If you can't decide at Munhwa Bakery, the writer's top pick is the peanut bread, more nutty than greasy.

A bakery line in Jongno 3-ga, and it turned out to be Munhwa Bakery

While walking near Jongno 3-ga, I noticed one spot with a really long line. What on earth is this place that so many people are waiting?! Curious, I went closer, and huh...? I've seen this place before...? 👀 Turns out it was Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵), which I visited last year and loved, hahaha

Last time I enjoyed the peanut bread so much that I told myself I'd come back, and now we meet again by chance 🤣 I was craving bread anyway, so I happily joined the line. This time I brought home 3 kinds: one I loved before and others I was curious about! So here's my second-visit review of Munhwa Bakery in Jongno 3-ga 🍞

Munhwa Bakery location and opening hours

Munhwa Bakery is a bakery at 65 Donhwamun-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 1st floor, near Jongno 3-ga Station. It's open daily 11:00–20:00, and parking isn't available.

It's also a nice stop while wandering around Ikseon-dong or Jongno. The first time, I also stumbled in while exploring Jongno, and this time it was another unplanned visit, so I guess Munhwa Bakery and I are meant to be..! 👏

Munhwa Bakery's line and hanok-style exterior

I walked the Jongno 3-ga alleys, saw people lined up, and went over to see what was going on! I knew it was a popular bakery from last time, but I really didn't expect to end up waiting in line this time 🙊 With so many people waiting, I wondered what bread could be so good that people queue for it. Having tried it once already, I was desperately craving the peanut bread, hahaha

Munhwa Bakery has a hanok-style (traditional Korean house) exterior that suits the Jongno vibe. There are so many pretty, flashy bakeries these days, but this place has an old-fashioned atmosphere that feels like a different kind of charm.

Munhwa Bakery is smaller than you might expect. It's less a big bakery café for lounging with coffee and bread, and more a place to pick out bread and take it to go.

Looking over the displayed breads brought back memories of my last visit. Back then I bought peanut bread, coffee bread and walnut bread, and I remember enjoying all three. The peanut bread was my top pick, so it went straight into my basket without a second thought! I also decided to try the garlic bread I missed last time.

Sample area by the register at Munhwa Bakery

There were almost no samples left when I went, but Munhwa Bakery sets out samples by the register, so keep that in mind before you buy!

How much do 3 breads cost at Munhwa Bakery?

₩16,400 of Munhwa Bakery garlic bread, coffee bread and peanut bread

This time I bought 3 breads at Munhwa Bakery, garlic bread, coffee bread and peanut bread, for ₩16,400 in total. It might feel a bit steep for a casual purchase, but considering bakery prices these days I didn't think it was very expensive, and above all the breads are big, so the price felt reasonable..! I remembered them being delicious, so I brought them home with high hopes.

  • Garlic bread ₩6,800
  • Coffee bread ₩5,800
  • Peanut bread ₩3,800

Garlic bread ₩6,800: moist and loaded with sauce

Munhwa Bakery garlic bread full of garlic sauce

The new item I tried at Munhwa Bakery this time was the garlic bread (₩6,800)! The friend who came with me last time had bought it, and I was busy picking other breads then, so I didn't get to try it. This time I really wanted to. Personally, I find it hard to walk past garlic bread at any bakery, so I picked it naturally :)

The inside is packed with garlic sauce, so it's moist and sweet with flavor in every bite. When I buy garlic bread elsewhere, there often isn't as much sauce as I'd hoped, which is disappointing, but Munhwa Bakery's garlic bread is the real deal, everyone..! 👀👏

Coffee bread ₩5,800: coffee-scented powder and soft cream

Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread (₩5,800) was so big that I cut it into roughly quarters(?) and put a piece on a plate. I'd bought it last time too and remembered enjoying it, so I picked it again.

You can smell coffee in the powder dusted on the outside, and inside there's soft cream, so the coffee flavor and cream go nicely together. If you like coffee, it's worth a look 💚

Peanut bread ₩3,800: the pick if you can't decide

Finally, the one I was most looking forward to: Munhwa Bakery's peanut bread (₩3,800)!! Honestly, it was the first thing I thought of when I decided to revisit. I loved it so much last time that I regretted buying only one..!

It's filled with peanut cream, so the nutty aroma is rich. Breads with lots of cream can get greasy or tiresome, but this one is far more nutty than heavy, so I could enjoy it to the very end! Personally, if you can't decide what to get at Munhwa Bakery, I'd recommend the peanut bread 🥜

Is Munhwa Bakery worth waiting in line for?

Overall verdict photo from the Munhwa Bakery revisit in Jongno 3-ga

There may be a line at Munhwa Bakery, but since customers are mostly takeout, it shrinks quickly, so it's worth the wait. It was an unexpected revisit, but it felt like running into a dear old friend. The prices are reasonable and the bread is really good, so once you taste it you'll understand why it's known as one of Seoul's top 3 bakeries!

I also heard that Munhwa Bakery donates bread that goes unsold after the day's baking to social welfare facilities such as those for children who miss meals, elderly people living alone, and free meal kitchens. You get to enjoy tasty bread and take part in a warm act of sharing, which made me feel even better, and I hope a kind bakery like this stays loved for a long, long time 💚🤍

If you're heading to Jongno 3-ga or Ikseon-dong, I think it's worth stopping by Munhwa Bakery at least once!
