Sunchang hanok café for fresh mango bingsu: Hwayangyeonhwa
In short
Hwayangyeonhwa is a hanok-style dessert café in Sunchang, Jeonbuk, with a bamboo photo spot and two spacious buildings. I tried fresh mango bingsu, an Americano, and gold kiwi and chestnut chapssaltteok. Verdict: a peaceful stop for dessert on a Sunchang drive.

First impressions of Hwayangyeonhwa, Sunchang's hanok café
As soon as I arrived at Hwayangyeonhwa, a café in Sunchang, I could feel the warm, comforting atmosphere unique to a hanok-style café. I love visiting cafés with this kind of traditional Korean-house feel lately—they're so healing and put my mind at ease :)

The parking lot was large too, which was great. Being able to visit without parking stress is so important!

A bamboo photo spot and spacious hanok setting
Hwayangyeonhwa's bamboo photo spot! Isn't the path through the bamboo gorgeous? And the hanok you can see behind it—ahh!! There are lights along both sides of the path too, so I thought it would feel even more atmospheric after sunset. It was pretty in the daytime, but I bet evening has a totally different mood, so I'd love to come back around sunset next time, haha.

The interior was spacious too, and with two buildings, the scale was quite substantial.

Hwayangyeonhwa's menu and seasonal fruit bingsu

The Hwayangyeonhwa menu! There was plenty to choose from, including signature bingsu, chapssaltteok (glutinous rice cakes), and drinks.

Hwayangyeonhwa's signature bingsu, made with seasonal fruit!

I was originally just going to order a simple drink, but then I spotted fresh fruit displayed off to one side? Wow, hahaha—I saw the mango and immediately changed course to bingsu.

Hwayangyeonhwa chapssaltteok filled with fruit
Hwayangyeonhwa's signature item: chapssaltteok! The display case was full of beautifully wrapped, colorful little rice cakes!! There were so many varieties, and these weren't just plain chapssaltteok—they had fruit or other ingredients inside. What is going on with those wrappers? They were so pretty that I wanted to open every single one and taste them all! Hahaha.

There were different lunchbox sizes for the chapssaltteok, as well as gift cases in various sizes, so I think they would be wonderful to choose and pack as gifts to suit your taste.

The 9-piece gift set especially looked so luxurious! It would make such a thoughtful holiday gift. The colors are beautiful too, so I think anyone receiving it would be happy!

Wow... isn't it just so pretty... 💛

Fresh mango bingsu and gold kiwi and chestnut chapssaltteok
What we ordered: fresh mango bingsu, an Americano, and two chapssaltteok 💛

The bingsu came piled so generously with fresh mango! It was loaded with sweet fresh mango, so even the look of it was incredible!

Milk bingsu with soft fresh mango—there is simply no way that combination could taste bad!

Out of all the chapssaltteok contenders, my picks were the gold kiwi chapssaltteok and chestnut chapssaltteok!

Wow... the chestnut chapssaltteok was so delicious!! It had red bean paste inside, plus no fewer than two big chestnuts! The chestnuts were large enough to really stand out in every bite, but it wasn't overly sweet—just perfect. Number one among the desserts I've had lately... 💛

And I absolutely love kiwi. Wow... the gold kiwi chapssaltteok... 💚 It has a whole gold kiwi inside. Biting into it, the sweet kiwi juice together with the red bean paste was just fantastic!
A café for a relaxed break on a Sunchang drive
If you want to take a drive not too far from Gwangju and unwind at a pretty café, I recommend Hwayangyeonhwa in Sunchang! If you're planning a Sunchang trip or a drive near Gwangju, be sure to stop by!! And especially, you have to try the fresh mango bingsu and chapssaltteok!
Overall, it was quiet and tranquil—a place to take a relaxed break rather than deal with a crowded café. I was so satisfied with the hanok atmosphere, the pretty bamboo photo spot, fresh mango bingsu, and delicious chapssaltteok. Hwayangyeonhwa is definitely a café I'd want to visit again whenever I come to Sunchang.
