Upper and Under is a dessert café in Gangnam, Seoul, 298 meters from Sinnonhyeon Station Exit 6 and spread over the basement, first, and second floors. On a Gangnam Station date, the writer and her boyfriend shared a matcha cream oat latte, a mango bar sherbet latte with a whole mango bar dropped into the drink, tiramisu, and vanilla Basque cheesecake. The Basque cheesecake at Upper and Under was memorable enough to be a reason to come back to Gangnam Station.

My boyfriend and I were on a date around Gangnam Station and went looking for a café with good desserts. Lately I've been more into pairing coffee with a tasty cake or dessert than just drinking coffee alone, so I was searching for somewhere with a solid dessert lineup. That's how I found Upper and Under.

Where is Upper and Under, and what are its hours?

Basement to 2nd floor: why Upper and Under suits a Gangnam Station date

The cakes and desserts already looked amazing in photos, so I was curious, but visiting in person the space felt even bigger and more comfortable than I expected — a good spot to add to a Gangnam Station date course.

The interior spans the basement, first, and second floors, and the space was more spacious than I imagined. It felt like you could sit comfortably even during busy hours, and it also seemed like a nice place to rest for a bit while shopping or dating around Gangnam.
Upper and Under's dessert case: what's on display

The first thing I checked as soon as I walked in was the desserts.

Cakes and all kinds of desserts were laid out right in front of us, and every single one looked so good that I spent a long time deciding what to pick.

In the end we picked a matcha cream oat latte, mango bar sherbet latte, tiramisu, and vanilla Basque cheesecake. We ordered several things to share, and looking back, we picked well.

We didn't wait long after ordering. The buzzer went off pretty quickly, and once we brought everything to the table and set it out, it looked really satisfying just visually.
Matcha cream oat latte at Upper and Under

First, the matcha cream oat latte had rich, smooth coffee topped with matcha cream.
You could taste the coffee's depth alongside the fragrant matcha, and with the cream added, it was smooth and easy to drink overall.
Mango bar sherbet latte: a whole mango bar in the drink
The drink I ordered that day purely for the visual was the mango bar sherbet latte.

When I walked in, there was a menu photo on the wall showing a whole mango bar inside the drink, and it caught my eye. I was curious, so I ordered it, and sure enough, when it arrived, there was a real mango bar in there just like the photo — it was fun.

Once I mixed it well and took a sip, I got that sweet, tangy mango flavor, and pieces of mango flesh kept coming through the straw as I drank, giving it a chewy texture too. It wasn't just a pretty-looking drink — it was actually fun to drink.
Vanilla Basque cheesecake, the standout at Upper and Under

The first bite had both a soft and a dense, gooey texture at once. It was moist with that distinct savory cheese flavor, plus a subtle vanilla aroma — genuinely delicious.
The cake wasn't too dry, but it also wasn't overly heavy, so it paired perfectly with coffee.

I already like Basque cheesecake in general, but out of everything we had that day, this one stuck with me the most. Honestly, I could see myself coming back to Gangnam Station just for this cake.
Tiramisu at Upper and Under

The tiramisu was delicious too. You could really taste the chocolate, and the cream was soft without being too sweet.

With the cocoa powder dusted on top adding its aroma, it paired especially well with coffee.

Ordering several things and sharing them between the two of us was great, since we got to enjoy a variety of flavors.
Is Upper and Under worth a second stop on a Gangnam date?
When you're dating around Gangnam Station, it's always a question where to get coffee after a meal, and a café like Upper and Under with a wide range of desserts gives you plenty of options. If you're like me and enjoy the happy dilemma of choosing a dessert, just browsing the case is part of the fun. Especially if you like Basque cheesecake, this is a place I'd personally recommend trying at least once.
