Konkuk Univ. dessert café with whole-mango milk bingsu: Café Ohkam

In short

Café Ohkam is a dessert café known for mango bingsu (Korean shaved ice), on a back street near Konkuk Univ. Station in Gwangjin, Seoul. On a Sunday afternoon the writer and her husband joined the phone-call waiting list, then shared the 24,000-won fresh mango bingsu: one whole fresh mango over a milk-ice base, with condensed milk at the bottom. Café Ohkam's fresh mango bingsu is pricey, but the quality makes the price feel justified once you've eaten it.

Summer just means you have to eat bingsu (Korean shaved ice), right?! I'm a total mango lover, so I came all the way from Seongsu over to Konkuk Univ. for mango bingsu, haha (thank you to my husband for coming along 💗). The place I went is Café Ohkam (카페 오캄) in Gwangjin-gu. I'd heard it's famous for its mango bingsu, so I paid a visit 🥭✨

Where is Café Ohkam near Konkuk Univ. Station?

Café Ohkam is in a back-street kind of area close to Konkuk Univ. Station. It was my first time wandering into this part of town, haha.

The building has two floors, and the clouds reflected in the second-floor windows were so, so pretty 🩵 I wonder if the interior was designed with that in mind!! It's a cloud-spotting hotspot ☁️🩵

How does the weekend wait at Café Ohkam work?

When I visited on a Sunday afternoon there was a wait 🥲 You write down a number and leave your contact details, and they phone you when it's your turn! So you can stroll around the neighborhood and head back when the call comes. It's a more convenient system than I expected 😊

I got the call in about 3 minutes while I was walking away, haha, so I turned right back around. Some waiting chairs in front of the shop would be nice..! If you want to avoid the wait, I recommend a weekday visit!

The second floor has a really cozy, lovely atmosphere! ✨ I'd read beforehand that there's a resident cat, but I didn't get to meet it on the weekend, sob. If you're going to see the cat, a weekday visit is probably better! 🐈

There's a rooftop too, but I heard it isn't open in the summer heat. Still, I bet eating dessert up there in autumn has a fantastic mood 🍂

At Café Ohkam, my pick was obviously the mango bingsu! I came for this, so I barely looked at the menu, haha (looking now, there's plenty of other stuff, hehe). The mango bingsu costs ₩24,000. I hesitated a little when I heard the price, but the moment it arrived I got it 😄

They also have tiramisu, mango sando (sandwich) and mango cake!🥭🥭🥭

Mangoes~~~🥭💛💛💛 I'd love to take a whole box home, haha

How does Café Ohkam's 24,000-won fresh mango bingsu taste?

Café Ohkam fresh mango bingsu topped with half a whole mango

There's a whole mango in Café Ohkam's fresh mango bingsu! Half sits on top intact, which really amps up the look, and the other half is sliced and hidden in generous amounts under the shaved ice 💛

As a mango lover, I can say the mango flavor was truly good. It wasn't just sweet: the aroma was rich, and the fresh mango made it even tastier 🥭 I actually saw them prepping fresh mangoes in the café nonstop, and you can taste that care ✨

The spoon is cute too~~ haha

How to eat the whole-mango bingsu

They told me to move the mango onto the plate underneath and eat it together with the bingsu~ There's mango syrup drizzled on top that can drip a bit, so be sure to grab napkins!

Milk-ice base with condensed milk at the bottom

Café Ohkam's mango bingsu has a milk-ice base, so compared with plain ice bingsu it's much softer and richer, and you naturally taste the creamy milk with every spoonful 😊

And there's condensed milk spread underneath. When you start from the top it's not very sweet, so you might think it's less sweet than expected, but as you dig down the condensed milk mixes in and it gets sweeter and sweeter 💛🥭

Is Café Ohkam's mango bingsu worth 24,000 won?

Generous fresh mango, a milk-ice base and condensed milk: every single component was really delicious 🥭💛 At ₩24,000 you might hesitate a little, but after eating it the quality more than convinces you!

You need to be ready for a weekend wait, but since they call you, waiting wasn't a big hassle 😊 This autumn I definitely want to try the rooftop too! Next time I plan to take on their other desserts ✨
