Chicken platter twice in a day at a Hongdae halal spot: Halal Steaks

In short

Halal Steaks is a halal food restaurant on Yanghwa-ro 16-gil near Hongik University Station in Mapo, Seoul. On this visit two chicken platters were ordered to go, one eaten for lunch and the other for dinner, and the same dish did not get old even twice in one day. For a filling meal in Hongdae that tastes like something different, a chicken platter to go from Halal Steaks is worth ordering.

Why order two chicken platters to go from Halal Steaks in Hongdae?

I was looking for a good meal in Hongdae and ended up back at Halal Steaks. I generally love eating halal food, and their chicken platter is so good I've come back again.

This time I went ahead and packed two chicken platters to go — one for lunch and one to eat later for dinner. Turned out to be a really good call!!

I ate one at lunch and one at dinner, and I enjoyed both meals so much. Eating the same dish twice in the same day and not getting sick of it at all — even the second one at dinner still tasted just as good.

Lunch: how much food is in one Halal Steaks chicken platter?

For lunch I dug right into the platter I'd packed. One platter is a good enough portion for a full meal on its own, so I didn't need anything else on the side — it was filling all by itself.

The chicken in particular was really good. Tender but with a distinct spice flavor to it — definitely a different kind of appeal from the chicken I usually eat.

Eating the rice and chicken together with the sauce mixed in, all these flavors came together and I kept going back for more. The red sauce makes it a bit spicy, but in a way that never gets overwhelming — it just keeps sliding down easy.

At first I was just thinking "let's have a nice lunch," but it turned out so much tastier than expected that I was really satisfied.

I wish I could make this at home but I probably can't, right? Seriously can't get sick of it..

Dinner: does the same chicken platter get old the second time?

Then for dinner I opened up the second chicken platter I'd packed. Usually if you eat the same dish twice in one day, no matter how good it is, you might get a little tired of it by dinnertime — but that wasn't the case at all this time.

If lunch was eaten hungrily and fast, dinner was more relaxed, taking my time pairing the chicken, rice, and sauce bite by bite — and it was just as good.

Best of all, having one chicken platter each for lunch and dinner made for just the right portion for a full meal each time. It's the kind of food you could almost give to a kid, so I thought I might do that next time. Kind of healthy, in a way..? As long as you skip the sauce!

Is Halal Steaks a good place to try halal food for the first time?

Instead of eating both at once, I had each one as its own proper meal, which actually felt like I was eating two real meals rather than snacking. Hongdae has so many different restaurants that it's always fun hunting for something new, and Halal Steaks let me enjoy flavors a bit different from what I usually eat.

Halal food might sound unfamiliar at first, but since it's a platter of chicken and rice together, it felt more approachable than expected. Add in the distinct spices and sauce, and the flavor was noticeably different from a regular chicken rice bowl.

Halal Steaks in Hongdae, a halal meal that travels well

I ate this as takeout, and it was also nice and easy to enjoy at home. Works well if you're running errands in Hongdae and want to pack it home, or if you're nearby and looking for a good lunch or dinner.

Next time I want to try their other menu items besides the chicken platter, one by one. The sandwich definitely looks good too. If you're looking for something easy and filling, I'd recommend the sandwich here. Honestly the platter itself is already super easy and clean to eat too!

If I'm back in Hongdae and suddenly think of the Halal Steaks chicken platter, I'll probably pack another one to go. Halal food is love... 🤤 I want to try Halal Guys when I go to the US 🇺🇸😎🙏

If you're looking for a filling and different kind of meal in Hongdae, I really recommend Halal Steaks! This time I neatly covered both lunch and dinner with it, and I was really satisfied eating it. The owner was kind too.
