Aewol pork noodle restaurant with a weekday dinner wait: Handam Guksu

In short

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a pork noodle (gogi guksu) restaurant on Aewol-ro in Aewol-eup, Jeju. On a weekday evening Handam Guksu was full with a line waiting, and the order was a large bowl of bone-broth pork noodles, dombe naengsuyuk (chilled boiled pork served on a wooden board) and handmade pork tteokgalbi (grilled minced pork patties, 3 pcs), with rich broth, clean-tasting cold pork and juicy patties all hitting the mark. For a proper Jeju-style pork noodle meal in Aewol, Handam Guksu is worth the wait.

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch (한담국수 곽지애월점): a local favorite in Aewol and the textbook pork noodle

Main photo from a visit to Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch
Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, a pork noodle restaurant in Aewol

If one food is a must on any Jeju trip, it's pork noodles (gogi guksu). This time I visited Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, a spot locals in Aewol rave about.

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch on a weekday evening

It was a weekday evening, yet the restaurant was already packed and there was even a line outside. I couldn't help thinking, "This is a real local place." Seeing Jeju locals, not just tourists, keep walking in made me even more excited. Plenty of reviews also say it's loved steadily by residents and travelers alike.

Is there a wait at Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch on a weekday evening?

Even at weekday dinner time, almost every table filled up quickly and customers started waiting. Full on a weekday evening! That was the moment I felt how popular this local Aewol favorite is.

Aewol has plenty of famous restaurants, but few have a line on a weekday evening. Once mealtime hit, almost every table at Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch filled quickly, and people kept lining up to wait.

I was struck by how many Jeju families came, not just tourists, and I felt once again that locals find the good places first. If you want proper Jeju pork noodles in Aewol, it's well worth the wait.

What we ordered at Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch

We ordered three dishes this time.

  • Bone-broth pork noodles (large)
  • Dombe naengsuyuk (cold sliced boiled pork)
  • Handmade pork tteokgalbi (grilled minced-patty), 3 pcs

Noodles alone felt like not enough, so we ordered a range of dishes, and it turned out to be the best choice.

Bone-broth pork noodles (large): the classic rich broth

Large pork noodles in rich bone broth

As the signature dish of Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, the bone-broth pork noodles are the first thing I'd recommend. The long-simmered beef bone broth was deep and rich without being greasy. One spoonful and I immediately understood why so many people come here.

I got the large size, so there were plenty of noodles, topped generously with tender boiled Jeju pork, making it a properly filling meal. Deep, rich bone broth and soft Jeju pork, a perfect match!

Dombe naengsuyuk: Jeju-style boiled pork with a clean, light taste

Dombe pork (sliced boiled pork served on a cutting board) is one of the foods you have to eat when you come to Jeju.

Plate of chewy dombe naengsuyuk

The dombe naengsuyuk here is chilled for an even chewier texture, and I was impressed by how clean it tasted, with no gamey smell. It felt barely greasy and light, so it paired really well with the pork noodles. Jeju-style boiled pork with a chewy bite and a mild, light flavor.

Handmade pork tteokgalbi at Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch

The handmade pork tteokgalbi made in-house at Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch was really juicy. Golden on the outside and moist inside, it got more porky the more I chewed. The sweet-salty seasoning makes it easy for adults and kids alike.

Calling it a side dish doesn't do it justice, since I was quite satisfied. Juicy handmade tteokgalbi that everyone, young and old, will enjoy.

Why I recommend Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch as an Aewol pork noodle restaurant

Jeju has many pork noodle shops, but Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is the one that best earns the label of a local Aewol favorite. A full house and a line even on a weekday evening showed its popularity, and every dish satisfied: deep, rich broth in the bone-broth noodles, a clean light flavor in the dombe naengsuyuk, and plenty of juice in the handmade pork tteokgalbi.

If you're looking for a hearty meal on your Aewol trip, I can recommend it with confidence. If you want to experience proper Jeju pork noodles, do visit once. A perfect start to a Jeju and Aewol trip: I strongly recommend Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch.
