In short

Stack Bakery is a croissant and puff-pastry bakery café in Jayang-dong, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, between Konkuk Univ. Station and Jayang Station, made famous by a French YouTuber's Shorts. A couple took six Stack Bakery pastries home (plain croissant, hazelnut kouign-amann, pain au chocolat, egg flan, Johnsonville sausage pastry and almond pain suisse), each roughly ₩4,000-6,000, and ranked them. Verdict: the egg flan is the sleeper value pick, and Stack Bakery is a must for croissant and puff-pastry lovers.

Why did Stack Bakery get so famous?

Stack Bakery is a croissant specialty bakery in Jayang-dong near Konkuk Univ., and it blew up thanks to a YouTube Short in which a French guy says there's a croissant here better than back home. When that Short kept popping up on my feed I was like, what is this?, and then it turned out to be near my workplace. It's Stack Bakery! Apparently it's hugely famous among croissant fans. My wife loves croissants too, so I went right away.

Stack Bakery exterior and 1st/2nd-floor interior

You'll spot Stack Bakery as soon as you step one block in from the main alley. It's one of the best-known bakeries around Konkuk Univ.

There's a cute croissant model and outdoor tables, but if you sit out there in summer you'll drown in the heat, so save it for autumn~

Right at the entrance you can see the YouTube Short I watched, haha. Thanks to that guy, Stack Bakery got super famous,, Go up the passage and you reach the 2nd-floor café seats, and on the 1st floor

Is the 2nd-floor seating good for eating in?

The 2nd-floor seats at Stack Bakery have floor-to-ceiling windows, so it feels nice and open! There aren't a huge number of seats, but it isn't short on them either. More than half the customers seemed to be takeout, but if you're looking for a bakery café near Konkuk Univ., this place is a good option too!

Stack Bakery pastry lineup and prices

Apart from the salt bread types, everything at Stack Bakery is made with puff-pastry dough, and prices run about ₩4,000-6,000. I heard the bread sells out if you go late, so I went fairly early and every item was available. I usually buy things to suit my wife's taste, so I only picked what she likes, haha.

  • Plain croissant
  • Hazelnut kouign-amann
  • Pain au chocolat
  • Egg flan
  • Johnsonville sausage pastry
  • Almond pain suisse

So I ordered these to go!!

If you write a Naver review, they give you a financier, whoa! Buy 4 or more pastries and box packaging is free too! There's a stamp coupon as well, so I happily got one stamp, haha.

Stack Bakery drinks and set menus

Stack Bakery drink and set menu board

The drink menu at Stack Bakery isn't huge, but it has everything you'd need, and there are also meal items and set menus that aren't in the display case. If you're eating in, unlike me with my takeout, the set menus look like a good deal!

Stack Bakery's simply designed takeout box

They packed everything with care. The box is simple but pretty.

Plain croissant: the signature item with layers intact

The plain croissant, Stack Bakery's signature, is about the size of an adult's palm. The moment I opened the wrapper, the butter smell was insane, haha. I warmed it briefly in the air fryer and ate it with my wife, and the air pockets between the layers were all beautifully preserved, so it was crispy, nutty and so good.

Hazelnut kouign-amann: crunchy like a kkrungji

Next is the kouign-amann (caramelized butter pastry), which got the most raves of all. Maybe because I picked hazelnut, but it had a faint coffee aroma. I didn't even heat it in the air fryer and it was this crunchy, what is going on,, The outside is coated in a very thin layer of syrup, so it felt a bit like eating kkrungji (crunchy baked-dough snack)?? The texture goes beyond crispy into a dry, almost fried crunch. There isn't much syrup, so it was moderately sweet with a strong butter flavor, and I enjoyed this one too. At first my wife peeled off the outer part and said, "I don't eat this," but when she ate it together with the filling inside she said it was good, haha.

Johnsonville pastry: a whole sausage inside

I bought the Johnsonville pastry as a breakfast substitute for my wife, and it has a real Johnsonville sausage inside, whole! She's the type who always buys a sausage bread wherever we go, so I picked it. There's no separate sauce inside, but Johnsonville itself is so salty that the seasoning was just right, and she said she finished a whole meal with it alongside milk. (I didn't try it, so I don't know the taste,,)

Pain au chocolat: chocolate that hits in the aftertaste

The pain au chocolat had a quiet, subtle presence. It's basically a croissant with a little chocolate added? There wasn't a huge difference from the plain croissant, but the bittersweet chocolate that hits in the aftertaste was charming. A bit classic?

Almond pain suisse: the heaviest, and the owner's top pick

Next is the almond pain suisse. Maybe because it also has a bit of syrup?, it was super crunchy, and it was the heaviest in weight. The flavor was just as dense and heavy. I think it's good for people who like these hefty ones. If you like sweet and nutty things, I strongly recommend it, and personally this was my favorite. (If you're usually crazy about Almond Bonbon ice cream, you'll probably like it, hahahaha, that's me)

Egg flan: the sleeper I bought with no expectations

Last is the egg flan, which I bought without expecting much. It had the fewest reviews, but this one is a sleeper. It's big, and the filling really tastes of egg without being eggy-smelly, and the combo with pastry dough was already proven by egg tarts,, so, well,, haha.

Egg filling of the Stack Bakery egg flan

Maybe because they packed the filling with premium vanilla beans, the flavor itself feels a bit upscale. Personally I think the egg flan is a really good choice for the price.

Stack Bakery taste ranking by our couple's taste

Going by the owner's and my wife's tastes, here's how I'd rank the Stack Bakery pastries!

  • 1st: Johnsonville pastry (wife's top pick)
  • 2nd: Egg flan
  • 3rd: Almond pain suisse (owner's top pick)
  • 4th: Pain au chocolat
  • 5th: Plain croissant = kouign-amann

It's not that the croissant and kouign-amann taste bad, it's just that the ones ahead of them were so strong, haha.

Who should visit Stack Bakery?

  • Recommended if you're looking for a Jayang-dong bakery or a café near Geondae Station
  • If you like croissants and puff-pastry bakes, go to Stack Bakery
  • The egg flan is big and tastes great, recommended (considering egg tart prices these days, it's a real bargain)
  • The set menus are also good for brunch or lunch
